Ian Cheng: Forking at Perfection
The work of New York-based artist Ian Cheng (born 1984) explores the nature of mutation and the capacity of humans to relate to change. Drawing on video game design, improvisation and themes of Darwinian brutality, Cheng has developed so-called "live simulations," living virtual ecosystems that begin with basic programmed properties, but are left to self-evolve without authorial control or end. Cheng's simulations often model the dynamics of fictional or imagined organisms and ecologies, but they do so with the unforgiving causality found in nature itself. Cheng describes his simulations as akin to a "neurological gym" a format for viewers to deliberately exercise the feelings of confusion, anxiety and cognitive dissonance that accompany the experience of unrelenting change. This monograph explores Cheng's most recent "live simulations," with contributions from Raphael Gygax and Franziska Bigger, along with a selection of texts by the artist.
Ian McEwan's Short Story "First Love, Last Rites" as a Story of Initiation and Adolescence
Essay from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Trier (Anglistik), course: British Short Stories, language: English, abstract: "A young boy, determined to cleanse himself of the embarrassing stigma of his virginity, seduces and beds his 10-year-old sister. A husband, who treasures a nineteenth-century criminal's penis in a jar, "disappears" his wife into a surfaceless plane. A man revenges himself by pouring a pan of boiling oil into the lap of an antagonizing co-worker. An Aunt forces her nephew to don dress and blonde wig before coming down to dinner. Welcome to the world of Ian McEwan" (Slay 9). Ian Russell McEwan was born on the 21st of June in 1948 in Aldershot, England, as the only son of David and Rose McEwan. He spent most his childhood in military outposts such as Singapore and Libya because his father was a soldier of the British army. After having attended a boarding school in Suffolk, he enters the University of Sussex in 1966 where he began writing fiction and also achieved his BA degree in English literature in 1970. One year later he obtained his MA degree at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. In 1975 he published his first short story collection, First Love, Last Rites, which was his Master thesis in the subject 'creative writing'. The shocking stories that are arranged in First Love, Last Rites brought him immediate critical compliments and he won the Somerset Maugham Award for their intelligent skills and originality. Most of these stories deal with abnormal sexuality, disorganized family life or claustrophobic tales. In his Short Stories, McEwan wrote at the beginning of his career, the protagonists are mostly children or young persons who tell the stories as first person narrators. Wolfgang G. M ller says in his interpretation of the Short story First Love, Last Rites that "the attention is drawn to the developmental stage of adolescence with its psychological problems

Disturbed Home is the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s architectural interventions, including photographic and filmic interpretations of those structural works. Highlighting projects of the past twelve years and spanning geographies from Strange’s native Australia, to New Zealand, Japan, Poland, and the United States, Strange’s provocative transformations of damaged or abandoned homes unlock themes of social upheaval and geographic displacement caused by a variety of factors—economic blight, environmental disaster, and social migrations. Published on the occasion of exhibitions at the 2020 Perth Festival and the 2022 FotoFocus Biennial, Disturbed Home features lucid commentary and original imagery on numerous distinct projects. Also included are scholarly essays by FotoFocus artistic director and curator Kevin Moore and Britt Salvesen, curator and head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department and the Prints and Drawings Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Essays address Strange’s practice within traditions of street art, photography, film, public sculpture, and dance performance.

Ian Fleming's War

Ian Fleming's War

In 1953 Ian Fleming's literary sensation James Bond emerged onto the world's stage. Nearly seven decades later he has become a multi-billion-dollar film franchise, now equipped with all the gizmos of the modern world. Yet Fleming's creation that battled his way through the fourteen Bond novels, from 1953-1966, was a maverick, a man out of place. Bond even admits it, wishing he was back in the real war...the Second World War. Indeed, the thread of the Second World War runs through all the Bond books, and many were inspired by the real events and people Ian Fleming came across during his time in Naval Intelligence. In Fleming's 007, Mark Simmons explores these remarkable similarities. For example, Thunderball has a clear link to Operation Ruthless, Fleming's scheme to capture a German naval code book desperately wanted by the boffins at Bletchley Park. Also, the exploits of 30 Assault Unit, the commando team he helped to create, provided the inspiration for Moonraker. Both of these examples and many more are explored in this unique book.
