The Haunted Daughter Of Cincinnati: Demons, Ghosts, and Angels in the Queen City

Cincinnati, like many cities, has a rich history populated with saints and sinners. If you believe in the afterlife, then you must concede that those extreme examples of morality and immorality tend to live on. In their book, Eric & Vickie Engel (a powerful writing team) examine how paranormal activity is not immune to the 'moral' slant we often attribute to the living. The Engels chronical the two extremes, and the effect they have on the living, by following the story of a native Cincinnatian: Rosie. Her life, from the time she was a small child, was heavily influenced by the paranormal in unimaginable ways. Almost every path she chose (or was compelled to take) was somehow shaped by something far beyond her control, and often something beyond her understanding... something we call 'the paranormal.' This book does not attempt to explain those strange events. It does not label ghosts, demons, and angels. Instead, it illuminates them for you, the reader, and hopes you'll draw your own conclusions while keeping an open mind.

Richard Greenham was one of the most important and respected figures among the Elizabethan clergy. His contemporaries described him as the founder of a previously unknown pastoral art: the cure of cases of conscience. Despite his fame in the Elizabethan period as a model pastor, pioneer in reformed casuistry, and founder of one of the first rectory seminaries, scholars have made little use of his life and works in their study of Elizabethan religious life. This study restores Richard Greenham to the central place he held in the development of Elizabethan Reformed parochial ministry. The monograph-length introduction includes a biography, an analysis of his pastoral style, and a study of his approach to curing cases of conscience. The transcription of Rylands English Manuscript 524, cross-referenced with the published editions of the sayings, offers a useful source to scholars who wish to study the collecting and ’framing’ process of the humanist pedagogical tradition. The selection of early published works includes Greenham’s (unfinished) catechism, treatises on the Sabbath and marriage, and advice on reading scripture and educating children.

The Adaptive Decision Maker argues that people use a variety of strategies to make judgments and choices. The authors introduce a model that shows how decision makers balance effort and accuracy considerations and predicts which strategy a person will use in a given situation. A series of experiments testing the model are presented, and the authors analyse how the model can lead to improved decisions and opportunities for further research.

Visual ecology is the study of how animals use visual systems to meet their ecological needs, how these systems have evolved, and how they are specialized for particular visual tasks. Visual Ecology provides the first up-to-date synthesis of the field to appear in more than three decades. Featuring some 225 illustrations, including more than 140 in color, spread throughout the text, this comprehensive and accessible book begins by discussing the basic properties of light and the optical environment. It then looks at how photoreceptors intercept light and convert it to usable biological signals, how the pigments and cells of vision vary among animals, and how the properties of these components affect a given receptor's sensitivity to light. The book goes on to examine how eyes and photoreceptors become specialized for an array of visual tasks, such as navigation, evading prey, mate choice, and communication. A timely and much-needed resource for students and researchers alike, Visual Ecology also includes a glossary and a wealth of examples drawn from the full diversity of visual systems. * The most up-to-date overview of visual ecology available* Features some 225 illustrations, including more than 140 in color, spread throughout the text* Guides readers from the basic physics of light to the role of visual systems in animal behavior* Includes a glossary and a wealth of real-world examples

The properties of knotted and linked configurations in space have long been of interest to physicists and mathematicians. More recently and more widely, they have become important to biologists, chemists, computer scientists, and engineers. The depth and breadth of their applications are widely appreciated. Nevertheless, fundamental and challenging questions remain to be answered. Based on a Special Session at the AMS Sectional Meeting in Las Vegas (NV) in April 2001, this volume discusses critical questions and introduces new ideas that will stimulate multi-disciplinary applications. Some of the papers are primarily theoretical; others are experimental. Some are purely mathematical; others deal with applications of mathematics to theoretical computer science, engineering, physics, biology, or chemistry. Connections are made between classical knot theory and the physical world of macromolecules, such as DNA, geometric linkages, rope, and even cooked spaghetti. This book introduces the world of physical knot theory in all its manifestations and points the way for new research. It is suitable for a diverse audience of mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, biologists, chemists, and physicists.
Whatever Happened to The Gospel of Grace?

