Stefano Cerio (*1962) directs his attention to alternative worlds: for his elaborate series he takes pictures of recreational paradises—ski arenas, cruises, water and fun parks. For the artist, Italian street altars even count among these colorful illusory worlds that people create for the purpose of escaping from everyday life. Yet in his cool photographs Cerio without exception exposes the fun rides and the adventure pools in the off-season and therefore devoid of visitors; the ruptures, the bleakness, and the senselessness that become visible behind the amusing façades. For Chinese Fun, the photographer visited a whole range of recreational parks, water landscapes, and sports grounds in Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Hong Kong. His centrally organized compositions are made with a plate camera and document selected absurd arrangements—from a concrete fruit basket as large as a house to the looped tracks of an enormous roller coaster in the interior courtyard of an office complex. Words become images—writing, drawings, designs. For around twenty years Stefan Marx has been studying script. Lines of songs, sayings, sentences, and quotations, which he then translates in his own script, his graphic writing, into paintings or drawings—two-dimensional surfaces. The poetry of the statements and the painterly quality of the execution combine to form strong works of art. Marx develops each of his pieces with great precision for the specific situation, for the individual work of art, regardless of whether it is an edition, a unique work, a house, or a small invitation card. This is the first book about his Word Paintings in their many varieties and in all media. Essays explain Marx’s drawing, printmaking, and painting, as well as his unique interplay of art and pop culture, sign and life.

The ground is covered in snow, the horizon a dark line of mountains; low milky clouds hide the sky. In the foreground, a shapeless form, a strange sagging mass of bright colors—red, blue and yellow—stirs as it fills with air. In less than a minute a popular fairground attraction appears: an inflatable, rotund form, awkward and genial, shaped like a double slide or a springboard, the kind often seen in children’s play areas, at fairs and village gatherings. Along with other inflatables in the same vein—a chubby castle complete with dragon, a football pitch—the slide is part of the bizarre landscape conjured up in Stefano Cerio’s Aquila, a series of photographs taken in Abruzzo at different times of year and in highly impactful settings not far from L’ Aquila, on the plains of Campo Felice, Campo Imperatore and Pescasseroli.
After the success of Coincidences at Museums, Austrian photographer Stefan Draschan has continued to work on his various photographic series-and time and time again he has succeeded in finding eye-catching moments. It is therefore high time for a new book that presents his staged series for the first time, shows a selection from the previously unpublished series Cars Matching Homes, and above all presents new highlights from his museum series, which have become increasingly diverse. Draschan's work has inspired a wide audience to identify patterns and joyful compositions in everyday life. This beautifully designed book shows just how many visual surprises and unusual perspectives this master of the unexpected moment has to offer.
Drawing and Reading In 2019, Berlin-based contemporary artist Stefan Marx created a series of drawings for a daily column in The New York Times. Now, he has turned his Reading the News series into quite a unique board book. Whether you think of it as an artist’s book, a coloring book, or an inspiring children’s book, it opens up unusual spaces for our imaginations. With just a few concise lines, Stefan Marx cheerful fruit and veg will change your frame of mind about reading the news.

»Keep it like a Secret« In 2019, Stefan Marx began his series of monotypes. In collaboration with Berlin-based screen printer Bjorn Wiede, he developed his own working method: Three individual images are created in three steps-one positive, one negative and the "ghost." What initially fascinated him about this new approach was the bold application of paint and the intensity of the pigments. During the application of the paint, the surface of the picture itself is not touched- instead the image results from the manipulations on the silkscreen itself. Many of these Monotypes are typefaces- Marx's signature wry sayings and quotations-but there are also figurative motifs, including animal drawings and other symbols from his pictorial inventory. This book follows on from the volume Schriftbilder / Type Works from 2020. Again, Marx has developed this book as an artists' book, creating a fascinating interleaving between the final works and the design sketches from his notebooks.
Stefan Hunstein: In the Ice

The artist Stefan Hunstein brought magical photographs of untouched landscapes back from his journey to the Arctic in 2012. In their majesty and beauty, their immensity and their deadly cold they echo the visions of ice in painting and literature, especially during the Romantic era. The publication shows a selection of these breathtaking photographs which are being presented in public for the first time – also in a series of exhibitions. Here Hunstein, famous for his critical exami nation of contemporary history through the artistic processing of existing pictures, has taken up the camera himself and has created “Dream Pictures” which retain a hint of unreality in their outlines, shadows and reflections, in their theatrical blue lumi nosity and the bizarre, constantly changing structures. In these photos – printed on glass using a special technique – the artist links the fragile and the monstrous, the beauty of nature and “the horrors of the ice and of darkness” (Christoph Ransmayr)
