"The only way for you to win/ Is after achieving discipline," Witch Lydia said. On All Hallows' Eve, Lydia Thorne casts a curse meant to fulfill her bullies' wishes. Asher would rather lose his scholarship than makeout with her. Karter would only kiss her if he switched bodies with his best friend. And Kasey was willing to live in poverty rather than befriend her. Well, Lydia thought, your wishes are my command. Using three black candles-one for each of them-Lydia performs a s ance meant to give Kasey, Karter, and Asher two weeks to discipline their behavior. After all, they used to be friends, before choosing a different crowd. Will Kasey achieve discipline or restrict herself to poverty? Will Asher and Karter humble their cocky personas or allow their egos to ruin their future? Will Lydia Thorne be able to forgive them, if they asked for forgiveness? As the candles continue to melt, Lydia begins to wonder who's really being punished. Can vengeance teach kindness? Or will her own heart harden before the spell is complete? Lydia Thorne's Revenge is an emotional story of justice, change, and the dangers that can come from holding on to pain.

Faber Stories, a landmark series of individual volumes, presents masters of the short story form at work in a range of genres and styles. 'I have quite changed my mind. I am going to run away and become a boy.'In these three stories, written by Djuna Barnes under the pseudonym Lydia Steptoe, three characters find themselves on the brink of a sexual awakening - accompanied by guns, whips, and worldly innuendo.A fourteen-year-old girl plans to become 'a virago', until her mother intercepts her first tryst by dressing up as her male lover. A boy of the same age is lured into the forest by his father's mistress. A woman of forty falls in love and longs to kill herself, so unbearable is the return of the youth she thought she wanted. 'Alice', she tells herself, 'be a man.'Barnes makes gender and desire seem slippery and joyful - and makes the fictional Lydia Steptoe seem like a writer for our time.Bringing together past, present and future in our ninetieth year, Faber Stories is a celebratory compendium of collectable work.

From the 1820s to the 1870s, Lydia Maria Child was as familiar to the American public as her Thanksgiving song, "Over the river and through the wood, / To grandfather’s house we go," remains today. Hardly a sphere of nineteenth-century life can be found in which Child did not figure prominently as a pathbreaker. She crusaded against slavery and racism, combated religious bigotry, championed women’s rights, publicized the plight of the urban poor, and campaigned for justice toward Native Americans. Showing an uncanny ability to pinpoint and respond to new cultural needs, Child pioneered almost every category of nineteenth-century American letters-historical fiction, the short story, children’s literature, the domestic advice book, women’s history, antislavery fiction, journalism, and the literature of aging. This rich collection is the first to represent the full range of Child’s contributions as a literary innovator, social reformer, and progressive thinker over a career spanning six decades. It features stories, editorials, articles, and letters to politicians culled from rare newspapers and periodicals and never before published in book form; extracts from her trailblazing childrearing manual, history of women, and primer for the emancipated slaves; and a generous sampling of her best-known writings on slavery, the Indian question, poverty, and women’s rights. Witty, incisive, and often daringly unconventional, Child’s writings open a panoramic window on nineteenth-century American culture while addressing issues still relevant to our own time. In this anthology, the editor of Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl reemerges in her own right as one of the nation’s greatest prophets.
