2022 Foreword Indies Finalist in Travel As we age, we all begin to have physical difficulties to contend with. In No Spring Chicken, Francine Falk-Allen - a polio survivor who knows a thing or two about living with a disability - offers her own take on how to navigate the complications aging brings with equanimity (and a sense of humor). The handbook is divided into three sections: Part I is a jaunt through accessible travel pleasures and pitfalls in several parts of the world; Part II addresses the adaptation people who love a handicapped or aging person could make in order to have a lighter, more mutually rewarding relationship with him or her, as well as advice for physically challenged and aging persons themselves regarding self-care, exercise, pain management, healthcare, and more; and Part III discusses the challenges, rewards and logistics of engaging with groups of people who share similar issues. Accessible and wryly funny, No Spring Chicken is a fun and informative guide to living your best and longest life - whatever your physical challenges, and whatever your age.

Frank and Naomi Wolff were happily married in 1908. She was a Kansas farmgirl; he was a railroad engineer. She was excited to embark upon her role as wife and mother with a hardworking man, and in their early years together they made a life in thriving Ogden, Utah. Despite Frank's almost-constant absence for his job riding the rails, which left pretty Naomi to raise their children virtually alone, their romantic relationship begat fourteen offspring in eighteen years. Like other lower-middle-class women, Naomi's life was consumed with caring for her brood, who became helpers as soon as they could fold a diaper - and who, by and by, were required to attend the school of hard knocks as much as public schools. Affection and struggle endured within the family, crowded into a humble house. Despite the respite of occasional family train trips across the plains, the marriage ultimately faced exceptional challenges, just before the Depression era began. What scandals led Frank Wolff to abandon his younger children at an orphanage far from home? And why did his elder children keep this a secret for eighty years? Based on true family history, A Wolff in the Family is a gripping saga permeated with misogyny, prejudice, and passion ... for fans of Kristin Hannah's The Four Winds.

We are often caught up in life asking God for all kinds of things. Do we ever ask God how He's doing? How He spends his day? Grade schooler Annie has questions about God and goes to her mom for guidance. As mom wonders about the answers she will give Annie, she suggests talking to Him about her questions. "I never know how to talk to Him", says Annie. And so begins an interesting dream and some answers Annie didn't expect. This story will hopefully begin a dialog between parents or caregivers with their children of how God can take a active part in the people we become as Christians to be caring and kind children of God and a reflection of Him to our world. As a child of God I have spent over 40 years in Developmental Infant and Toddler care. Now retired, my education was in Early Childhood Education. As a teacher, supervisor, director and grant recipient I wanted to bring to children and parents a greater understanding of raising our children to all they can be as adults and children of God, praising Him and learning to trust Him in a real relationship with our Lord. My husband Monte and I raised two daughters and now have four "breath-taking" grandchildren and two great-grandchildren in Lincoln, Nebraska. I believe God does have a plan for each of us if we seek Him with our whole hearts. My hobbies are being involved in my church through quilting, hospitality committee, women's Bible studies, singing, drawing, and amateur gardening, and of course spending time with a large extended family.

"Francine Prose is a powerhouse. The Vixen will fascinate and complicate the histories that haunt our present moments. Like Coney Island's Cyclone, this story tumbles and tangles a reader's grip of reality. It's told with the heart, humor and daring of a true artist. Prose's Vixen is a triumph and a trip though the solid magic that books make real."--Samantha Hunt"A rollicking trickster of a novel, wondrously funny and wickedly addictive."--Maria Semple Critically acclaimed, bestselling author Francine Prose returns with a dazzling new novel set in the glamorous world of 1950s New York publishing, the story of a young man tasked with editing a steamy bodice-ripper based on the recent trial and execution of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg--an assignment that will reveal the true cost of entering that seductive, dangerous new world. It's 1953, and Simon Putnam, a recent Harvard graduate newly hired by a distinguished New York publishing firm, has entered a glittering world of three-martini lunches, exclusive literary parties, and old-money aristocrats in exquisitely tailored suits, a far cry from his loving, middle-class Jewish family in Coney Island. But Simon's first assignment--editing The Vixen, the Patriot and the Fanatic, a lurid bodice-ripper improbably based on the recent trial and execution of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, a potboiler intended to shore up the firm's failing finances--makes him question the cost of admission. Because Simon has a secret that, at the height of the Red Scare and the McCarthy hearings, he cannot reveal: his beloved mother was a childhood friend of Ethel Rosenberg's. His parents mourn Ethel's death.Simon's dilemma grows thornier when he meets The Vixen's author, the startlingly beautiful, reckless, seductive Anya Partridge, ensconced in her opium-scented boudoir in a luxury Hudson River mental asylum. As mysteries deepen, as the confluence of sex, money, politics and power spirals out of Simon's control, he must face what he's lost by exchanging the loving safety of his middle-class Jewish parents' Coney Island apartment for the witty, whiskey-soaked orbit of his charismatic boss, the legendary Warren Landry. Gradually Simon realizes that the people around him are not what they seem, that everyone is keeping secrets, that ordinary events may conceal a diabolical plot--and that these crises may steer him toward a brighter future. At once domestic and political, contemporary and historic, funny and heartbreaking, enlivened by surprising plot turns and passages from Anya's hilariously bad novel, The Vixen illuminates a period of history with eerily striking similarities to the current moment. Meanwhile it asks timeless questions: How do we balance ambition and conscience? What do social mobility and cultural assimilation require us to sacrifice? How do we develop an authentic self, discover a vocation, and learn to live with the mysteries of love, family, art, life and loss?

Self, Identity, and Collective Action

Based on the work of George Herbert Mead, Han Joas, and Axel Honneth, as well as the author’s own personal and academic identities and journeys, Self, Identity, and Collective Action argues that the self and action are strictly related. Reading these authors provided Francine Tremblay with the theoretical ground to stand on while thinking about identity and how it is linked to civic participation. She posits that Mead’s work and its link to action must be revisited and given its rightful place in sociology, and thatsociology must be radical, committed, and passionate.
