Full text.In Holland, poor but industrious and honorable 15-year-old Hans Brinker and his younger sister Gretel yearn to participate in December's great ice skating race on the canal. They have little chance of doing well on their handmade wooden skates, but the prospect of the race and the prize of the silver skates excites them and fires their dreams...This novel introduced the sport of Dutch speed skating to Americans, and in U.S. media Hans Brinker is still considered the prototypical speed skater.

Is there a truly low-cost way to get into orbit that is being overlooked; and is there any real substance to the claims of UFOs? In our own time, these two topics are becoming an ever-larger part of the national dialog. This novel explores how both of these intertwined possibilities may be moving from fiction to fact. Hans-Peter, the novel's namesake, has spent his considerable career looking for that truly low-cost way into orbit. From an abandoned Air Force Base now called Norton Field, he has focused on tri-propellant rocket engines. His work is generally scoffed off as science fiction, but who is to say how near we are to his hypersonic airplane. Ruthiebell, an old college acquaintance and now the science editor of the largest newspaper in L.A., is one of the few people who remember Hans-Peter's interest in Low Earth Orbit. She is also discreet enough that "Black World" whistleblowers are willing to give her their best information. She knows things most insiders don't and has developed her own agenda. When she learns that Hans-Peter's titanium metals factory has rolled out a new hypersonic airplane, she decides to renew her acquaintance. She knows from anonymous sources that at extreme altitudes and hypersonic speeds there's more up there than thin air. On the pretext of reporting his experimental flights, she hopes to achieve her own goals. She decides to visit him and see how much she can squeeze out of her old friend.

The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen. A vain emperor who cares about nothing except wearing and displaying clothes hires weavers who promise him they will make him the best suit of clothes. The weavers are con-men who convince the emperor they are using a fine fabric invisible to anyone who is either unfit for his position or "hopelessly stupid." The emperor's ministers cannot see the clothes themselves, but pretend that they can for fear of appearing unfit for their positions, and the emperor does the same. Finally, the weavers report that the suit is finished, they mime dressing him, and the emperor marches in procession before his subjects.

This book investigates the writings of German intellectual historian and philosopher Hans Blumenberg. While Blumenberg was not an explicitly political thinker and remains relatively under-explored in Anglophone academia, this project demonstrates that his work makes a valuable contribution to political science. The author considers the intellectual contributions Blumenberg makes to a variety of themes focusing primarily on myth. Rather than seeing myths in a pejorative sense, as primitive modes of thought that have been overcome, Blumenberg reveals that myths are crucial to dealing with the existential anxieties we face. When we trace his thought as it developed throughout his life, we find a rich source of philosophical insights that could enhance our understandings of politics today.

This book highlights and develops a hitherto neglected area of Hans Blumenberg's contributions, i.e., history and philosophy of science. It covers both Blumenberg’s works on the history of ideas and conceptual change, as well as his studies on transformative periods and his intellectual history of technology. Hans Blumenberg (1920-1996) was one of the leading German philosophers after the Second World War, bridging from the continental tradition of philosophy, conceptual history and metaphorology. This volume, though, explores the methodological instruments that he developed and how we may use them to do history and philosophy of science. In doing so it opens up a new field of research and provides insight into further developing a continental history and philosophy of science, making this book of great interest to both historians and philosophers alike.

By seamlessly merging diverse fields, Specht demonstrated how curiosity, vision, and diversity can drive groundbreaking innovation and create lasting societal impact. Unlike conventional scientific biographies that often focus on a single discipline, this book highlights Specht’s remarkable ability to bridge atomic physics, nuclear fission, ultra-relativistic heavy-ion physics, and pioneering contributions to hadron cancer therapy. The chapters cover topics such as Specht's pivotal role in developing hadron cancer therapy from fundamental heavy-ion research, his transformative work in bridging nuclear physics and medicine, and his leadership in establishing Europe's first Hadron Cancer Therapy Center. Readers will discover how Specht's interdisciplinary curiosity extended to the intersections of music, physics, and neuroscience, producing influential publications in prestigious journals and delivering lectures at world-renowned institutions. His story illustrates how cross-disciplinary approaches fuel breakthroughs that extend beyond academia to benefit humanity. The book is a must-read for scientists aspiring to leadership roles in science management and policy. Specht’s visionary leadership exemplifies the ability to make challenge-based decisions that drive progress while addressing societal needs. Through real-life anecdotes, readers gain insights into fostering collaboration, mentoring young scientists, cultivating teamwork, and making strategic decisions for a sustainable future. Scholars, researchers, and students across the disciplines of physics, medicine, and interdisciplinary studies will find invaluable lessons in Specht’s dedication to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring others.
