Ethics and the Pharmaceutical Industry

Ethics and the Pharmaceutical Industry

Michael A. Santoro; Thomas M. Gorrie

Cambridge University Press
2005
sidottu
Despite the pharmaceutical industry's notable contributions to human progress, including the development of miracle drugs for treating cancer, AIDS, and heart disease, there is a growing tension between the industry and the public. Government officials and social critics have questioned whether the multibillion-dollar industry is fulfilling its social responsibilities. This doubt has been fueled by the national debate over drug pricing and affordable healthcare, and internationally by the battles against epidemic diseases, such as AIDS, in the developing world. Debates are raging over how the industry can and should be expected to act. The contributions in this book by leading figures in industry, government, NGOs, the medical community, and academia discuss and propose solutions to the ethical dilemmas of drug industry behavior. They examine such aspects as the role of intellectual property rights and patent protection, the moral and economic requisites of research and clinical trials, drug pricing, and marketing.
Changing Japanese Capitalism

Changing Japanese Capitalism

Michael A. Witt

Economic crisis tends to spur change in the 'rules of the game' - the 'institutions' - that govern the economic activity of firms and employees. But after more than a decade of economic pain following the burst of the Japanese Bubble Economy of the 1980s, the core institutions of Japanese capitalism have changed little. In this systematic and holistic assessment of continuity and change in the central components of Japanese capitalism, Michael A. Witt links this slow institutional change to a confluence of two factors: high levels of societal co-ordination in the Japanese political economy, and low levels of deviant behaviour at the level of individuals, firms, and organizations. He identifies social networks permeating Japanese business as a key enabler of societal co-ordination and an obstacle to deviancy, and sheds light on a pervasive but previously under-explored type of business networks, intra-industry loops. Includes a foreword by Gordon Redding.

How does IP balance the exclusive rights of innovators with public demand for access to their innovations? How can organizations manage IP strategically to meet their goals? How do IP strategies play out on the global stage? Driving Innovation reveals the dynamics of intellectual property (IP) as it drives the innovation cycle and shapes global society. The book presents fundamental IP concepts and practical legal and business strategies that apply to all innovation communities, including industry, non-profit institutions, and developing countries. Further, it draws on the author's broad experience, news headlines, and precedent-setting lawsuits relating to patents, trademarks, copyright, and trade secrets - from biotechnology to the open source movement. General readers and students will welcome the lively overview of this complex topic, while executives and practitioners can gain new insights and valuable approaches for putting ideas to work and navigating within or changing the global IP system to expand innovation.

"Mine" is one of the first words babies learn, and by the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether we are buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you, reclining, or the squished laptop user behind you? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it's okay to knock off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, while in New York you lose both the space and the chair? In Mine , Michael Heller and James Salzman, two of the world's leading authorities on ownership, explain these puzzles and many more. Remarkably, they reveal, there are just six simple rules that everyone uses to claim everything. Owners choose the rule that steers us to do what they want. But we can pick differently. This is true not just for airplane seats, but also for battles over digital privacy, climate change, and wealth inequality. Mine draws on mind-bending, often infuriating, and always fascinating accounts from business, history, courtrooms, and everyday life to reveal how the rules of ownership control our lives and shape our world.

This work examines text-referencing practices and ideas about sacred texts in antiquity. This book shows how Ezekiel, an ancient Israelite author, borrowed from and transformed an earlier text containing religious instruction. Ezekiel used this earlier text (Lev 17-26, the "Holiness Code") in order to explain the sixth-century destruction of his city and the exile of its inhabitants, and to create hope for the exilic community of which he was a part. It was precisely because he regarded this text as authoritative and paradigmatic for his own day that he borrowed its words and phrases and transformed them for inclusion in his own work. The techniques behind these transformations include syntactic modification, inversion of word order, creation of word pairs, split-up and recombination of locutions, creation of word clusters, conflation, wordplay, and reversals.By transforming the Holiness Code's legal instructions and covenant rhetoric into accusations and descriptions of imminent or recent punishment, Ezekiel could explain the tragedy by creating a causal connection between the people's behavior and the disaster they experienced. By selectively and paradigmatically using the Holiness Code's covenant blessings, Ezekiel envisioned a future characterized by physical and spiritual restoration. Ezekiel transformed law into prophecy in his attempt to meet the needs of his community.

