There is a hidden country within the United States. It was formed from the astonishing number of secrets held by the government and the growing ranks of secret-keepers given charge over them. The government secrecy industry speaks in a private language of codes and acronyms, and follows an arcane set of rules and customs designed to perpetuate itself, repel penetration, and deflect oversight. It justifies itself with the assertion that the American values worth preserving are often best sustained by subterfuge and deception. There are indications that this deep state is crumbling. Necessary secrets are often impossible to keep, while frivolous secrets are kept forever. The entire system has fallen prey to political manipulation, with leaks carefully timed to advance agendas, and over-classification given to indefensible government activities. Deep State, written by two of the country's most respected national security journalists, disassembles the secrecy apparatus of the United States and examines real-world trends that ought to trouble everyone from the most aggressive hawk to the fiercest civil libertarian. The book: - Provides the fullest account to date of the National Security Agency's controversial surveillance program first spun up in the dark days after 9/11. - Examines President Obama's attempt to reconcile his instincts as a liberal with the realities of executive power, and his use of the state secrets doctrine. - Exposes how the public's ubiquitous access to information has been the secrecy industry's toughest opponent to date, and provides a full account of how WikiLeaks and other "sunlight" organizations are changing the government's approach to handling sensitive information, for better and worse. - Explains how the increased exposure of secrets affects everything from Congressional budgets to Area 51, from SEAL Team Six and Delta Force to the FBI, CIA, and NSA. - Assesses whether the formal and informal mechanisms put in place to protect citizens from abuses by the American deep state work, and how they might be reformed. Deep State is based on the authors' insatiable curiosity for the ground truth and layered on a foundation of original and historical research as well as unprecedented access to lawmakers, intelligence agency heads, White House officials, and secret program managers. It draws on thousands of recently declassified documents and candid interviews with more than 100 military, industry, and government officials. By the bestselling authors of The Command: Deep Inside the President's Secret Army Marc Ambinder, editor at large at The Week, contributing editor at GQ and the Atlantic, who has covered Washington for CBS News and ABC News; and D.B. Grady, a correspondent for the Atlantic, national security columnist for The Week, and former U.S. Army paratrooper and Afghanistan veteran.
Intellectual Disability and the Death Penalty

Written by two nationally recognized experts, this book provides a comprehensive review of the legal and clinical aspects of the death penalty as it relates to intellectual disability. First, the facts: people with intellectual disability may falsely confess to a crime because they want to please the authorities, and they are often less able than others to work with lawyers to prepare a defense. In addition, because of the stigma attached to intellectual disability, affected individuals often become adept at hiding it, even from their attorney, not understanding the condition's importance to the outcome of their case.Having explained such harsh realities and presented a comprehensive review of what intellectual disability is, the book focuses on the 2002 U.S. Supreme Court Atkins v. Virginia decision granting a death penalty exemption to individuals with intellectual disability. It outlines best practice regarding the determination of intellectual disability and discusses qualifications needed for experts in such cases. Related issues such as common misconceptions regarding people with intellectual disability, race, socioeconomic status, and the status of foreign nationals as it relates to the death penalty and intellectual disability are discussed as well. A must-have resource for prosecutors, defense lawyers, and clinicians providing expert testimony in death penalty cases, this book will also prove absorbing reading for anyone concerned about this troubling issue.
Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse

In adapting a new, clinically focused manual from their popular American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Substance Abuse Treatment, now in its fourth edition, Dr. Marc Galanter and Dr. Herbert Kleber intend Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse to be of practical application to both experienced clinicians and those new to the field substance abuse intervention. This manual: • Reviews the most common psychotherapeutic interventions for opiod-related and alcohol-related substance abuse disorders.• Features chapters authored by leading authorities on each intervention covered.• Gives valuable insight into the substance abuse disorders that affect over 20% of the U.S. population at some time in their lives.• Outlines diagnostic tools such as patient assessment, patient placement criteria, and how to test for and identify recent drug use. • Confirms that the most common interventions for virtually all substance abuse disorders are psychotherapy and behavioral approaches. Only one in ten patients with substance abuse disorders actually seek and receive treatment. The text is intended to address and overcome the shortage of substance abuse treatment providers and the inadequate training of many clinicians in the intervention techniques they will need in order to help these patients. Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse brings together chapters by experts in their respective treatment specialties, written in a consistent format and style for easy reference. Chapters include relevant case studies on the following topics: • Drs. Greenfield and Hennessey's chapter on assessing the patient combines key didactic points with the compassion and insights of two experienced therapists.• Dr. el-Guebaly lays out the cross-cultural aspects of addiction therapy and its increasing importance in our culturally diverse society. • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (Dr. Carroll), motivational therapy (Dr. Di Clemente), and contingency management (Dr. Higgins) are probably the three most studied behavioral interventions for substance abuse disorders, though not the most used. • The principles outlined by Drs. Frances, Mack, and Lightdale in covering psychodynamic psychotherapy can improve insights into and practice of other modalities. • Twelve-step facilitation (Dr. Ries) lays out how to improve the chance of successful referral to Alcoholic Anonymous as well as how to utilize its precepts in other settings.• Network Therapy, a specialty practiced by volume editor Marc Galanter, is a multimodal approach to rehabilitation that enlists the support of family members and friends to try to achieve prompt abstinence and ongoing relapse prevention. Multiple techniques discussed in this volume are brought to life in an accompanying DVD that reinforces the text by sharing reenacted segments of actual sessions of multimodal Network Therapy. This text is highly recommended for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, residents and fellows, and anyone interested in substance abuse treatment and prevention.
In the summer of 1921, young doctor Francis Ardan and his father are exploring the most remote regions of Upper Siam (now Thailand), when they encounter a dying man whose skin is the color of jade. His revelations lead the intrepid father-and-son team to discover the existence of Inramonda, a secret, underground realm ruled by an immortal tyrant known as His Eternal Wisdom, whose subjects are a race of artificially created "Jade Men." He plots to seize power in Southeast Asia. Scientist and world-saving explorer Doctor Ardan was created in 1928, five years before Doc Savage, by French author Guy d'Armen. The Fall of Inramonda, originally published in 1935, has been adapted by the award-winning team of Jean-Marc & Randy Lofficier. The book also includes a Doc Ardan novella by renowned Doctor Who author John Peel.

