Thermal Protective Clothing for Firefighters explores the materials, design, and usage of thermal protective clothing. The characteristics of fire hazards are discussed in detail, and the thermal environments faced by firefighters in these fire hazards are also examined. The different types of potential burn injuries and the heat stress that occurs to firefighters’ bodies when exposed to such thermal environments are analyzed. Furthermore, the development of various high performance fibers and fabrics for thermal protective clothing is discussed. The test methods and existing standards to evaluate the thermal protective and physiological comfort performances of the fabrics and clothing are critically reviewed. Recent developments in the field of fire- and heat-resistant materials have led to significant improvements in thermal protective clothing. In parallel with this, the complexity and risk levels of fires, especially in industrial-storage facilities, and developments in health and safety cultures have increased the demand for high-performance heat- and flame-resistant clothing and equipment, designed to mitigate skin burn injuries and reduce risk of death from fire hazards. Throughout the work, the gaps and limitations in existing test methods and standards are identified, and approaches are recommended for the development of enhanced test methods. Scenario modeling and its implications for firefighters’ protective clothing is discussed, and various factors affecting performance are established. Finally, various key issues related to thermal protective clothing are addressed to guide the future research in the field of thermal protective clothing for firefighters. This book will help materials-textile engineers to develop high performance thermal protective clothing that can enhance the protection, safety, and comfort of firefighters.

The Onge of Little Andaman, one of the surviving important Negrito communities in the world, have a very small static population since last four decades. There have been several critical issues pertaining to adopting the induced changes in their habitat and economy. The volume presents detailed documentation and in-depth analysis of the situation and concerns related to their survival. The volume is the outcome of a prolonged field investigation and research presented in the form of analytical and development ethnography with ecological, socio-cultural, economic and political perspectives of a dwindling community listed under Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group of India. The Onge have been rather vulnerable toward any option for radical change, they deserve close, careful attention to ward off any untoward impact of change-initiatives.The authors, a team composed of an Anthropologist and a Human Ecologist, have tried to throw light on the degree of agreements between the induced change programmes and the peoples’ age-old survival strategy. The depth of the authors’ intimate interaction with the people, their ecology, cultural niche, psychology, economy, and in a way the livelihood as such, presents a flavour hitherto unknown. The volume is remarkably enriched with good number of rare photographs along with important maps, charts and illustrations. This work is an invaluable record for reviewing and revising process and outcome of the long continued welfare programme before further such application on the remaining groups in the archipelago. The local and global level researchers, teachers and planners, interested in foraging tribal population and issues related to their welfare, development, etc., will certainly find this volume extremely useful. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Distribution System Optimization to Manage Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) for Grid Services
Recent fire-related damages and fatalities caused by high-voltage transmission lines coupled with dry weather are costing billions of dollars annually, with the only practical solution being de-energizing the lines and disrupting the power supply to millions of customers. The recent advances in the distribution grid, including the integration of distributed generation (DGs), distributed energy resources (DERs), and microgrids, provide potential means to improve the grid’s operational resilience. An advanced decision-support system is needed to plan and manage grid operations by proactively managing the grid’s variable, uncertain, and distributed resources. Consequently, resilient operational solutions for power distribution grids have drawn significant attention. These applications range from leveraging recent advances in smart grid technology, such as remote control capabilities and DER integration, to enabling advanced grid services such as frequency and voltage support for the bulk grid and resilient operations through intentional islanding to support critical services during disruptions. This monograph provides a much-needed primer on optimization methods used in active power distribution systems for advanced operations, with the goal of benefiting researchers working in this field. The graduate students and young researchers working in the area of DERs and distribution systems operations need a background on not only topics related to power distribution engineering but also a wide variety of interdisciplinary subjects to address the upcoming challenges. The monograph will benefit a diverse pool of researchers and industry practitioners by building the necessary background on modeling the distribution systems (with DERs) and system optimization methods for provisioning grid services.
