The current interest in reading the Gospels as narratives has reclaimed aspects of these texts that historical-critical approaches failed to respect. The richness of these newer readings can, however, disguise their limitations as literary-critical exercises. Developing Hans Frei's concern for theological reading, David Lee reworks the narratology of the Dutch literary theorist Mieke Bal to produce a theological narrative reading practice that formally respects the text as scripture while leaving open the possible meanings that readers may construct for themselves in the act of reading. Lee demonstrates his approach through readings of the Narrator and the characters Jesus and the Demons as aspects of a composite Lukan narrative Christology.
25 stories retold from Luke's Gospel, matched by 25 very sympathetic contemporary stories, covering related themes, about the Robinson family, parents Steve and Kate and their children Peter, Sarah and Jemma. By hearing one of Luke's stories and then a story about the Robinsons, children will: become familiar with some of the best stories from the Bible; realise that the Bible is not just about things that happened 2000 years ago to people living 3000 miles away, but that it also deals with issues that affect people today; learn that ordinary families have problems that they can often solve with understanding and patience; and begin to appreciate that the Bible can help young people today. The stories are primarily intended for school use but could also be used as talks in the context of junior church. A brief prayer is included for use at school assemblies.
Luke Kelly (1940-1984) was an Irish singer and folk musician from Dublin most famous as a member of the band The Dubliners. Kelly was one of the best-known figures of the Irish folk music movement of the 1960s and 1970s. A Dubliner from the north inner city. He emigrated to Britain in 1958. There he first became involved in the growing international folk music scene in which Ewan MacColl was a central figure. In 1962 Luke Kelly returned to Dublin and quickly became a central figure in the city's burgeoning folk music community. He formed a folk group with Drew, McKenna, Ciaran Bourke and John Sheahan, which he named The Dubliners. In 1965, Kelly married the actress Deirdre O'Connell, one of the founders of the Focus Theatre. In the mid-1960s, Luke moved to England and on returning, he rejoined the Dubliners. Luke remained a politically engaged musician, and many of the songs he recorded dealt with social issues, the arms race and war, workers' rights and Irish nationalism. Luke Kelly was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 1980, and died in 1984. He remains a Dublin icon and his music is widely regarded as one of the city's cultural treasures. The Ballybough Bridge in the north inner city of Dublin has been renamed the The Luke Kelly Bridge.

Idiosyncratic looks at the stereotype of the red-blooded American man In his second photobook, American photographer Luke Smalley revisits the themes from his 2002 monograph Gymnasium. After receiving a degree in sports medicine from Pepperdine University and then working as both a model and personal trainer, Smalley became fascinated with the archetype of the athletic American male, and sought to explore its more playful side. His compositions were inspired by early 20th-century fitness manuals and high school yearbooks. In Exercise at Home, now reissued after being out of print since 2007, Smalley returns to his native Pennsylvania to consider the small-town interiors and landscapes that are the settings for his portraits of young athletes. Color photographs, inspired by a more innocent era, combine whimsy with the inexplicable. Smalley hires a local seamstress to construct a colossal medicine ball; he binds two boys together with a "harness" and leaves them in an empty room for a psychological game of tug-of-war, while somewhere nearby two others lead donkeys around the floor of a basketball court in a high school gym. Scale, time and content are altered to create the world Smalley inhabits. The lush colors of this new vision belie the viewer’s sense of dislocation. Luke Smalley (1955–2009) had his first photobook discovered in a hotel lobby by Dior Men’s fashion designer and artistic director Kim Jones. Smalley shot Jones’ first fashion line and went on to have a storied career in fashion photography. His images have appeared in the New York Times style section, Dazed and V, among others.
