Applied Psychometrics Using SPSS and AMOS
The goal of the book is to provide readers with the tools necessary for assessing the psychometric qualities of educational and psychological measures as well as surveys and questionnaires. Each chapter will cover an issue pertinent to psychometric and measurement practice, with an emphasis on application. Topics will be briefly discussed from a theoretical/technical perspective in order to provide the reader with the background necessary to correctly use and interpret the statistical analyses that will be presented subsequently. The anticipated audience for this book includes researchers, practitioners, and graduate students searching for a guide to perform common psychometric analyses on various assessments, as discussed in many psychometric texts. We envision that this text will (a) patiently wait on some office shelves begging to be handed to a student as a resource, (b) have a permanent home on desks where it continually rises to the top of the stacks for daily use of the applied researcher, (c) be happily carried in bags to and from work and class by the graduate student learning techniques, (d) be listed proudly as a reference text on syllabi, and finally (e) as an occasional drink coaster while deep thoughts are pondered about how to solve measurement problems. We hope that through such uses, particularly the latter, that we have provided some insight and assistance to the user in appropriately applying the techniques and concepts discussed.

The book will be designed primarily for graduate students (or advanced undergraduates) who are learning psychometrics, as well as professionals in the field who need a reference for use in their practice. We would assume that users have some basic knowledge of using SPSS to read data and conduct basic analyses (e.g., descriptive statistics, frequency distributions). In addition, the reader should be familiar with basic statistical concepts such as descriptive statistics (e.g., mean, median, variance, standard deviation), percentiles and the rudiments of hypothesis testing. They should also have a passing familiarity with issues in psychometrics such as reliability, validity and test/survey scoring. We will not assume any more than basic familiarity with these issues, and will devote a portion of each chapter (as well as the entire first chapter) to reviewing many of these basic ideas for those not familiar with them.We envision the book as being useful either as a primary text for a course on applied measurement where SPSS is the main platform for instruction, or as a supplement to a more theoretical text. We also anticipate that readers working in government agencies responsible for testing and measurement issues at the local, state and national levels, and private testing, survey and market research companies, as well as faculty members needing a practical resource for psychometric practice will serve as a market for the book. In short, the readership would include graduate students, faculty members, data analysts and psychometricians responsible for analysis of survey response data, as well as educational and psychological assessments. Readers will then be presented with examples illustrating a particular concept (e.g., reliability). These examples will include a discussion of the particular analysis, along with the SPSS code necessary to conduct them. The resulting output will then be discussed in detail, focusing on the interpretation of the results. Finally, examples of how these results might be written up will also be included in the text. It is hoped that this mixture of theory with examples of actual practice will serve the reader both as a pedagogical tool and as a reference work.To our knowledge, no book outlining psychometric practice using commonly available software such as SPSS currently exists. Given that many practitioners in academia, government and private industry use SPSS for statistical analyses of testing data, we believe that our book will fill an important niche in the market. It will contain very practical information regarding how to conduct a wide variety of psychometric analyses, along with tips on interpretation of results and the appropriate format for reporting these results. We believe that it will prove useful to individuals in educational measurement, psychometrics, and survey and market research. Our text will add to the literature by providing users with a single reference containing the major ideas in applied psychometrics with instructions and examples for conducting the analyses in SPSS. In addition, we will provide original macros for estimating a variety of statistics and conducting analyses common in educational and psychological measurement.

The sad fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton by George Eliot One of the many astounding works where Eliot deals with Christian values in a provincial setting. She imparts psychological depth to the characters and lends a realistic touch to her works. As the characters fight and survive in the battle of life, the reader is rapt by the style and form of the narrative. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
Secret Death (Detective Inspector Paul Amos Mystery Series Book 6)
"A clever, fast-paced crime thriller." Thomas WaughWhat is the mystery behind the death of Oscar Dover? Why was his sister so keen to prevent anyone knowing he had even died, let alone attend his funeral? It's unusually quiet at police headquarters when the village gossip reports a startling claim that Dover was murdered, prompting Detective Inspector Paul Amos and Detective Sergeant Juliet Swift to set off on what they fear will be a wild goose chase. But the deeper they get into the inquiry, the more intriguing it becomes. Why does even the funeral director refuse to discuss the matter? After all, Dover was just a shambling wreck of the man he once was, estranged from his daughters and cutting an increasingly lonely figure at a not very successful junk shop, full of stuff he couldn't sell.Fate keeps pointing Amos and Swift back to pursuing the inquiry - then erects barriers in their way. Amos is frustratingly sidelined to help with the Chief Constable's latest pet project but Swift pursues the inquiry with renewed zeal, despite putting herself in grave danger.A much darker side of Oscar Dover's sordid life gradually emerges, uncovering a wide range of people who had motive and opportunity to kill him.Swift eventually uncovers the truth about Dover's death. But when Amos returns to the fray, the two detectives are faced with the difficult task of proving what really happened.Praise for Rodney Hobson"A fantastic read." Tom Kasey, best-selling author of Trade-Off."Kept me guessing to the last page - and still surprised me. A gripping read." Jerusalem ALS Imaginärer Ort Bei Amos Oz

In the fall of 1961, a new cartoon made its primetime network television debut, joining Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones and Top Cat series. Titled Calvin and the Colonel, it was the creation of Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, and was produced by Kayro Productions in association with MCA TV/Revue Studios. The new cartoon was anything but new; it was the reincarnation of Gosden and Correll's Amos 'n' Andy radio program. Amos and Andy storywriters Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, who wrote for the radio show, were brought onboard to repurpose their old scripts for the new cartoon series. While characters Colonel Montgomery J. Klaxon and Calvin T. Burnside were animals, their voices, performed by Gosden and Correll, were identical to the radio's Andy Brown and George "Kingfish" Stevens characters. Explore this unique look at how Calvin and the Colonel became a cartoon, Gosden and Correll's previous 1934 animation venture, and all of the controversy that went with it.

Literary perspectives, especially as they concern the African novel genre, continue to interest the literati. This is with the aim of identifying the conflicting and similar epistemological views of African authors, as they are being impacted upon by 'Euramerican' cosmic ethos. This book is deeply reflective of the above. It explores the theoretical notions of intertextuality to explicate the appropriative desires of Ben Okri in his 'anxiety of influence' relationships with Amos Tutuola, the latter being a paternal figure in textual indegeneity, fantasy textuality in particular.