Whatever Happened to The Gospel of Grace?

James Montgomery Boice; Lane T. Dennis; Eric J. Alexander

Crossway Books
2009

Combines a serious examination of the state of today's church and a powerful solution: reclaiming the gospel of grace found in the confessional truths of the Reformation. Though the Christian church has achieved a worldly sort of success-big numbers, big budgets, big outreaches-these are not good days for evangelicalism. Attendance is down, and it is increasingly difficult to distinguish so-called "believers" from their non-Christian neighbors-all because the gospel of grace has been neglected. In this work, now in paperback, the late James Montgomery Boice identifies what's happened within evangelicalism and suggests how the confessional statements of the Reformation-Scripture alone, Christ alone, grace alone, faith alone, and glory to God alone-can ignite full-scale revival. "A church without these convictions has ceased to be a true church, whatever else it may be," he wrote, but "if we hold to these doctrines, our churches and those we influence will grow strong."

The conventional means of pursuing an arts career is evolving at a rapid pace, and a paradigm shift is required for artists to re-invent how they will shape their own careers. To do so, one must have the tools and a vision for what is possible. As such, this book will firstly discuss how to unlock and nurture the creative process. Attacking creativity as a process to be honed will allow the student to develop the big idea projects necessary to be successful in today's arts performance landscape. In addition to the creative process, the typical college curriculum also never addresses what a technical rider is, how an artist protects their intellectual property, how composers obtain commissions, how to communicate with arts presenters, book a tour, handle the logistics of a tour, deal with taxes and bookkeeping, or understand contracts with gallery owners or presenters. As traditional performing jobs wane, a sea change in student preparation is needed. Addressing students across the artistic spectrum, this book offers ideas and examples of ways to develop a new generation of Artist Entrepreneurs prepared for the new arts economy.

sidottu
This book is a comprehensive guide to the surgery-first orthognathic approach (SFOA), which overcomes the problem of the very prolonged treatment period associated with conventional orthognathic surgery by avoiding the presurgical phase. The shorter duration of the treatment is due to a phenomenon triggered by the surgery, termed the regional acceleratory phenomenon, whereby higher osteoclastic activity and metabolic changes at the dentoalveolar level accelerate postoperative orthodontic tooth movement. In this book, readers will find in-depth discussion of integration of the basic biological principles of SFOA with sound biomechanical doctrines. The authors’ own treatment protocol for surgical and orthodontic management is fully explained. Diagnosis and treatment plans are presented for various skeletal maxillofacial deformities, and key considerations in pre- and postsurgical patient care are highlighted. Detailed attention is given to complication management and to the impact ofrecent advances such as 3D image integration, virtual surgical planning, and rapid prototyping of surgical wafers. This richly illustrated book will be an ideal resource and quick reference guide for orthodontists at all levels of experience.

Designed to complement the third edition of Forensic Anthropology, this dynamic lab manual introduces students to forensic anthropology practice using current, validated, and accepted methods. Whereas the accompanying textbook provides in-depth topic coverage and literature review, Lab Manual for Forensic Anthropology emphasizes procedural information and concepts and offers students hands-on practice to facilitate deeper learning and understanding. The lab manual features 15 modules, which correspond to the 15 chapters in the related textbook. Each module begins with objectives and then provides students with a series of exercises meant to help them apply newly acquired knowledge from each topical area. All exercises are case-based and include a scenario to help students better understand the context of the case. Assessments allow students to reflect upon and test their knowledge, and a series of appendices equip readers with essential tools and information. The second edition of this lab manual better aligns with the content found within the textbook Forensic Anthropology. It is a comprehensive, practical, and relevant tool for students and aspiring practitioners in the discipline.
