Today, the final exam at the end of Secondary School is the main gateway to further education, training, and jobs in Ireland. With an enhanced level of completion, the importance of this exam has come sharply into focus. The emphasis is now swaying towards continuous assessment; you, as a student, have an opportunity to develop, enhance and show off your skills during the year and work done will be aggregated towards your final mark. I am sure you would prefer to have some marks in the bag heading into the final exam as opposed to having all the emphasis on one day, similar to what is currently happening in subjects like History, Construction Studies and Geography for example. Spreading the risk is wise, especially as things can go wrong on the day; you could be unlucky with your paper, have a personal problem, or even feel unwell. While a model of continuous assessment is welcomed, I feel that the terminal exam is, and will continue to be, the fairest and most efficient way to differentiate students in preparation for third level education. The brilliant thing about the Leaving Certificate final exam is that everyone is on the one level playing field. The standard of integrity of the State Exams Commission (SEC) is extremely high, therefore grades achieved by students are genuine and earned. I have always been fascinated with how students prepare, cope with, react to and write final exams. I am intrigued how we, as teachers and parents, can help you improve your knowledge and develop your skills to help you achieve better results. Every year a new group of enthusiastic students arrive into sixth year thinking "How Can I ACE the Leaving Cert?" This book focuses on providing essential advice and techniques that will help you do exactly that. It will discuss studying in the most efficient way, preparing for your mocks, the final lead up, just before the exams, the exam hall itself, and of course, writing the paper. This book will also give an insight into nutrition and advice for your parents, so that they can help you in the best way possible. It is natural for anxiety levels to elevate as the exams approach and you may even find you can't breathe properly or the worry causes butterflies in your stomach. The advantage of knowing what to expect and being seriously prepared is that you can relax and feel confident as you start your exams. This book will provide loads of information that will build your confidence and settle those nerves. You can open it on any chapter depending on what stage of the year you are at. Along with imparting my own practical knowledge, advice lists and examples, I have also enlisted the help of current sixth years and former students who have just completed their exams. They have advised me on what they would have liked to have in place, the pitfalls and what worked and didn't work for them. The survey results from the sixty-strong cohort in Chapter Nine is a very interesting read. On my part, I have attended many conferences and seminars, have reviewed many videos, presentations and documents, and handpicked the most relevant facts for you. Wrapped together, I hope each page will inspire and give you the confidence to achieve your wildest educational dreams, and above all 'ACE' the Leaving Cert.

The Late Great Johnny Ace and the Transition from R&B to Rock 'n' Roll
Johnny Ace's crooning style and stirring ballads made him the first postwar African American artist to cross over to a white audience. After a string of R&B hits, Ace released the million-selling "Pledging My Love," a song headed to the top of the charts when the singer accidentally shot himself in his dressing room between sets at a show. James M. Salem captures the enigmatic, captivating, and influential R&B legend. Venturing from raucous Beale Street to Houston's vibrant Fourth Ward, Salem places Johnny Ace within a multifaceted world of postwar rhythm and blues that included B. B. King, Johnny Otis, Big Mama Thornton, and Gatemouth Brown. Salem also examines how entrepreneur Don D. Robey and his wife Evelyn Johnson promoted Ace to the top of the charts. Yet fame, as always, had a price. Ace's tours on the Chitlin' Circuit meant endless one-night stands and a grueling schedule that kept him on the road 340 days per year. Comprehensive and filled with anecdotes, The Late Great Johnny Ace and the Transition from R&B to Rock 'n' Roll tells the story of the star who fused black and white styles and changed American popular music forever.

Bogart Rogers

University Press of Kansas

Just beyond that beckoning ""haze"", Captain Bogart Rogers and his fellow pilots flew into enemy territory to fight the world's first air war. Suffused with the romance of flight and the harsh realities of aerial combat, Rogers's letters to his fiancee, Isabelle Young, vividly detail his wartime experiences against a lethal and elusive opponent exemplified by the likes of Baron von Richthofen's Flying Circus. The son of controversial Los Angeles attorney Earl Rogers (""the greatest jury lawyer of his time"", claimed Clarence Darrow) and brother to pioneering Hearst journalist Adela Rogers St. Johns, Bogart made his mark in the Great War. Of the three hundred-plus Americans who joined the British air corps in 1917, only Rogers and two dozen other volunteers became ""aces"" by shooting down five or more German planes. He himself claimed six ""kills"" in fighting during the Second Battle of the Marne, the Somme Offensive, Cambrai, Ypres-Lys and six other major engagements. Rogers also had a definite flair for writing, one that launched his postwar career as a journalist and screenwriter in Hollywood. The letters in this volume are a striking testament to that skill. Lucid, reflective, highly articulate, and touched with flashes of humour, they illuminate the challenges of aviation training, daily life at the aerodromes, the liberating wonders of flight, and the sobering truths of a devastating war. They also reflect Rogers's constant longing for his future bride ""Izzy"" (who celebrates her 99th birthday in 1996).

Bob Dollar is a young man from Denver trying to make good in a bad world. Out of college and aimless, Dollar takes a job with Global Pork Rind, scouting out big spreads of land that can be converted to hog farms. Soon he's holed up in a two-bit Texas town called Woolybucket, where he settles into LaVon Fronk's old bunkhouse for fifty dollars a month, helps out at Cy Frease's Old Dog Caf , and learns the hard way how vigorously the old Texas ranch owners will hold on to their land, even when their children want no part of it. Robust, often bawdy, strikingly original, That Old Ace in the Hole traces the waves of change that have shaped the American West over the past century--and in Bob Dollar, Proulx has created one of the most irrepressible characters in contemporary fiction.
