Secret Rites and Secret Writing

Secret Rites and Secret Writing

Lois Potter

Cambridge University Press
2009

This book is a study of the various kinds of royalist writing during the period of the English Civil War and the Interregnum, when printing and publishing were largely controlled by Parliament. Lois Potter examines the effectiveness of this control and the means by which writers evaded it: illicit publication; the use of various kinds of code, such as ciphers, emblems, secret languages, symbolism and allegory; the exploitation of genres such as romance and tragicomedy; the submerging of personal identity through literary quotation and allusion. By looking at a very wide sample of texts ranging from anonymous pamphlets to the works of well-known 'Cavalier poets', the book brings greater precision to the controversial subject of the relation of literature to politics and the relation of both to the psychology of secrecy.

Although considerable attention has been paid to those cultural revolutions which result in fundamental social upheavals, the less spectacular silent cultural revolutions which leave the existing social structure intact, focusing instead on the behavioural dimension of ideology, have been neglected. In this book, which was originally published in 1981, Christel Lane examines such a silent revolution, exploring the ways in which it was achieved in the Soviet society of the time through the instrument of ritual. Dr Lane argues that ritual in the Soviet Union serves as a means of rendering sacred the existing social and political order; and her comparison of Soviet ritual with the rituals of other societies highlights the way in which ritual mirrors both the problematic social relations of society and political leaders' major concerns. This book will interest sociologists of religion, anthropologists, political sociologists, and Soviet studies.

The last thing the wizard Drum Billet did, before Death laid a bony hand on his shoulder, was to pass on his staff of power to the eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately for his colleagues in the chauvinistic (not to say misogynistic) world of magic, he failed to check on the new-born baby's sex...

Jean Genet

Jean Genet, French playwright, novelist and poet, turned the experiences in his life amongst pimps, whores, thugs and other fellow social outcasts into a poetic literature, with an honesty and explicitness unprecedented at the time. Widely considered an outstanding and unique figure in French literature, Genet wrote five novels between 1942 and 1947, now being republished by Faber & Faber in beautiful new paperback editions.Jean Genet began to write his third novel in 1943, but it was to be changed utterly by the death of Jean Decarnin. Genet's sensual and brutal portrait of the Second World War unfolds between the poles of his grief for his lover Jean, killed in the Resistance during the liberation of Paris, and his perverse attraction to the collaborator Riton. Powerfully written, and with moments of great poetic subtlety, Funeral Rites is a dark meditation on the mirror images of love and hate, sex and death. Includes a new introduction by Neil Bartlett.

A daring invitation to discover and claim your identity and purpose, and to embrace the freedom to thrive right where you are Every woman wants wholeness--to be at home in her body, in her relationships, in her life. But women too often feel that they don't belong to themselves. The path to wholeness, to a woman belonging to herself, is formidable, and women know they can't travel it alone. Author, teacher, and therapist Dr. Christy Angelle Bauman has dedicated her life to guiding women on this path to meaning and profound joy. In Her Rites, Dr. Bauman takes you into her office and through six transformative exercises: a deep dive into the most common rites of passage in every woman's life, when she sometimes loses hold of herself but also has a unique opportunity to reclaim herself. - Birth: claiming how and why you came into the world- Initiation: coming of age- Exile: finding yourself- Creation: bringing something new into the world- Intuition: acquiring embodied wisdom that comes later in life- Legacy: living with emotional and spiritual readiness for one's own death These rites help women to find wholeness and self-knowledge. Included in Her Rites are ritual templates and exercises that Dr. Bauman employs with her clients, which will help any woman incorporate the principles of self-reclamation into her daily life. Dr. Bauman has seen again and again that by learning to pause and to reflect on these key moments, we can come home to ourselves and receive the gift of flourishing.

Chester Mudd had called Fable, Texas his home for nearly three decades when the old woman mysteriously showed up one morning, walking her dog. He'd become used to this predictable little town where everyone knew just about everyone else. But his next door neighbor didn't have the first notion who this newcomer was. Neither did his girlfriend. No one seemed to have any idea where this old woman came from or who she was. It was Chester Mudd's riddle. He watched her for one long week. She walked the dog every morning at precisely noon. She walked around the block exactly two times. Every day it took her exactly one half of an hour. This pattern never varied. Until now. Until today. Chester Mudd met the old woman outside on the sidewalk that passed by his front porch. "I am wondering why you are here?" Chester asked the old woman. "What else do you do when you've been dead for thirty years?" she replied. Dead. A ghost. Right here in Fable. Right here in his own home. "What is it like being dead?" The old woman grinned sadly, understanding more already about Fable in one week than Chester had figured out in years. "You tell me," she answered. "I just got here." Life is short. So are these thirteen tales. So read the Last Rites, and get on with the rest of your days.

One might suggest LAST RIGHTS was the swan song of a disgruntled police inspector who not only solved the most bizarre string of serial murders in 'Carter's Boys', but he broke every rule in the book in doing so. Despite a conciliatory promotion, Hammond was determined that Scotland Yard had not heard the last of him. When Superintendent Jack Hammond took early retirement- imagining a new life in the country would be an idyllic and peaceful one-he was not prepared for reality. He didn't take into account he would be left to the mercy of his wife Marjory, and indirectly, a bunch of the most eccentric characters you could ever wish upon anyone: Reverend Peter Jay, a scheming, evangelistic vicar; Janet Donald, a pariah of a headmistress obsessed with a gender fixation; Dick Meadows, the jolly grocer, who discovers he has unsettling psychic powers and Arthur Sandhurst, the charismatic real-estate agent. Last Rites is a bizarre crime-thriller preoccupied with past London memories, and has all the intriguing mystery of breaking codes and bizarre clues led by an astute, die-hard retired policeman, forced to work with a bunch of wanna-be amateur crime sleuths. Reverend Peter Jay is the nemesis-interested in solving old crimes and standing in as a prison Chaplain, where an inmates death-bed confession leads the group on a hunt, high and low to uncover an assassin hidden past and give his victims the dignity of the Last Rites.