Authoritarianism and Polarization in American Politics
Marc J. Hetherington; Jonathan D. Weiler
Cambridge University Press
2009
pokkari
Although politics at the elite level has been polarized for some time, a scholarly controversy has raged over whether ordinary Americans are polarized. This book argues that they are and that the reason is growing polarization of worldviews - what guides people's view of right and wrong and good and evil. These differences in worldview are rooted in what Marc J. Hetherington and Jonathan D. Weiler describe as authoritarianism. They show that differences of opinion concerning the most provocative issues on the contemporary issue agenda - about race, gay marriage, illegal immigration, and the use of force to resolve security problems - reflect differences in individuals' levels of authoritarianism. Events and strategic political decisions have conspired to make all these considerations more salient. The authors demonstrate that the left and the right have coalesced around these opposing worldviews, which has provided politics with more incandescent hues than before.

Community, Crime Control, and Collective Efficacy

Collective efficacy is a neighborhood-level concept in which community members create a sense of agency and assume ownership for the state of their local community. This concept is one of several forms of formal and informal social control that predict the overall functioning of a community. In this book, the authors examine collective efficacy and crime in eight Miami-Dade County, Florida neighborhoods, based on data they collected from across the country and in the Miami-Dade neighborhoods themselves. They discuss findings relevant to the theory of collective efficacy itself, ramifications for its use within communities, and make recommendations for future research and for translating these results into actionable, crime prevention activities.

- Peter & Paul in ihrem Restaurant. English Version: This "hypothetical diary" from the everyday life of an inconspicuous person tells of the unpredictable in life, that is, of what always and everywhere happens inconspicuously, when we think we have conditions under control. It's about love and suffering, about fear and daring, about passion and friendship, about suspicion and betrayal - it's about what weight has in life and yet always tends to imbalance, because the blind girl Fortuna has appointed the titan Fortuity as a weighing master. A tale of the break-in of fortuity is always one about fate, destiny, doom, one about bliss and sorrow, i.e. about what is significant and important in life. When all conditions are in equilibrium, none of them has a real weight. Much and many play a role, whose text they have not written themselves: - A biochemist who in Berlin is surprised by the unforeseen. - A strange institute as a high-security wing. - A colleague called Doctor Mephisto. - An amusing "Salon of Awry Inconsistency" with a fascinating hostess. - An invitation to tea ... and more. - A passionate love affair between two bewitchers. - A triangular relationship with a problematic pact. - A writer hiding in double anonymity. - Mysterious managers and even more secret people from the "Service." - Peter & Paul in their restaurant. - Family birthdays and grandfatherly reflections. - A tearful and loving farewell - and many others in 48 chapters. Above all, however, it is the ancient story that is told anew in every life, the only story that never ends: How two seek and find each other, how two love and suffer, how two want to hold each other and have to separate. How no one becomes smarter than the wisdom of the species allows him, how the game starts from the beginning and ends again in the back. The story about which everything is known and said, but which is always unpredictable for the one who experiences it.
Curated by award-winning mystery author M.H. Norris. Lurking in your hometown and countless others, urban legends and folklore are all around us. To many, they exist solely as myth. But not for all. Then the police are called, or a detective, who must discover if there really is something in those stories... Featuring M.H. Norris' "Midnight," which debuts her new series. Dr. Rosella Tassoni, a Forensic Mythologist, is hired by the FBI to consult on a case where seeming old world folklore is cross-contaminated by internet fauxlore. High school students are being murdered. Will the experience break her? A detective who wishes to write his own mysteries, but can't bring his words to life, is now trapped in a "Locked Room" mystery by Marc Sorondo. Is the killer a ghost, or a clever human? How can he see a painting which no-one else can see? James Bojaciuk answers this question in "Doppelgangers (and Other Artistic Piffle)." A mournful soul on a lonely highway, calling for death, is the center of a murder case in D.J. Tyrer's "Tuttle and Gretel." What is the Vanishing Hitchhiker?
