The Structure of Policy Change

The Structure of Policy Change

Derek A. Epp

University of Chicago Press
2018
sidottu
When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the Red Scare seized the American public. While President Eisenhower cautioned restraint, his hand was forced, and NASA's budget had increased five thousand percent over its pre-Sputnik levels by the time President Kennedy proposed landing a man on the moon. Spending on the space race is in no way unique; Almost every policy area has its own Sputnik-type story, where waves of popular support for an idea (or disillusionment with a previous one) created new political priorities, resulting in dramatic changes to the budget or compelling agencies to respond quickly with little knowledge or preparation. Is this instability an inherent feature of the policy process, or is it possible for an agency to deal with problems in a way that insulates it from swings in public opinion and thus imposes some stability on the decision making process? Derek A. Epp argues that some agencies can indeed do that and that instability is at least partially a function of poor institutional design. While it is inherently more challenging to maintain stability around complex problems like immigration or climate change, the deliberative process itself can affect the degree of stability around an issue. Epp looks at whether agencies follow a deliberative model for decision making, in which policies are developed by means of debate among a small group of policymakers, or a collective model, in which the opinions of many people are aggregated, as with the stock market. He argues that, in many instances, the collective model produces more informed and stable policy outcomes that can be adapted more readily to new information and changing public priorities.

The Masculine Self in Late Medieval England

The Masculine Self in Late Medieval England

Derek G. Neal

University of Chicago Press
2008

What did it mean to be a man in medieval England? Most would answer this question by alluding to the power and status men enjoyed in a patriarchal society, or they might refer to iconic images of chivalrous knights. While these popular ideas do have their roots in the history of the aristocracy, the experience of ordinary men was far more complicated.Marshalling a wide array of colorful evidence - including legal records, letters, medical sources, and the literature of the period - Derek G. Neal here plumbs the social and cultural significance of masculinity during the generations born between the Black Death and the Protestant Reformation. He discovers that social relations between men, founded on the ideals of honesty and self-restraint, were at least as important as their domination and control of women in defining their identities. By carefully exploring the social, physical, and psychological aspects of masculinity, "The Masculine Self in Late Medieval England" offers a uniquely comprehensive account of the exterior and interior lives of medieval men.

Braver Canada

Braver Canada

Derek H. Burney; Fen Osler Hampson

McGill-Queen's University Press

The world is changing - geopolitically and economically - at an alarmingly fast pace. Populism, protectionism, and authoritarianism are on the rise. Braver Canada analyzes these and many other global shifts, offering provocative prescriptions for both the public and the private sectors. Reviewing the foreign policy challenges, achievements, and missteps of the Justin Trudeau government, Derek Burney and Fen Hampson argue that the country's leadership must craft a new approach to global affairs based on a solid grasp of current and emerging global political and economic realities. They focus on competitiveness, trade, energy, environment, and immigration and refugee issues, also discussing a recalibration of relations with China and India. Expanding on the ideas and policy recommendations in their previous book, Brave New Canada, which called for Canada to diversify its economic ties outside the United States, they note how the global and regional environment has shifted dramatically in recent years. A timely and compelling analysis, Braver Canada lays out the challenges for Canada in a rapidly changing, turbulent world and the strategies required for future prosperity.
The First Railroads: Atlas of Early Railroads
A highly illustrated volume tracing the emergence of modern railways. Praise for the author's previous title, America Discovered "Hayes offers more than just the state's emergent political boundaries and geological elevations. He presents a fascinating, map-based chronicle of the region's legendary gold rush, the gradual domination of its railroads, the development of its diverse ethnic composition, its blazing urban cataclysms, and its role in World War II. While laudably information-dense, the text is also an appealing, highly enjoyable read." --Library Journal In this book, Derek Hayes compiles archival maps and illustrations, many never before published, showing the locations and routes of the world's early railways, as well as the locomotive and rail technology that was key to the development of those railroads. In addition to maps, the illustrations include photos of most of the surviving first locomotives from collections around the world and of replicas too, where they exist. Much of the world's early railways originated in Britain, but Hayes also considers the earliest systems in North America, continental Europe, and elsewhere. The book covers the emergence of the first steam locomotives, including the historically important Stockton and Darlington, the world's first public railway system to use steam locomotives, and Liverpool and Manchester, for its pioneering use of cast iron girders. In addition to mainstream railways, atmospheric railways are considered as well as electric railways, underground railways, monorails, and mountain (rack) railways, all of which have fascinating histories. For The First Railroads, Derek Hayes travelled to most of the locations mentioned and visited railway museums all over the world, amassing a wealth of information and illustrative materials, including never before seen ephemera. Here he proves again his reputation for in-depth research and rare photographs and maps -- and for making it enjoyably readable.

"How we've longed to hold you, dear one," Marillee wept. "All this time, in the darkness, we remembered," she said. "We remembered how we left you, without explanation, without hope, and how we grieved How beautiful a woman you have become, and how powerful, that you found this place."The skin of Marillee's face bulged and rippled, as if something flitted briefly beneath its surface. Jalwyn, who watched the reunion wordlessly, gasped and drew back. Teraud noted the motion and snarled, baring sharp white teeth."Say nothing, mage " he hissed. His handsome features contorted in the same fierce manner as the woman's. The flesh of his exposed neck undulated. "Breathe a word, and I shall carve your throat "Silky lips closed smoothly over the bared fangs. The bulge in his throat abated. When Teraud turned to Alonna, his smile was beatific, welcoming, his face comely and exuberant once more.Jalwyn, dumbfounded, looked to Alonna, who took her first unsteady step towards her parents . . . Welcome to Undermarch, where Creation seeks a second chance.

The Entrepreneurs

The Entrepreneurs

Derek Lidow

Columbia University Press
2022
sidottu
Finalist, 2023 George R. Terry Book Award, Academy of ManagementEntrepreneurs are among the primary shapers of our culture, yet their role in driving progress and influencing society has often been overlooked. As far back as we can trace human history, there have been entrepreneurs. Almost five millennia ago, copper tool manufacturers set up a factory in what today is southwest Spain, profiting for hundreds of years from trade around the Mediterranean. Papyri document the diverse investments of an ancient Egyptian businessperson, from grain-yielding land to flax for linen cloth. What do these figures have in common with renowned modern entrepreneurs, and how do their similarities help us achieve a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship as well as the potential for a healthier, wealthier, and more equitable and sustainable future?Derek Lidow delves into the deep history of innovation to deliver essential new insights into how entrepreneurs create value and bring about change. Telling the captivating stories of people from many different cultures over thousands of years, he shows how entrepreneurs transform the world through relentless innovation. Lidow demonstrates that far from being heroic lone individuals, they copy and then add to the inventions of others. The cumulative innovations of swarms of entrepreneurs expand the scale, scope, and range of products and services. Lidow emphasizes how entrepreneurship can harm society as well as benefit it, and he underscores ways to mitigate its harmful side and harness its positive effects. By highlighting the fundamental qualities of innovation throughout history, this book provides indispensable new perspective on how it is shaping our present and future.
