Joe Wilder was a man for all seasons, an individual who will forever be an inveterate achiever, a man who has made this a better world by setting a high standard for others to follow. The New York Times hailed him as a "Renaissance Man." In this autobiography he encapsulated a half century as a committed doctor highlighting the powerful forces and actions which take place in a major hospital setting. This book combines the compassion of this exceptional and surgeon and his forceful paintings from inside the operating room to paintings of sports and still life paintings representing the beauty of nature. He brings to bear skills perfected as a surgeon, acute powers of observation, knowledge of anatomy, concentration and a delft bold hand. Joe was a "healer" every minute of his life and that is how he wanted to be remembered. He never refused help to anyone regardless of their ability to pay. He saved thousands of lives in the operating room and taught his skills to the thousands of surgeons he trained during his thirty five years as a Chief and Professor of Surgery. He said that he owed much of his success in life to his parents and to his education at Dartmouth where he became an All- American Lacrosse player establishing records that have never been broken. Joe was the all-time highest goal scorer per game against all opponents and in 1987 was inducted into The Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He was awarded many honors in his lifetime including the Markle Award, The Dartmouth College Presidential Medal for Leadership in Art and Science; he was honored as "Man of The Year" at The Yankee Stadium in New York along with Willie Mays and was elected to membership in the Dartmouth College Phi Beta Kappa. Joe Wilder understood what Hippocrates meant when he wrote "Wherever the art of medicine is loved there is also the love of humanity". This ethical statement is in effect the motto that explains the motivation of his surgeon paintings and this autobiography.

A new cookbook/survival guide/love letter to Montreal for these apocalyptic times, from the James Beard Award-nominated culinary adventurists and proprietors of the beloved restaurant, Joe Beef. "The first Joe Beef cookbook changed forever what a cookbook could be. Anything that came after had to take it into account. Now, with this latest and even more magnificent beast, the rogue princes of Canadian cuisine and hospitality show us the way out of the numbing, post-apocalyptic restaurant Hell of pretentiousness and mediocrity that threatens to engulf us all. It makes us believe that the future is shiny, bright, beautiful, delicious--and probably Qu b cois. This book will change your life." --Anthony Bourdain It's the end of the world as we know it. Or not. Either way, you want Joe Beef: Surviving the Apocalypse in your bunker and/or kitchen. In their much-loved first cookbook, Fr d ric Morin, David McMillan, and Meredith Erickson introduced readers to the art of living the Joe Beef way. Now, they're back with another deeply personal, refreshingly unpretentious collection of more than 150 new recipes, some taken directly from the menus of Fred and Dave's acclaimed Montreal restaurants, others from summers spent on Laurentian lakes and Sunday dinners at home. Think Watercress Soup with Trout Quenelles, Artichokes Bravas, and seasonal variations on Pot-au-Feu--alongside Smoked Meat Croquettes, a Tater Tot Galette, and Squash Sticky Buns. Also included are instructions for making your own soap and cough drops, not to mention an epic 16-page fold-out gatefold with recipes and guidance for stocking a cellar with apocalyptic essentials (Canned Bread, Pickled Pork Butt, and Smoked Apple Cider Vinegar) for throwing the most sought-after in-bunker dinner party Filled with recipes, reflections, and ramblings, in this book you'll find chapters devoted to the Qu b cois tradition of celebrating Christmas in July, the magic of public television, and Fred and Dave's unique take on barbecue (Burnt-End Bourguignon, Cassoulet Rapide), as well as ruminations on natural wine and gluten-free cooking, and advice on how children should behave at dinner. Whether you're holing up for a zombie holocaust or just cooking at home, Joe Beef is a book about doing it yourself, about making it on your own, and about living--or at least surviving--in style.

A concise, brilliant and incisive examination of Democratic nominee Joe Biden and his lifelong quest for the presidency by National Book Award winner Evan Osnos 'It is impossible to come away from Osnos's biography without a sense of awe at what Biden has overcome' Guardian 'Beautifully written' Financial Times 'A good primer on the man who could soon be president . . . Eloquent and well-informed' Sunday Times 'Ably takes the measure of the man and the politician' Washington Post Former vice president Joseph R. Biden Jr. has been called both the luckiest man and the unluckiest fortunate to have sustained a fifty-year political career that reached the White House, but also marked by deep personal losses that he has suffered. Yet even as Biden s life has been shaped by drama, it has also been powered by a willingness, rare at the top ranks of politics, to confront his shortcomings, errors and reversals of fortune. His trials have forged in him a deep empathy for others in hardship an essential quality as he addresses a nation at its most dire hour in decades. Blending up-close journalism and broader context, Evan Osnos illuminates Biden s life and captures the characters and meaning of an extraordinary presidential election. He draws on lengthy interviews with Biden and on revealing conversations with more than a hundred others, including President Barack Obama, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg, and a range of progressive activists, advisers, opponents, and Biden family members. In this nuanced portrait, Biden emerges as flawed, yet resolute, and tempered by the flame of tragedy a man who just may be uncannily suited for his moment in history.
