Sleep as a State of Consciousness in Advaita Vedanta

Sleep as a State of Consciousness in Advaita Vedanta

Arvind Sharma

State University of New York Press
2004
sidottu
Explores deep sleep (susupti), one of the three states of consciousness in Advaita Vedanta, and the major role it plays in this philosophy. Indian philosophy bases itself on three states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. Deep sleep, or susupti, plays an important role in Advaita Vedanta, the major philosophical school that advocates a doctrine of pure consciousness. Explaining and savoring this paradox, this book shows how the concept of deep sleep can be used in Advaita Vedanta to reveal a philosophical insight, validate an argument, illustrate a moral, or adorn a tale. Arvind Sharma explores why sleep is a phenomenon that philosophers should be interested in and examines it in classical Hindu religious texts, including the Upanisads, and in foundational, early, and modern Advaita Vedanta.

Why Should I Write a Poem Now

Why Should I Write a Poem Now

In October 1949 the poet William Carlos Williams received a letter from a young man from India who was studying engineering at Stanford University but wanted to write poetry. Williams was intrigued enough to write back. Their intense epistolary relationship, lasting almost a decade and little known up to now, is chronicled in this edition of their letters.Rayaprol returned to India and lived a quiet life as a civil engineer. Yet his commitment to poetry, spurred by Dr. Williams's long-distance mentoring, never faltered, and the three collections he published eventually gained him a lasting position in the canon of postcolonial Anglophone poetry in India. Rich in personal details, feelings, and moods, the Rayaprol-Williams correspondence is particularly significant as it provides valuable information about transnational literary modernism in the context of American cultural influence during the Cold War as well as the role played by US philanthropic organizations and their relationship to overt and covert CIA operations in India.
Eclipse – Living in the Shadow of China`s Economic Dominance

Eclipse – Living in the Shadow of China`s Economic Dominance

Arvind Subramanian

The Peterson Institute for International Economics

In his new book, Arvind Subramanian presents the following possibilities: What if, contrary to common belief, China's economic dominance is a present-day reality rather than a faraway possibility? What if the renminbi's takeover of the dollar as the world's reserve currency is not decades, but mere years, away? And what if the United States's economic preeminence is not, as many economists and policymakers would like to believe, in its own hands, but China's to determine? Subramanian's analysis is based on a new index of economic dominance grounded in a historical perspective. His examination makes use of real-world examples, comparing China's rise with the past hegemonies of Great Britain and the United States. His attempt to quantify and project economic and currency dominance leads him to the conclusion that China's dominance is not only more imminent, but also broader in scope, and much larger in magnitude, than is currently imagined. He explores the profound effect this might have on the United States, as well as on the global financial and trade system.Subramanian concludes with a series of policy proposals for other nations to reconcile China's rise with continued openness in the global economic order, and to insure against China becoming a malign hegemon.

This book studies Hindu nationalism and deliberates on the forms Hindu self-assertion might take in the future. It examines the intersection of Hindu nationalism with the contemporary reality of India, as represented by a religiously plural society with a secular state, which possesses a social system characterised by caste, and one whose vision has been shaped by a mainstream version of Indian history. The ideology of Hindutva has had two major orientations—of how Hindus should relate to each other, and how Hindus should relate to the followers of other religions. The author provides a new orientation to both these dimensions of Hindutva ideology.A unique contribution, this book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of religion studies, history, postcolonialism, nationalism, pluralism, Indian political thought, Indian history, caste studies, political science, Hindu studies, Hindusim, sociology and political ideology, and South Asian studies.

Understanding Political Corruption

Understanding Political Corruption

Arvind K. Jain

EDWARD ELGAR PUBLISHING LTD

sidottu
This book examines the development and persistence of political corruption. Arvind Jain explores how corrupt regimes deploy a range of tools to control and weaken the mechanisms that monitor their actions, allowing them to expropriate a society’s wealth while the international economy helps them safeguard their assets. Jain examines the many forms that corrupt regimes can assume, including individual political corruption, crony capitalism and corrupt authoritarian regimes. He conducts a detailed analysis of how these regimes limit the powers of the media, distort the constitution and manipulate the electoral process to consolidate their control. The book also delves into the critical role of the international economy in facilitating political corruption by allowing the investment of illegitimately acquired wealth in global financial markets. Jain rethinks traditional paradigms by advocating for a greater focus on the role of monitoring institutions in order to combat political corruption. Students and scholars of political science, law and politics, economic crime and corruption will greatly benefit from this illuminating book. It is also a useful resource for anticorruption activists and reformers.

