As an ending, it's familiar: A man with no way out fakes his death and sails off into a sunset of palm trees and fuzzy drinks. But what happens when that's your beginning? For burned spy Jay Gault, a pile of money and a new face don't hide the fact that his second life is pretty empty. But when a deadly terrorist murders his best friend, everything changes. Now, Gault wants blood for blood. Tracking the killer from the oil rocks of Azerbaijan through the old cities of Europe and into the rugged Alps, nothing is going to stand in his way. Problem is, disgraced FBI Agent Samantha "Sam" Calvert has her own score to settle with the assassin, even if she has to go against orders to hunt him down. IRISH PENNANT puts Gault and Calvert on a collision course, each hoping to catch a bloodthirsty killer before he strikes again. What they don't know is that he already has a plan of his own, a daring new attack under false colors.
Originally published in 1915, this book presents an examination of the struggle between Lancaster and York from the standpoint of Wales and the Marches. The text demonstrates the unique role of the region in the development of the conflict, revealing a more formidable and decisive influence than generally believed. It is also notable for using Welsh poets from the period as authorities, with a chapter being devoted to discussing their value as historical sources. Detailed notes are incorporated throughout. Genealogical tables, maps and a bibliography are also included. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the Wars of the Roses and Welsh history.
The impact of malaria on humankind has been profound. Focusing on depictions of this iconic 'disease of empire' in nineteenth-century and postcolonial fiction, Jessica Howell shows that authors such as Charles Dickens, Henry James, H. Rider Haggard, Olive Schreiner and Rudyard Kipling did not simply adopt the discourses of malarial containment and cure offered by colonial medicine. Instead, these authors adapted and rewrote some common associations with malarial images such as swamps, ruins, mosquitoes, blood, and fever. They also made use of the unique potential of fiction by incorporating chronic, cyclical illness, bodily transformation and adaptation within the very structures of their novels. Howell's study also examines the postcolonial literature of Amitav Ghosh and Derek Walcott, arguing that these authors use the multivalent and subversive potential of malaria in order to rewrite the legacies of colonial medicine.
