A love story with real bite . . . Following an incident that involved accidentally almost killing her best friend, 18-year-old Gabrielle is sent to stay with her grandmother in a Gothic castle in Whitby for the summer. There, Gabrielle befriends nice-guy Ethan, the handsome young builder renovating the castle. She has no choice but to ignore the attraction between them because Gabby has a secret: she has recently discovered that she's a soucouyant - a bloodthirsty vampire with fire powers from Caribbean lore. As Gabrielle struggles to control her thirst for blood, she joins a secret support group with other young vampires. Then she meets rebellious, self-loathing Alok, whose adoptive father leads a group of local vampire hunters. And Alok has a deadly secret of his own. Tensions between vampires and hunters rise as vicious attacks take the small seaside town by storm, and Gabrielle finds herself caught in a dangerous love triangle. As worlds collide and secrets unravel, she must face the disastrous consequences of her actions . . . Darker than Twilight and sharper than Euphoria, this steamy vampire romantasy will have readers thirsting for more.
The POW Camp at Fort McClellan, Alabama, was one of hundreds of American containment centers built to hold the hundreds of thousands of German prisoners captured during World War II. The camp's well-maintained and humane facilities gained it a reputation as a "model camp." Military officials praised its elimination of major operational problems. International inspectors commended it, calling it one of the best camps in the country. Prisoners accepted and even enjoyed their time there. Drawing on official documents and recollections of prisoners, soldiers and civilians, this book provides a personal and detailed history of a widely praised and admired place of internment.

Diagnosis: Asperger's Syndrome. Symptoms often only apparent when under stress. Witnessing a murder qualifies as stress.Russ Dante-math teacher, older brother, hobby artist-has a passion for sunsets and finds comfort in his ritual of capturing the striking colors in his sketchbook with oil pastels. That changes one August evening on a secluded park hilltop when-instead of the sunset he came to sketch-he sees a murder. Before the smoky-blue of twilight falls, Russ is running for his life. The next day, the body is missing. The police pressure Russ for facial descriptions he cannot provide, his sister seems angry with him, but he doesn't know why, and he is certain he's being followed. Chaos and unpredictability pile up on Russ until sound hurts, lights are too bright, and people's voices slur, their words melding into undecipherable nonsense. His social skills dissolve...and suddenly, he is the number one suspect. After narrowly surviving an attempt on his own life, Russ realizes that the only way to protect himself and those he cares about is to find the killer. Fast. His Aspie skills of intelligence and attention to detail are helpful, but can he overcome his social challenges and solve the murder before it's too late? There's a lot of nonfiction written about Asperger Syndrome, but very little fiction. In Asperger Sunset, Russ has to deal with the twin challenges of solving a murder and learning more about Asperger's Syndrome, the diagnosis that finally explains the quirks and challenges he's lived with all of his life. While Russ provides the Aspie take on the world, his sister, Misty, reflects the neurotypical. Readers are able to experience both worlds, and, ideally, will come away with a better idea of how each side thinks.

An original and groundbreaking book that examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer's Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In this moving, dazzlingly creative book, Dr. Shay examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer's Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. A classic of war literature that has as much relevance as ever in the wake of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is a "transcendent literary adventure" (The New York Times) and "clearly one of the most original and most important scholarly works to have emerged from the Vietnam War" (Tim O'Brien, author of The Things They Carried).

JonBenet was reported missing Dec. 26, 1996, in a frantic 5:52 a.m. 911 call in which Patsy Ramsey told Boulder police she'd found a ransom note demanding the head-scratching figure of $118,000 for her daughter's safe return. Instead of paying a ransom and getting their daughter returned, JonBen t's lifeless body was discovered early that afternoon in a little-used room of the family's cellar by her father and a family friend. JonBenet was discovered with tape across her mouth, a ligature buried deep in the skin of her neck through use of a garrote fashioned from cord and a broken paintbrush taken from her mother's art supplies. Some of the same cord was loosely bound around her right wrist. Not noticed until the autopsy was that she'd also suffered a linear fracture to the right side of her skull, likely the result of a single blow from a blunt object. And some believe that she was sexually abused. So many interpretations have been advanced over time of the forensic evidence in this case, made only worst by a highly contaminated crime scene. It quickly came to resemble a criminalist's darkest nightmare, each piece of the puzzle easily lending itself to the perspective of the person reviewing it. We will look beyond the facts of the crime as they became known in the days immediately following the discovery of her murder, we will also examine the behavior of JonBen t's parents, viewed as unusual by police and by the public at large.