Combating Corruption in India

Combating Corruption in India

Arvind Verma; Ramesh Sharma

Cambridge University Press

sidottu
As corruption continues to be a persistent problem in India, concerned citizens believe empowered police agencies independent of political control are effective ways to deal with corrupt officials and politicians. What is corruption and how is it facilitated? What are the appropriate agencies to combat corruption professionally in India? Why are these not effective in deterring corrupt practices? Are the alternative solutions to tackle corruption successful? This book seeks to engage with these questions, discuss and analyze them, and conduct a thorough analysis of law, bureaucratic organizations, official data, case studies and comparative international institutions. It analyzes vast data to argue that a corrupt state only maintains the façade of rule of law but will not permit any inquiry beyond that of individual deviance. Using criminological perspectives, it presents a novel mechanism, the 'Doctrine of Good Housekeeping', for public officials to combat and prevent corruption within their own institutions.
Violence and the Sikhs

Violence and the Sikhs

Violence and the Sikhs interrogates conventional typologies of violence and non-violence in Sikhism by rethinking the dominant narrative of Sikhism as a deviation from the ostensibly original pacifist-religious intentions and practices of its founders. This Element highlights competing logics of violence drawn from primary sources of Sikh literature, thereby complicating our understanding of the relationship between spirituality and violence, connecting it to issues of sovereignty and the relationship between Sikhism and the State during the five centuries of its history. By cultivating a non-oppositional understanding of violence and spirituality, this Element provides an innovative method for interpreting events of 'religious violence'. In doing so it provides a novel perspective on familiar themes such as martyrdom, Martial Race theory, warfare and (post)colonial conflicts in the Sikh context.

This book explores cognitive behavior among Internet of Things. Using a series of current and futuristic examples – appliances, personal assistants, robots, driverless cars, customer care, engineering, monetization, and many more – the book covers use cases, technology and communication aspects of how machines will support individuals and organizations. This book examines the Cognitive Things covering a number of important questions: • What are Cognitive Things? • What applications can be driven from Cognitive Things – today and tomorrow? • How will these Cognitive Things collaborate with each and other, with individuals and with organizations? • What is the cognitive era? How is it different from the automation era? • How will the Cognitive Things support or accelerate human problem solving? • Which technical components make up cognitive behavior? • How does it redistribute the work-load between humans and machines? • What types of data can be collected from them and shared with external organizations? • How do they recognize and authenticate authorized users? How is the data safeguarded from potential theft? Who owns the data and how are the data ownership rights enforced? Overall, Sathi explores ways in which Cognitive Things bring value to individuals as well as organizations and how to integrate the use of the devices into changing organizational structures. Case studies are used throughout to illustrate how innovators are already benefiting from the initial explosion of devices and data. Business executives, operational managers, and IT professionals will understand the fundamental changes required to fully benefit from cognitive technologies and howto utilize them for their own success.

This book brings together new approaches to the study of Sikh religion, culture and ethnicity being pursued in the diaspora by Sikh academics in western universities in Britain and North America. An important aspect of the volume is the diversity of topics that are engaged - including film and gender theory, theology, hermeneutics, deconstruction, semiotics and race theory - and brought to bear on the individual contributors' specialism within Sikh studies, thereby helping to explode previously static dichotomies such as insider vs. outsider or history vs. tradition. The volume should have strong appeal both to an academic market including students of politics, religious studies and South Asian studies, and to a more general English-speaking Sikh readership.
Agrarian Movements in India

Agrarian Movements in India

nidottu
First published in 1982. In this volume we present a collection of original papers, edited by Arvind N. Das, on agrarian movements in the populous Indian state of Bihar. These movements are traced from the early twentieth century through to the Naxalite activity of the recent past; their content and the forces which gave rise to them are examined; and the response of the state — both the colonial state and the post-colonial state — is identified. Believed to be a significant contribution to the literature on agrarian movements, which should be of considerable value to both specialists on India and to those with a more general interest in the agrarian question.
