Perpendicular Magnetic Recording

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording

Sakhrat Khizroev; Dmitri Litvinov

Springer
2010
nidottu
Magnetic recording is expected to become core technology in a multi-billion dollar industry in the in the very near future. Some of the most critical discoveries regarding perpendicular write and playback heads and perpendicular media were made only during the last several years as a result of extensive and intensive research in both academia and industry in their fierce race to extend the superparamagnetic limit in the magnetic recording media. These discoveries appear to be critical for implementing perpendicular magnetic recording into an actual disk drive. This book addresses all the open questions and issues which need to be resolved before perpendicular recording can finally be implemented successfully, and is the first monograph in many years to address this subject. This book is intended for graduate students, young engineers and even senior and more experienced researchers in this field who need to acquire adequate knowledge of the physics of perpendicular magnetic recording in order to further develop the field of perpendicular recording.

This book seeks to illuminate what China's Belt and Road initiative truly means for the global south, offering historical context and explaining the vision that the Chinese State has in coordinating actions in the territorial, political and economic spheres in a multilateral pretension. How does the BRI generate economic returns for China, and what are the political and economic impacts of the BRI? In this provocative and deeply researched new work, the authors provide a new framework for understanding the BRI, one which will be useful to scholars, policymakers and economists.

This book puts the trade war between the United States and China in historical context. Exploring the dynamics of isolation and internal reform from a Chinese perspective, the author draws upon valuable insights from China's years of isolation prior to the famous Nixon-Mao summit. Advocating internal reform as a more productive strategy than conflict with other powers, this powerful argument for globalization with Chinese characteristics will be of interest to scholars of China, economists, and political scientists.

Modern Advanced Mathematics for Engineers

Modern Advanced Mathematics for Engineers

A convenient single source for vital mathematical concepts, written by engineers and for engineers Almost every discipline in electrical and computer engineering relies heavily on advanced mathematics. Modern Advanced Mathematics for Engineers builds a strong foundation in modern applied mathematics for engineering students, and offers them a concise and comprehensive treatment that summarizes and unifies their mathematical knowledge using a system focused on basic concepts rather than exhaustive theorems and proofs. The authors provide several levels of explanation and exercises involving increasing degrees of mathematical difficulty to recall and develop basic topics such as calculus, determinants, Gaussian elimination, differential equations, and functions of a complex variable. They include an assortment of examples ranging from simple illustrations to highly involved problems as well as a number of applications that demonstrate the concepts and methods discussed throughout the book. This broad treatment also offers: *Key mathematical tools needed by engineers working in communications, semiconductor device simulation, and control theory *Concise coverage of fundamental concepts such as sets, mappings, and linearity *Thorough discussion of topics such as distance, inner product, and orthogonality *Essentials of operator equations, theory of approximations, transform methods, and *partial differential equations *A treatment that is adaptable for use with computer systems Modern Advanced Mathematics for Engineers gives students a strong foundation in modern applied mathematics and the confidence to apply it across diverse engineering disciplines. It makes an excellent companion to less general engineering texts and a useful reference for practitioners.

The disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991 rapidly and irrevocably transformed Central Asia's political landscape. This region of five sovereign states with a population of some fifty million people quickly became a major focus of interest and influence for competing poles of power. The eminent contributors to this volume offer a four-part analysis of the region's new importance in world affairs. Rajan Menon examines the place of Central Asia in a global perspective. Eugene Rumer considers the perspective of the post-9/11 United States. Dimitri Trenin looks at the region from the standpoint of traditional hegemon Russia. Huasheng Zhao provides the view from economic superpower-in-the-making China.

The Diagnosis of Writing in a Second or Foreign Language is a comprehensive survey of diagnostic assessment of second/foreign language (SFL) writing. In this innovative book, a compelling case is made for SFL writing as an individual, contextual, and multidimensional ability, combining several theoretically informed approaches upon which to base diagnosis. Using the diagnostic cycle as the overarching framework, the book starts with the planning phase, cover design, development, and delivery of diagnostic assessment, ending with feedback and feed-forward aspects to feed diagnostic information into the teaching and learning process. It covers means to diagnose both the writing processes and products, including the design and development of diagnostic tasks and rating scales, as well as automated approaches to assessment. Also included is a range of existing instruments and approaches to diagnosing SFL writing.Addressing large-scale as well as classroom contexts, this volume is useful for researchers, teachers, and educational policy-makers in language learning.

Russian Security Strategy Under Putin: U.S. and Russian Perspectives - U.S. Interests in the New Eurasia - Russia's Threat Perception and Strategic Posture
The two papers grouped together here were delivered at the Strategic Studies Institute's annual strategy conference for 2007. As the theme of the conference was global security challenges to the United States and proceeded on a region by region basis, these papers were delivered during the session devoted to security challenges issuing from what is now called Eurasia, i.e., to a large degree the former Soviet Union. The authors illustrate the degree to which great power rivalry in Eurasia has become a major security issue and source of growing Russo-American tensions. Whereas Dr. R. Craig Nation lays out some of the fundamental macro-strategic issues of this rivalry and U.S. goals in Eurasia, as well as the consequences of Russian resistance to Western and American pressures, Dr. Dmitri Trenin emphasizes the growing intensity of Russian threat perceptions.