An introduction to the study of Ezekiel that lays out for the reader the central issues for the interpretation of the book of Ezekiel. After explaining how the message of the prophet was relevant to the exilic situation in which he lived, this thorough guide shows how later generations shaped, transmitted, and used Ezekiel in their own communities. The book summarizes the literary shape and contents of Ezekiel, then examines the theories and methodologies used in current scholarship that explain the formation of Ezekiel. Lyons next explains for the reader the theology and major themes of Ezekiel, and closes by evaluating how the arguments of Ezekiel relate to each other as a coherent rhetorical strategy.

Michael A. Daise identifies literary features found in six quotations in the Fourth Gospel, suggesting they should be revisited as clusters rather than as discrete units. Three quotations are the only ones whose introductory formulae explicitly ascribe them to Isaiah; three are the only ones cast as being ‘remembered’ by Jesus’ disciples; and each of these groupings forms an inclusio within the Book of Signs which, when combined with the other, produces a chiasmus to Jesus’ public ministry. Daise examines these clusters in three studies, addressing their exegetical issues and theological implications. After an introductory apologia for an historical-critical and theological approach, the first two studies distil narrative themes embedded in the Isaianic and ‘remembrance’ inclusios. The third study then reconstructs the synthesis of these themes created by the chiasmus, and translates its key elements into theological categories. Daise concludes that, while the Isaianic inclusio brings ‘closure’ to the Book of Signs —by disclosing the angelic cause of the Jews’ unbelief — the ‘remembrance’ inclusio creates an anticipation of the Book of Glory — by casting Jesus as poised to establish a new dynasty with the casting out that angelic cause. Daise further argues that this broader storyline carries ramifications for an array of motifs in the Fourth Gospel’s theological taxonomy: in particular its christology, soteriology, eschatology, ecclesiology and pneumatology.

Spain in 1939 is in turmoil after the bloody and divisive Spanish Civil War. Spain is being led by General Francisco Franco who successfully led a coup against the moderate Spanish government and now rules the country as a ruthless dictator backed by the strength of the military. While a majority of the Spanish citizens are opposed to the war, they live in fear of being viewed as traitors and facing a cruel death at the hands of Franco. Antonio Garcia and his best friend, Pedro Lopez, are beginning their first year of studies at the University of Barcelona and are strongly opposed to the war and Franco. Antonio's new girlfriend, Maria, is an anti-Franco activist and encourages Antonio to join her in the protests. Antonio comes from a military family and cannot publicly participate, though he supports them quietly. The Spanish government institutes a mandatory military draft and, to their horror, both Antonio and Pedro are assigned to work on the administrative detail of Franco. Over time, Franco takes a liking to Antonio and appreciates his intellect and common sense. Similarly, Antonio begins to see the "human" side of Franco and becomes his prot g . Franco rapidly promotes Antonio into a troop leadership position and strategic advisor. After returning from a successful military campaign, Antonio is surprised to see that both Pedro and Maria want nothing to do with him. Antonio reflects on how he has changed and on what he has become. He wonders whether his success has been worth the sacrifice of losing the love and support of the people closest to him. Antonio reunites with Maria and pledges to actively support the anti-Franco movement despite the obvious risks to his life. His traitorous actions climax in an emotional showdown with Franco where their diverging values and loyalties are put to the ultimate test.

This excellent survey looks at the workings of parliament under the first four Tudor monarchs. After an introductory first section which looks at parliament's medieval origins, the author then considers all aspects of early parliamentary history - including the historiography of the early Tudor parliaments, membership and attendance, the legislative roles if the Lords anbd Commons and the specific parliaments themselves.
