Autumn's Opinions: Poems

We are able to offer with joy to our readers worldwide this poetry book in free verse, with surprising, attractive, friendly and honest ways, written by the Romanian poet Toni Constantin Georgescu. If the chosen themes are inevitably the usual ones, the style is new, and the figures of speech are real windows through which you can watch the inside of some ideas, real windows through which you look inside yourself. The changes of direction, the atypical digressions, the vague suggestions and the joining of words that don't know one another, push you to continue reading. Toni Constantin Georgescu, a teacher of mathematics, is also a poet with an indestructible spiritual youth. Over the years, authentic pens have come to praise and recommend this author to his readers. Here is what some of them have written about his work: "Toni Constantin Georgescu has an unmistakable voice in Romanian lyrics, being a first class poet. His poems rebalance us spiritually and give us seeds of thoughts, so they will follow us for a long time after reading them." (Vasile Poenaru); "Toni Constantin Georgescu's verses have an explosive force, which immediately seduces our soul." (Emi Pop, the Online Bookshop "Book, the best friend");"The rhetoric of Toni Constantin Georgescu's poems creates images so full of expressivity, that in some places their joining overwhelms." (Ion Malancu, in "Paradox" magazine, Bucharest); "The poet is a modern classic who permanently resettles the old motives in unexpected combinations, with a surprising logic in forming them, managing, with each verse, to jump to a new dimension of understanding. The nostalgia of the woman's perfume that every man craves for pierces in some places, seconded by the same depth of meditation, unseen by the contemporary poets." (Ladislau Daradici, in "Vatra Veche" magazine, T rgu Mureş); "A kind of poetry that reflects the human condition and everything fragile within it: questions, worries and fears, joys and sadness, overwhelming ephemeral feelings. And if you read kilometers of poetry, where not only the verses, but also the names of the authors give the impression that they are interchangeable, the poetry of this author has a brand: the Toni Constantin Georgescu brand." (S nziana Batişte, in "Agero Stuttgart" magazine, Germany). We hope that the emotions and the thoughts raised by this book will inspire you to read this author's other volumes of poetry (Utopiile dimineţii-Morning's Utopias, n braţele nt mplării-In Happening's Arms, Aştept nd adevărul-Waiting for Truth).

""Compelling . . . a rare find . . . a very special gift. This book of growing older stories is must reading for all ages, especially older adults. Written in fascinating style, these stories can do more to combat ageism than any book I have read in recent years."" -- Miriam Dunson, former Associate for Older Adult Ministry, Presbyterian Church (USA) ""Most older people we have known may not have made the history books, but they have made the history--of our families, our churches, our communities, our nations. Richard Morgan teaches us to once again listen to the stories of our elders because they are our history, our real history. Morgan helps us see--through the stories and words of those best suited to offer useful answers, namely those who have already been there--that for Christians aging is an experience we do not have to confront alone."" -- Stephen Sapp, Dean of Religious Studies, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida ""As one highlight involved in recording life biographies of people of all ages, Autumn Wisdom has special meaning for preserving the stories of people in the third age of life. If we don't preserve these stories in some way, they are lost. As the ancient saying states, 'If we lose the stories of older people, we lose a library ' These are eighty-one stories of older people which will not be lost."" -- Beth Sanders, Director of Life Bio (www.lifebio.com) Richard L. Morgan is a retired minister and a writer residing in a retirement community in North Huntington, Pennsylvania. He continues his work of preserving the life stories of older people through interviewing them and recording their stories for their families. He is also the author of Remembering Your Story (2nd edition). His Web site is www.richardmorganauthor.com
Autumn Equinox

Autumn Equinox

Jabbour Douaihy’s Autumn Equinox is a diary of a young man recently resettled in his Lebanese village after going to college in the United States. It continues from the end of May through the September equinox of 1986, narrating his efforts to remake himself through adjustments to his reading, writing, and eating habits, his dress, his posture, his family relationships, his love life. . . . The diary begins with a view of an Israeli bombing in South Lebanon and ends with a description of refugee families fleeing to the mountain villages. Otherwise, except for allusions to what is going on in the capital, the Lebanese Civil War is far from the story, although its violence has never been far from this village. America, personified by a Lara who does not answer his letters, is a faraway land of nostalgia. The village is here, at the center of the young man’s narration, peopled by comic characters who seem to insist on their own unchanging selfhoods and to resist his attempts to be different. The Civil War and the Occupation, the author seems to be saying, are not the only sources of turmoil. Violence and revenge have been part of the people’s consciousness, and people might indeed need to redefine themselves while at the same time adjusting to the environment.

“No one creates so many memorable, saucy aphorisms-piquant, bitter-sweet, arousing.” -Pat C. Hoy II, New York UniversitySam Pickering's essays are funny and wise-and always intoxicating, eggnog to warm glazed winter nights and juleps to cool sweltering summer days. He wanders Connecticut, Canada, and the South, seeding his old farm in Nova Scotia with words and scattering paragraphs in and about classrooms at the University of Connecticut. He describes the great flowerings of summers and falls. He mulls over vanishing friendships, then hunts for buried treasure in a library. He endures a massage, ponders the genteel, and explores shadowy alcoves and books. For him home is where heart and heartache thrive together. Students make him laugh and weep, and in part his book is a teaching manual crammed with anecdotal good sense. He buries his old dog George and picks up Bert, a rescue dachshund addicted to unmentionable munchies and cloddish doggy behavior, an animal who obstinately refuses to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Pickering runs road races, although he says anyone in a motorized walker could leave him far behind. In “Premortem” he anatomizes his vanishing muscles and then decides to have a knee operation in hopes of shuffling fast enough to keep a heeltap ahead of the pale rider on the white horse. This is a book about love and happiness-a restorative collection that shows readers how to enjoy life's small glories even among its indignities. When the going gets sour, Pickering tells a joke and transforms the sour into sweet delight.Sam Pickering teaches English at the University of Connecticut. The inspiration for the teacher in the movie Dead Poets Society, Pickering is a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers and a master of the essay form. Among his dozen collections of essays are A Little Fling and The Last Book, both published by the University of Tennessee Press.
