Science communication, once the exclusive preserve of a scientific elite, has not been immune to the growing influence of mass media over society. As mass media becomes the most prominent site of public deliberation over science, multiple voices-both expert and non-expert-have begun to emerge, rewriting the social contract of science. In the new millennium, the Indian state of Kerala saw a number of scientific controversies being discussed in the regional newspapers. Set against the backdrop of case studies of three major public controversies, Contested Knowledge explores how these mediated disputes brought the otherwise hidden dynamics of scientific knowledge production into full public view. It examines critical questions about 'medialized science', such as: What is a scientific-citizenry? How did a 'scientific public sphere' develop in Kerala? How does public contestation of knowledge contribute to deliberative democracy by re-instilling politics into science? Are there limits to such a democratization of science? A fascinating commentary on the relation between science and society, this volume is a pioneering work that analyses the science-media-public interaction in a non-Western context.

For upper-level undergraduate courses in deterministic and stochastic signals and system engineering An Integrative Approach to Signals, Systems and Inference Signals, Systems and Inference is a comprehensive text that builds on introductory courses in time- and frequency-domain analysis of signals and systems, and in probability. Directed primarily to upper-level undergraduates and beginning graduate students in engineering and applied science branches, this new textbook pioneers a novel course of study. Instead of the usual leap from broad introductory subjects to highly specialized advanced subjects, this engaging and inclusive text creates a study track for a transitional course. Properties and representations of deterministic signals and systems are reviewed and elaborated on, including group delay and the structure and behavior of state-space models. The text also introduces and interprets correlation functions and power spectral densities for describing and processing random signals. Application contexts include pulse amplitude modulation, observer-based feedback control, optimum linear filters for minimum mean-square-error estimation, and matched filtering for signal detection. Model-based approaches to inference are emphasized, in particular for state estimation, signal estimation, and signal detection. The text explores ideas, methods and tools common to numerous fields involving signals, systems and inference: signal processing, control, communication, time-series analysis, financial engineering, biomedicine, and many others. Signals, Systems, and Inference is a long-awaited and flexible text that can be used for a rigorous course in a broad range of engineering and applied science curricula.

This book investigates fiction in English, written within, and published from India since 2000 in the genre of mythology-inspired fiction in doing so it introduces the term ‘Bharati Fantasy’. This volume is anchored in notions of the ‘weird’ and thus some time is spent understanding this term linguistically, historically (‘wyrd’) as well as philosophically and most significantly socio-culturally because ‘reception’ is a key theme to this book’s thesis. The book studies the interface of science, Hinduism and itihasa (a term often translated as ‘history’) within mythology-inspired fiction in English from India and these are specifically examined through the lens of two overarching interests: reader reception and the genre of weird fiction. The book considers Indian and non-Indian receptions to the body of mythology-inspired fiction, highlighting how English fiction from India has moved away from being identified as the traditional Indian postcolonial text. Furthermore, the book reveals broader findings in relation to identity and Indianness and India’s post-millennial society’s interest in portraying and projecting ideas of India through its ancient cultures, epic narratives and cultural (Hindu) figures.

Building Information Modeling or BIM has been widely applied to new construction projects, but is less used to used to support renovation activities. Building Information Modeling for Renovation and Refurbishment: A Practical Guide addresses that issue and provides a practical guide centered around well-defined use cases of applying BIM to demonstration projects. The authors have worked on the European Union’s Horizon 2020 funded BIM-Speed project where they developed more than 20 such use cases with demonstrative implementations on real-world renovation projects. The use cases were also formalized as standard BuildingSmart International use cases. The book provides a more accessible and general description of a selected number of the most important of these use cases for renovation practitioners. Additionally, the book will discuss requirements for information management and BIM implementation planning for renovation projects to allow for the seamless implementation of use cases on projects.

So line up your spices, ready your grated coconut and go to it. You are in for both a literary and gastronomic treat.”—Abraham Verghese, author of The Covenant of WaterNow in an expanded edition with new recipes and photographs, this unique cookbook-memoir transports readers to Kerala, a verdant, tropical state on the Malabar Coast of South India.Since ancient times, seafarers and traders have been drawn by the lure of spices to Kerala. Saint Thomas also traveled this spice route, converting several Brahmin families who later intermarried with Syrians who had settled here; thus was born the vibrant Syrian Christian community of Kerala. Today, ayurvedic massage resorts and backwater cruises make this scenic land a top tourist destination, and spices still draw both travelers and gourmands to its rich culinary heritage. It is this legacy that The Kerala Kitchen brings us, through more than 170 recipes and the stories that accompany them.Authentic and easy to prepare, these recipes are adapted for the North American kitchen, and accompanied by a guide to spices, herbs, and equipment, as well as a glossary of food terms. Interwoven between these recipes, in the best tradition of the cookbook memoir, are tales of talking doves, toddy shops, traveling chefs and killer coconuts, evoking the beauty of a bygone era as well as the compelling pull of the present one.Sample recipes:Meen Vevichathu (Fish Curry Cooked in a Clay Pot)Parippu (Lentils with Coconut Milk)Thiyal (Shallots with Tamarind and Roasted Coconut)Pesaha Appam (Steamed Rice Bread)Paalappam (Lace-Rimmed Pancakes)Karikku Pudding (Tender Coconut Pudding)
