Detailed research into documentary sources offers an exciting new identification of the "real" Robin Hood. For over a century and a half scholars have debated whether or not the legend of Robin Hood was based on an actual outlaw and, if so, when and where he lived. One view is that he was not a legend as such but a myth: an idea, rather than a person who could possibly be identified in historical records and placed in a real historical and geographical context. Other writers have gone even further, arguing that he is a literary concoction, with no traceable original, and that seeking to pin him down to a particular time and location is futile and unnecessary. This survey begins by tracing the development of the legend, and contemporary views about it, between the thirteenth and early twenty-first centuries, taking account both of new interpretative literature on the subject and fresh discoveries from the author's own research in the early records of the English royal administration and common law. It then gives a detailed account of the places that came to be associated with the legend, and of evidence illustrating the importance of the outlaw's name in the development of English surnames. The concluding chapters deal with the administration of criminal law in medieval England, and the evidence that points to the possible origins of the legend in the activities of a notorious Yorkshire criminal, tracked down and beheaded in the county in 1225.
A vast darkness is spreading. If left unchecked, it will engulf the world, and so Richard the Lionheart must depart England on a holy mission. In his absence, the safety of the realm is entrusted to his brother, Prince John. When the king departs, black sorcery begins to grip the land, threatening noble and peasant alike. Horrific creatures stalk the forests, yet the violence they commit pales when compared to the atrocities of men. A handful of rebels fight back, but are doomed to fail unless they can find a hero to lead them.
Evil is everywhere. Through terror and dark sorcery, Prince John wields the power of the throne. Lord and peasant alike meet violent ends as the Sheriff's arcane beasts spread fear and death.A small group of rebels oppose John, striking from Sherwood Forest...the one place his creatures cannot pursue them. Though their numbers grow, so do the forces of darkness. Unless Robin and Marian fulfill the ancient prophecy of the Two Torcs, the forest will be overrun, and England will fall.
These are dark days for England. The Hood is dead. The Sheriff has summoned an ally-one who leads an army sufficient to enter Sherwood and crush the resistance. Then comes news that King Richard is the prisoner of a pagan ruler. What began as a rebellion has become a war for the throne. With hordes of demons and men at his disposal, the Sheriff is poised to seize power. A desperate mission is mounted to rescue Richard, while those who remain behind must hold off the enemy. Yet even if the true king returns, an epic battle will erupt, and the outcome cannot be foretold.

With his twinkling eyes, boundless energy and unrivalled natural wit, Robin Williams was the comedian who brought laughter to a generation. Through roles in cherished films such as Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, Aladdin and Hook, he became the genial face of family comedy. His child-like enthusiasm was infectious, sweeping viewers away. Allied to his lightning-quick improvisation and ability to riff lewdly off any cue thrown at him, Robin was that rare thing - a true comic genius who appealed to adults and children equally. He could also play it straight, and empathetic depth came to him naturally. A poignant performance in Good Will Hunting won him an Academy Award whilst his masterfully chilling turn in psychological thriller Insomnia shocked audiences and hinted at a darker side. What truly caught the imagination, though, was his good-heartedness. Warmth radiated from him on-screen, but he was legendary for his off-screen acts of selfless generosity. Where most Hollywood A-listers demand outrageous pampering in their contract riders, he always insisted that the production company hire a full quota of homeless people to help make his movies. But behind the laughter lay a deeply troubled man, and tragedy would follow. At midday, on 11 August 2014, Robin Williams was pronounced dead at his California home. The verdict was suicide. He had battled depression and addiction for many years and was allegedly beset by financial difficulties. Emily Herbert's sensitive and thoughtful biography celebrates his genius and warmth, but also attempts to understand what could have driven such a gentle and gifted man to so tragic an end. This is Robin Williams, the life, the laughter, and the deep sorrow of the man who made the world smile.
Rob has a grand residence; it overlooks the sea at Redgrove Port. He is always entertaining guests and hosting elaborate get-togethers. He has done well for himself. But suddenly he is brought back down to earth. The source of his success vanishes into thin air. Will Rob be in the skies for Christmas or remain firmly on the ground?
‘Tell everyone in Nottingham that the Outlaws rule here in Sherwood, that we rule in the king’s name ... I am Robin Hood.’ After a fierce storm, a boy of today discovers an arrowhead and a human skull, buried beneath the roots of an ancient oak tree. A skull with a legendary past: the heroic story of Robin Hood... Lost in a dark, strange forest, his father captured and his mother murdered, young Robin is rescued by a motley crew of misfits – the Outcasts. Among them he finds Marion, his most constant friend and the love of his life. And as the courageous band of warriors grows ever stronger – joined by the jovial Friar Tuck and the mighty Little John – Robin seeks to unite them all in a common aim: to bring relief and justice to the poor and to punish the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. In this magical, spine-tingling account, the heroic tale of Robin Hood is retold as never before by master storyteller Michael Morpurgo. In collaboration with the celebrated illustrator Michael Foreman, whose art soars from the page, this retelling of the classic story combines contemporary relevance with dramatic excitement from beginning to end.

