This collection of short, action-filled stories of the Old West’s most egregiously badly behaved female outlaws, gamblers, soiled doves, and other wicked women by award-winning Western history author Chris Enss offers a glimpse into Western Women’s experience that's less sunbonnets and more six-shooters. During the late nineteenth century, while men were settling the new frontier and rushing off to the latest boom towns, women of easy virtue found wicked lives west of the Mississippi when they followed fortune hunters seeking gold and land in an unsettled territory. Prostitutes and female gamblers hoped to capitalize on the vices of the intrepid pioneers. Pulling together stories of ladies caught in the acts of mayhem, distraction, murder, and highway robbery, it will include famous names like Belle Starr and Big Nose Kate, as well as lesser known characters.

From sports to politics, food to finance, aviation to engineering, to bitter disputes over simple boundaries themselves, New England’s feuds have peppered the region’s life for centuries. They’ve been raw and rowdy, sometimes high minded and humorous, and in a place renowned for its deep sense of history, often long-running and legendary. There are even some that will undoubtedly outlast the region’s ancient low stone walls. Ted Reinstein, a native New Englander and local writer, offers us fascinating stories, some known, others not so much, from the history of New England in this fun, accessible book. Bringing to life many of the fights, spats, and arguments that have, in many ways, shaped the area itself, Reinstein demonstrates what it really means to be Wicked Pissed.

Incredible Stories of the Prophets, Vagabonds, Fortune-Tellers, Hermits, Lords, and Poets Who Shaped New England New England has been a lot of things—an economic hub, a cultural center, a sports mecca—but it is also home to many of the strangest individuals in America. Wicked Weird & Wily Yankees explores and celebrates the eccentric personalities who have left their mark in a way no other book has before. Some folks are known, others not so much, but the motley cast of characters that emerges from these pages represents a fascinating cross-section of New England’s most peculiar denizens. Look inside to find: ·Tales of the Leather Man and the Old Darned Man, who both spent years crisscrossing the highways and byways of the northeast, their origins and motivation to remain forever unknown. ·The magnificent homes of William Gillette and Madame Sherri, famed socialites who constructed enormous castles in the New England countryside. ·William Sheldon’s apocalyptic prophecies and wild claims including that the American Revolution had hastened the end of the world and that he could—through his mastery of the “od-force”—prevent cholera across the eastern United States. ·The mysterious fortune-teller Moll Pitcher whose predictions, some say, were sought by European royalty and whose fame made her the subject of poems, plays, and novels long after her death. Stretching back to the colonial era and covering the development and evolution of New England society through the beginning of the twenty-first century, this book captures the rebel spirit, prickly demeanors, and wily attitudes that have made the region the hotbed for oddity it is today. *All Royalties Donated to the Education and Youth Programs at the Connecticut River Museum*

It’s no surprise that the historic Massachusetts seaport’s history is checkered with violence and heinous crimes. Originally called Naumkeag, Salem means “peace.” However, as its historical legacy dictates, the city was anything but peaceful during the late seventeenth century. Did the reputed Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo, strike in Salem? Evidence supports the possibility of a copy-cat murder. From the recently pinpointed gallows where innocents were hanged for witchcraft to the murder house on Essex Street where Capt. Joseph White was bludgeoned to death and then stabbed thirteen times in the heart, Sam Baltrusis explores the ghost lore and the people behind the tragic events that turned the “Witch City” into a hot spot that has become synonymous with witches, rakes, and rogues.

For the first time in nearly a decade, New York Times bestselling Sisters of Suspense Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush return to Siren Song, an isolated island tucked between the mountains and the sea off the wild Oregon coast. Some people call it The Colony. Others whisper it's a cult. For a group of women with extraordinary gifts, it's both home and refuge. Until evil returns to burn it all down... The note pinned to the dead body found on the remote beach has no name, just Ravinia Rutledge's phone number and the words "Next of Kin." Ravinia insists she doesn't recognize the man on the mortuary slab, but she suspects Detective Nev Rhodes doesn't believe her. He can tell that she's one of them--the Siren Song women. Five years after moving away from The Colony, Ravinia has carved out a life as a private investigator whose specialty is helping others locate their missing loved ones. Yet sometimes, it's better if the missing are never found. "Good Time Charlie" is the name given to a monster from her past, a man whom she and her sisters hoped was gone forever. But the dead man on the beach is a sign that Charlie has merely been waiting, preparing to fulfill his mission to rid the world of the Siren Song women--and anyone else who gets in his way. Rhodes has his own reasons for being fascinated with The Colony and its surroundings--a place marked by unexplained deaths and tragedies. Rhodes plays by the rules, but there are forces at work here that defy notions of law and order. And despite Ravinia's reluctance to team up with Nev, it's the only way to stop an adversary determined to see that each and every member of The Colony will die at his hands . . . "The action picks up and builds to a fiery conclusion." -Publishers Weekly

There are many tried and true traditions and memories attached to the legacy of the final year of middle school... football games, concerts, track meets, school dances, love poems, crushes, road trips, pizza parties, graduation projects, field day, a fourteen-foot wall, and of course, Ms. Salt's infamous, annual, eighth grade, bridge build contest. Thus, when Persephone Smith and her classmates return to the halls of Diversity Middle School for one more year, they anticipate that eighth grade will be the year they finally rule the school. Only... not so fast. From a first-day schedule snafu to a last-minute scramble to graduate, they are continually reminded that, even with their prolific magical abilities, eighth grade is not the year-long celebration they expect it to be. Instead, it is pure drama. Join twelve-year-old Persephone and her family, friends, and crushes as they take on the emotional rollercoaster of watching loved ones battling cancer, the joys and anguishes of puppy love, the push and pull of right and wrong, the extremes of friendship, and the daily life and death overreactions that make eighth grade a particularly "wicked dramatic" time of life."Wicked Dramatic" is the fourth book in a coming-of-age, realistic, paranormal, fantasy series by author Lauren Courcelle.

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Wicked Words Quarterly, this is where I get the privilege of publishing stories I (and hopefully, you) want to read. Those stories that make you think and sometimes really surprise you. As a long-time science fiction, fantasy and horror fan I used to run a photocopied 'zine back in early 80s full of angst-ridden elf lords, slinkily clad star maidens and slime-encrusted demons. This 'zine, thankfully, didn't have a distribution past my D&D friends who usually used the blank spaces for making in-game notes. I have always held a dream of publishing tightly written words and since my own are anything but, I again thought I would live vicariously through the skills of others by setting up this Quarterly magazine. This process was much harder than I thought it would be, not the technical side, but having to reject stories. So many were sent of such high quality that it became really difficult to choose. So it came down to which stories did I enjoy reading most and that required reading most several times. I want to thank everyone who generously submitted their work to Wicked Words Quarterly and hope those who were unsuccessful this time keep trying as every story was great.
