Women and Modesty in Late Antiquity

Women and Modesty in Late Antiquity

Kate Wilkinson

Cambridge University Press
2015
sidottu
This book offers a fresh approach to some of the most studied documents relating to Christian female asceticism in the Roman era. Focusing on the letters of advice to the women of the noble Anicia family, Kate Wilkinson argues that conventional descriptions of feminine modesty can reveal spaces of agency and self-formation in early Christian women's lives. She uses comparative data from contemporary ethnographic studies of Muslim, Hindu, and indigenous Pakistani women to draw out the possibilities inherent in codes of modesty. Her analysis also draws on performance studies for close readings of Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome and Pelagius. The book begins by locating itself within the complex terrain of feminist historiography, and then addresses three main modes of modest behavior - dress, domesticity and silence. Finally, it addresses the theme of false modesty and explores women's agency in light of Augustinian and Pelagian conceptions of choice.

A Seasonable and Modest Apology in Behalf of the Reverend Dr. George Hickes, and Other Non-Jurors
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. The Innocent and Modest Vibiana prayer book invites you to grow in devotion to the hidden patron saint of Los Angeles: St. Vibiana. Saint Vibiana was a virgin martyr who lived and died in third-century Rome. She lived in a time of great persecution, when the strong preyed on the weak, and when many young Christian women were put to death for rejecting the depravity of pagan culture. We can be certain of little about Saint Vibiana's life, except that it ended with her entrance into Heaven, and this is the most important thing to know about any life. After her martyrdom, early Christians gathered at her tomb to pray and to remember her great purity. Over time, however, she was forgotten. In 1853, her tomb was rediscovered, and her bones were presented to Blessed Pope Pius IX. The Holy Father entrusted these relics to Thaddeus Amat, the soon-to-be Bishop of Los Angeles. When Bishop Amat arrived in Los Angeles, the city was a violent frontier settlement, only recently conquered by the United States. Amat entrusted the city to Saint Vibiana's patronage, and built a cathedral dedicated to her. Her relics were placed at the main altar. From her position at the heart of the Cathedral, Saint Vibiana watched over generations of Angelenos who came to the Cathedral for baptisms, marriages, funerals, and countless Masses. Her feast day, September 1st, was observed with great reverence and devotion. Today her bones rest in the crypt of Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral, but her soul stands before God, interceding for Los Angeles, and for all those who call upon her name.
