Harry Potter and Resistance

Although rule breaking in Harry Potter is sometimes dismissed as a distraction from Harry’s fight against Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter and Resistance makes the case that it is central to the battle against evil. Far beyond youthful hijinks or adolescent defiance, Harry’s rebellion aims to overcome problems deeper and more widespread than a single malevolent wizard. Harry and his allies engage in a resistance movement against the corruption of the Ministry of Magic as well as against the racist social norms that gave rise to Voldemort in the first place. Dumbledore’s Army and the Order of the Phoenix employ methods echoing those utilized by World War II resistance fighters and by the U.S. Civil Rights movement. The aim of this book is to explore issues that speak to our era of heightened political awareness and resistance to intolerance. Its interdisciplinary approach draws on political science, psychology, philosophy, history, race studies, and women’s studies, as well as newer interdisciplinary fields such as resistance studies, disgust studies, and creativity studies.

Harry Potter, Psychoanalysis, and the Unconscious Dimension
Harry Potter, Psychoanalysis, and the Unconscious studies the Harry Potter series through the lens of psychoanalysis focusing on the importance of space and play between the Potterverse and its readers. Twenty-five years since the first Harry Potter novel was published the popularity of the series shows little sign of decreasing: theme parks develop around the world, as have interactive websites and a plethora of academic papers and books have published around the world. Successive generations of children and their parents continue to read and enjoy these novels, their lively storytelling, complicated plots and attractive fictional characters with whom readers identify and care for. From a psychoanalytical standpoint, it seems as though some aspect of this popularity must lie in the unconscious of the reader-- which is what this book aims to explore.

Harry Warner, a 57-year-old man in Seattle, wants to go back to college to get his B.A. In doing so, he falls in love with a 20-year-old college student, Emily Waters-and subsequently develops intimate relationships with Emily's mother and grandmother. All this happens by a series of accidents, and Harry is as far from a Casanova figure as can be imagined. In fact, he is keenly aware of the complexities of interpersonal relationships and the emotional difficulties that both men and women face in the #MeToo era. The novel-recounted in the first person by Harry (and, later, by Emily and others)-is by turns funny, erotic, poignant, and shocking. Harry is a well-meaning but at times bumbling narrator-protagonist. But the heart of the book are the three women: Emily, vibrant, dynamic, and sarcastic; her mother, Joyce, melancholy, overwrought, and troubled by the desertion of her husband for a younger woman; and her grandmother, Isabelle, a Frenchwoman whose suave urbanity takes in the events surrounding her family with unflappable calm.

The story line of this book was created from the pleasure I attained while looking out of a large window at my lake property in Wisconsin. Over many years, as I drank my morning coffee or ate my lunch at noon, I observed in wonderment many different kinds of animals and birds interacting with one another.Nature continued to illustrate further observations that I hope to share as additional story lines in the future. "Harry" is the name I lovingly gave to a hummingbird that I believed had acted in a manner that could be created into a children's book as a learning method. Perhaps, this book can be enjoyed by children and can assist them in learning the importance of sharing. If you enjoyed reading Harry the Hummingbird and how he learned to share, you may also enjoy reading Chucky the Black Squirrel who learned not to fear or judge others before getting to know them, or The Canada Goslings Lilly and Scooter who learned to never give up and keep trying until they accomplish their goal.

Harry Was Right All Along: "A refreshing and thought provoking insight into the rapidly evolving high street by a skilled practitioner"
'Harry Was Right All Along' is about the changing of the guard, of new retail replacing old retail and the implications it has for all of us; it's a tale of hope, passion and ultimately optimism of a brighter future for the High Street. The underlying motivation for writing this book is that whilst retail is undergoing a rapid period of evolution where the weak will not survive, it cannot achieve this all on its own; it requires support. The book shines a light on the crisis facing the High Street and to help put the challenges facing retail at the heart of the agenda for politicians, councillors, town planners, retailers, media and consumers. It is very much the author's personal account of what is happening in retail told through a series of narratives, and in doing so it offers a positive outlook whilst sounding a warning that change must be effected now if we are to leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Retail is a sector like no other; it is part of the fabric of our lives, of our societies; our High Streets are the beating heart of our communities and have long depended on retail for their vitality and prosperity. The traditional retail model survived for decades but then came the internet, the smartphone and the age of the smart consumer......and everything changed. This book explores not only the profound changes affecting retail but the consequences of these changes, set within the socio-economic implications of a struggling High Street. However, rather than casting a dark cloud over the prospects for the sector, it points the way forward by going back over one hundred years to the days of Harry Selfridge and his philosophy which ironically is being touted today as the new retail model.
