The Correspondence Between Franz Marc and Rev. Otto Schlier 1894-1900. A Study to the Protestant Background of the Artist]Franz Marc is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. From research we know that as a young man this famous painter and printmaker wanted to become a priest. The study examines the origins of this wish - the Christian and religious influences of Franz Marc's youth - in great detail from a theological point of view. The analysis of the letters Marc and his mentor Otto Schlier, a protestant priest, exchanged between 1894 and 1900, which have now been fully edited for the first time, shows, among other things, that Franz Marc grew up in an environment coined by the ideas of liberal theology and cultural Protestantism.Against this background, we need to find new ways of interpreting the artist's writings, paintings and drawings, and especially the religious imagery used therein.
Memoir of the Life of Sir Marc Isambard Brunel

Memoir of the Life of Sir Marc Isambard Brunel

Richard Beamish

Cambridge University Press
2013
pokkari
Abandoning a military career, Richard Beamish (1798–1873) decided to become a civil engineer. His suitability as a biographer of Sir Marc Isambard Brunel (1769–1849) stems from the period he spent working closely with the Brunels on the Thames Tunnel. Published in 1862, this memoir recounts the elder Brunel's eventful life and work, including his youth in France, his flight to America in the aftermath of the French Revolution, his lesser-known ventures in the early nineteenth century, and the tunnelling project which would consume much of the second half of his life. An informed portrait of a figure who has since been outshone by his more famous son, this book includes first-hand accounts of the ill-fated early attempt to build the Thames Tunnel, which was abandoned in 1828 due to flooding and lack of funds, and of Brunel's vindication upon its eventual completion in 1843.

Despatches of Michele Suriano and Marc' Antonio Barbaro

Edited by the retired politician and archaeologist Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817–94), this 1891 publication reproduces the despatches of Michele Suriano and Marcantonio Barbaro, Venetian ambassadors to France in 1560–1 and 1561–4 respectively. Addressed to the doge of Venice, the documents provide valuable accounts of one of the most fascinating periods of French history, covering the death of Francis II, the accession of Charles IX, the regency of Catherine de' Medici, and the negotiations for the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots. The documents appear in their original Italian and in English translation. Evident in Suriano's and Barbaro's letters is the underlying tension between French Catholics and Protestant Huguenots, which would culminate in the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. The book was produced for the Huguenot Society of London, and Layard, the Society's first president, was himself of Huguenot descent.
