Julien trouve une place de pr cepteur dans la maison du maire, Monsieur de R nal, et noue une relation interdite avec son pouse. Chass lorsque cette idylle est d couverte, il rentre au s minaire de Besan on. Avant peu, il monte Paris et devient le secr taire du Marquis de la Mole, dont il s duira la fille Mathilde. Jusqu'au bout, Julien Sorel verra son ambition contrecarr e par ses sentiments, qui le conduiront sa perte.
Les Souvenirs d' gotisme sont une oeuvre autobiographique de Stendhal. Ils ont t r dig s en 1832, lors du s jour de leur auteur Civitavecchia. Stendhal y raconte minutieusement sa vie Paris apr s la chute de Napol on, de 1821 1830. Le r cit est rest inachev et n'a t publi qu'en 1892 par Casimir Stryienski. Le titre signifie que Stendhal veut explorer sa propre personne et tenter de se conna tre lui-m me. L' gotisme n'est donc pas synonyme d' go sme - l' go sme en constitue plut t un danger. Extrait: Je me logeais Paris, rue de Richelieu, dans un H tel de Bruxelles, n 47, tenu par un M. Petit, ancien valet de chambre de l'un des MM. de Damas. La politesse, la gr ce, l' -propos de ce M. Petit, son absence de tout sentiment, son horreur pour tout mouvement de l' me qui avait de la profondeur, son souvenir vif pour des jouissances de vanit qui avaient trente ans de date, son honneur parfait en mati re d'argent, en faisaient mes yeux le mod le parfait de l'ancien Fran ais. Je lui confiai bien vite les 3000 francs qui me restaient; il m'en remit malgr moi un bout de re u que je me h tai de perdre, ce qui le contraria beaucoup lorsque, quelques mois apr s ou quelques semaines, je repris mon argent pour aller en Angleterre o me poussa le mortel d go t que j' prouvais Paris...
L'action du roman commence Milan en 1796, par les confidences d'un lieutenant fran ais d nomm Robert, qui conte l'arriv e au duch de Milan des arm es de la R volution men e par le jeune Napol on Bonaparte lors de la campagne d'Italie. Ces arm es r veillent, dans un peuple lombard anesth si par la tutelle autrichienne, un vieux fond h ro que, et sont accueillies avec une gaiet folle par les Milanais dans leur majorit . La R publique transpadane fut proclam e la m me ann e et remplac e l'ann e suivante par la R publique cisalpine.