'Superb ... reveals the real history behind the myths' Saul DavidThe legend of Robin Hood has gripped the popular imagination ever since his exploits were first told in the Middle Ages. Whether as thief, hero or violent bringer of justice, Robin Hood continues to assert himself over the centuries, still featuring heavily in mainstream culture in the 21st century. But what is the truth behind the legend? Historians and folklorists have been exploring the Robin Hood story for centuries, attempting to separate fact and myth. In this new book, Dr Sean McGlynn, a leading medievalist, offers a radically fresh approach, based on original research that has received global media attention. The author examines the first stories of Robin Hood as they appeared in the late Middle Ages and explains their appeal to contemporary audiences, against a background of violent disorder and troubled times. But a clearer understanding requires delving further back into the earlier medieval period to consider more fully the problems of name, time and place (and the questionable dominance of Sherwood Forest).Crime, brutal punishment, and the dramatic exploits of English medieval outlaws are discussed in vivid detail before the author assesses real-life figures who have been suggested as the inspiration behind the Robin Hood story and why these fail to hit the mark. The book then reveals a contender who has previously been completely overlooked but who is the most likely inspiration for the emergence of the Robin Hood legend in thirteenth-century England.By focusing on war in a time of national crisis, when a forgotten French invasion occupiedhalf of the country, this book reveals a true-life hero and legend who has previously been lost to history, a soldier who resolves the hero-outlaw paradox and who fits perfectly into the timing of the legend's origins. And yes - he really was a bowman living in the forest.Dr Sean McGlynn is the author of three critically acclaimed books: By Sword and Fire: Cruelty and Atrocity in Medieval Warfare; Blood Cries Afar: The Forgotten Invasion of England, 1216; and Kill Them All: Cathars and Carnage in the Albigensian Crusade. He is a regular contributor to BBC History, History Today and The Spectator. His research has previously received global media attention. In 2013 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.Praise for Sean McGlynn"McGlynn tells a dashing story with gusto ... an entertaining military history." Dan Jones, The Spectator"Unlike many books on warfare, this volume dares to say what others won't.... Sean McGlynn's excellent book...paints a bleak but accurate picture of men at war.... McGlynn makes a convincing case as he analyses battles, sieges and campaigns" Andy McNab, Mail on Sunday"Excellent...vividly and wittily related, full of detail, and consistently fascinating" The Daily Telegraph

Robin's Life is not what she expected it to be...Do you ever think, 'This can't be my life It can't ' I do, almost every minute of every day. After twenty-six years I've discovered only two basic truths. Number one is that make-up changes based on the proximity to my apartment. The second is that the whole world knows there's something more to life; that is, the whole world except one: me.The make-up thing is, I think, the more disturbing one. In the bathroom mirror it all looks flawless; I'm a goddess of beauty and sexiness. Just out the door, it looks great. A couple of blocks later and it starts to go a bit weird. A few more blocks and drag queens-and not the gorgeous-could-seduce-any-straight-guy sort, but the sort that look like they've just been 'dragged' facedown across the MAC counter of Macy's while being forcibly removed from the store for trying to steal an INC dress so s/he could perform "I Will Survive" at Amateurs' Night sort-start asking me for tips. The type my roommate calls 'Scare Queens.' Three Metro stops out, the Scare Queens are kicking down the train's doors with their Payless Size 14s as the snotty woman's voice on the tinny speakers is screaming for people to run for their lives. My only comfort is that it's just make-up. I mean, my friend Tammy has the same problem, but with her underwear. Some of the panty lines she gets look more like shelves. I mean, this one pair actually made her bottom look like it had a cliff across it. I would have told her but the mini she was wearing, you know, did nothing to help, and I don't think it could have handled it all on its own, if you know what I mean. It didn't matter after all because she ended up meeting her boyfriend that night and they've been going out for three years. So the make-up thing shouldn't be that disturbing. I'm beginning to get the feeling that everyone has read ahead in the book of life, and I've lost my bookmark. So I've had to start over from the beginning and guess what, I'm not catching up. I don't have a real job, a real boyfriend, a real place to live, or any real prospects on any of these fronts. But right now that's the least of my worries. Yesterday I received unflinching proof that I am a failure at life. I got fired from a temp agency. Do you have any idea how hard that is in this town My last placement sent me packing because I accidentally forwarded an internal e-mail about billing irregularities to the law firm's entire client list. Why a temp should get a memo like that in the first place is beyond me. The agency told me that they would not have any assignments for me anymore.I've decided that was the last straw I am going to get a proper job. Or better, a career. I'll find a boyfriend; no wait, I'm going to get myself a lover. It's 1997, I'm a modern chic, and I'm going to find the best, most glamorous life...just as soon as the world stops spinning and I can get out of bed.
