Biography: Neusner is a social commentator, a post-Holocaust theologian, and an outspoken political figure. Jacob Neusner (born 1932) is one of the most important figures in the shaping of modern American Judaism. He was pivotal in transforming the study of Judaism from an insular project only conducted by—and of interest to—religious adherents to one which now flourishes in the secular setting of the university. He is also one of the most colorful, creative, and difficult figures in the American academy. But even those who disagree with Neusner's academic approach to ancient rabbinic texts have to engage with his pioneering methods. In this comprehensive biography, Aaron Hughes shows Neusner to be much more than a scholar of rabbinics. He is a social commentator, a post-Holocaust theologian, and was an outspoken political figure during the height of the cultural wars of the 1980s. Neusner's life reflects the story of what happened as Jews migrated to the suburbs in the late 1940s, daring to imagine new lives for themselves as they successfully integrated into the fabric of American society. It is also the story of how American Jews tried to make sense of the world in the aftermath of the extermination of European Jewry and the subsequent creation of the State of Israel in 1948, and how they sought to define what it meant to be an American Jew. Unlike other great American Jewish thinkers, Neusner was born in the U.S., and his Judaism was informed by an American ethos. His Judaism is open, informed by and informing the world. It is an American Judaism, one that has enabled American Jews—the freest in history—to be fully American and fully Jewish.

In 1965, in South Africa, an Afrikaner teen sets out in search of his father while a Zulu hunter returns home to his four-year old son. The encounter between the fathers scars the sons in different ways and incites an act of revenge that will haunt them both forever. In 1993, in Banner, Texas, three men die in a seemingly unrelated robbery. In 1996, Banner is visited by an extraordinary man from South Africa seeking the truth behind a nightmare that has haunted him since child-hood. His quest disrupts the placid lives of Professor Cholly Bracker and wife, Kate, and draws them into a perilous intrigue. When they discover a link between the visitor's quest and the death of Cholly's brother--one of those who died in 1993--their interest becomes deeply personal. Given reason to suspect Banner's most influential citizen in a decades-old conspiracy that has already claimed more than twenty lives, they discover that pursuing the truth may have put their own lives in jeopardy. Seeking evidence to protect themselves, Cholly and Kate are forced to take dangerous risks and in doing so they learn there is much more to the conspiracy than a legacy of hate. Before they can act on their discoveries, the Brackers learn the "whole truth" is even more shocking than what they had come to believe.

Jacob Marley makes his ghostly debut in the famous A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Marley was such a horrible person that he was doomed to wander the earth for eternity, carrying heavy chains. In Jacob Marley's Ghost, author Michael Fridgen tells the story of a young Jacob Marley. It explores a host of questions: If Marley was as terrible as he appears, why does he warn Ebenezer Scrooge? Perhaps Marley wasn't always bad? Is there a reason he attempts to scare Scrooge into changing his ways? During the years before he met Scrooge, Marley grew up in London raised by an adoring father and a horrifying mother. When death comes close to his home, a chain of perilous events begins. Marley is sent away from London on a ship, sold into slavery, and forced to work for one of the most detested men in France. Because he's different, Marley is bullied and tortured. Although he makes some close friends, Marley is eventually forced into an impossible and deadly situation. To survive, he must choose what kind of person he wants to be. Jacob Marley's Ghost reveals the origins of A Christmas Carol's unforgettable characters while showing who should be praised and who should be boiled in their own pudding.

In this stimulating read the author provides a deep Biblical revelation for the believer to take a step-by-step guide for spiritual growth and maturity. By presenting the width, length, depth and height of the Word of God, he outlines spiritual principles that when embraced will help the believer grow in the light of God's Word. By using Jacob's twelve sons-each representing a rung on Jacob's ladder-the author perpetuates the significance and etymology of their names as a base to cultivate spiritual growth and development. Furthermore, by developing upon a theological rendition of each name, the book provides a powerful call for the Christian to realise the importance of their dedication to Christ, the blessings of obedience, the role of praise and worship, and much more. Jacob's ladder encourages people to foster a closer walk with the true and living God!

This book will help you detect where the rhythm of your life is being disrupted by events and circumstances that must be recognized and counteracted. You will learn how to honor the seasons of your life that dictate when and where to build a ladder and when to begin climbing. Jacob's Ladder - Climbing it on God's terms will help you discover the difference between choosing to call on God to help you navigate your way out of a bad situation and recognizing God as the tour guide of your life in all situations.
