The Republican Vision of John Tyler

The Republican Vision of John Tyler

Dan Monroe

Perhaps no other president has so often borne the epithet of ""imbecile"" as John Tyler, who was expelled from his own party by a rump Whig congressional caucus. The vicious political infighting that characterized his term may account for the low regard in which his presidency has been held by historians, who have generally ranked him as one of the least successful chief executives, despite achievements such as the Webster-Ashburton treaty, which heraided improved relations with Great Britain, and the annexation of Texas, which added millions of acres to the national domain. Why did John Tyler pursue what appears to have been a politically self-destructive course with regard to both his first party, the Democrats, and his later political alliance, the Whigs? Was it on the grounds of principle, as he asserted? And if so, what principles? Dan Monroe has set out to explain the beliefs that commanded such overwhelming fealty from Tyler that they led to his resigning his Senate seat and exercising politically suicidal presidential vetoes. Monroe traces the origins of Tyler's political philosophy in his early years in the Virginia legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives before examining the crises Tyler faced during his term in the House: the Panic of 1819, the financially tottering national bank, and the Missouri debate. In surveying Tyler's Senate career, Monroe examines his conflict with President Andrew Jackson, the tariff controversy with South Carolina, and the Removal crisis. Finally, Monroe turns from the establishment of Tyler's philosophical moorings and attitudes to their implementation during his term as president. He persuasively surveys a number of key events, such as the bank vetoes of 1841, the additional vetoes of the tariff in 1842, and the annexation of Texas. His intent is to find the unifying thread(s) of principle shaped in the earlier years that make sense of these controversial presidential actions. A portrait emerges of ""a man struggling to maintain a treasured philosophical worldview amidst an unforgiving political maelstrom.
August Kibler's Stories for Tyler
Was it a chance meeting in the Daisy Cafe that brought Tyler Jemison and his boys into August Kibler's life, or was it the mysterious workings of Tyler's grandmother, Momma Daisy? In this companion book to the novel As the Daisies Bloom, August shares with Tyler a life's thoughts on what he would call his tiny systematic theology. What might Eve say after millennia of being the first scapegoat? What might the first and last wives of the great king say to us if we read between the lines? How can we walk a bit with Joseph as he rides with Mary into Bethlehem? And what does Philip have to say to the black Eunuch, and to us about church membership?Journey with the author as he imagines what we might have overlooked in the Bible stories that we teach our children. He shows how reimagining these people in voices for our time can bring to life each of these important guides, who could never have imagined how they would shape 2,000 years of Christianity, and how they can still transform us.

I realize that more than 12,000 books have been written abut the John Tyler Administration, but I have to publish this one to move the chains and complete my 57-volume project: A Comedian's History of the United States. This is 10,000 words, and there are about six pics. Tyler dies as a member of the Confederate Congress. He became President because William H. Harrison caught the flu. Items covered in here include, the explosion on the Princeton, the McLeod Trial, the mutiny on the Creole, and the Tin Horn Rebellion in New York State - One penny out of every 50 sales goes to the FPSR: The Foundation to Prevent Sideline Reporters.
The Films and Life of Tom Tyler: Cowboy, Monster, Hero
Actor Tom Tyler is perhaps yet another performer from the 1920s-1950s who may only be remembered for his work in westerns and serials, but Tyler was different from many of his peers by looking to expand his acting opportunities and successfully becoming a character actor. His non-western appearances include "Gone with there Wind," "Talk of the Town" (with Cary Grant and Ronald Colman) and "Samson and Delilah," among many others. Director John Ford made his part of his company of actors. Tyler was the son of Eastern European immigrants who originally settled in upper New York State to work in the mines but then moved to Detroit to find employment in the auto plants. Tyler actually hitched his way across the country to Los Angeles to seek a career as an actor and after several years of struggle was chosen to have his own series of westerns in 1926. He literally acted until the incurable disease he had was too much to bear, passing in 19564 at the age of 50. His accomplishments deserve attention and celebration. How many people worked for directors Ford, Ron Ormand, George Stevens, Howard Hawks, as well as Ed Wood? How many other people gained a certain kind of film immortality by playing a murderous mummy ("The Mummy's Hand') and the first superhero in live action film ( "Adventures of Captain Marvel").

The Presidencies of William Henry Harrison and John Tyler

The Presidencies of William Henry Harrison and John Tyler

Norma Lois Peterson

University Press of Kansas

Wearied by the hotly contested Log Cabin and Hard Cider campaign that unseated the Democratic incumbent, Martin Van Buren, Harrison succumbed to pneumonia after only one month in office, the first chief executive to die in the White House. His death precipitated a governmental crisis, which Vice President John Tyler promptly resolved--to the consternation of his Whig Party--by claiming the office and title of president, thus setting a precedent that only later was codified in the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the Constitution. Instead of the pliable Harrison, the Whigs confronted in Tyler a tenacious defender of presidential prerogative and a formidable foe of their plan to establish congressional supremacy over the executive branch. Threatened with impeachment, repeatedly exhorted to resign, banished from the Whig Party, abandoned by his cabinet, and burned in effigy, Tyler stood firm and maintained the integrity of the presidential office. Peterson argues that the Tyler administration deserves more credit than it has received for what was accomplished--and preserved--under difficult circumstances.
