Standing on a ridge of the Bavarian Alps, artist Albrecht D rer is torn between responsibility and infatuation. Below him lie Venice and the vibrant woman he just met. Ahead of him is Nuremberg, where he and his wife make their home. D rer's wife lacks the allure and spirit of the Venetian woman, but his marriage to her secured him with the artistic workshop he so desperately needs. So, suppressing his desires, a despondent D rer chooses duty over passion and turns his steps toward home. So begins Across the Alps, Gail Tanzer's intriguing fictionalization of the life of one of history's great artists. With his wife's support, D rer manufactures exquisite religious woodcuts, making them into prints and selling them at prices even common people can afford. His success and reputation soar, but D rer is troubled. He yearns for passion and beauty, two desires that his loyal but cold and homely wife cannot satisfy. Driven by the need for resolution, D rer returns to Venice, committed to locating a man forging his work in Venice but mainly to see what he has been missing. What happens in Venice forces D rer into making a final decision between a great romance and fidelity-a choice that will change the course of his life forever.
Artist of the Reformation: The Story of Albrecht Dürer
A biography of Albrecht D rer, one of the most influential artists of the Renaissance and Reformation. In addition to creating hundreds of engravings, woodcuts, drawings, and paintings, he wrote books on geometry, fortification, and human proportions. He explored the meaning of beauty in his art textbook, which was called Food for Young Artists. The Christian worldview which he brought to the field of art is still relevant today. D rer was counted among the leading intellectuals of the sixteenth century. He witnessed the coming Reformation and made the acquaintance of men such as Erasmus, Martin Luther, Melanchthon, and the Emperor Maximilian. Though he created works of art for wealthy patrons, he made his woodcuts affordable for ordinary people. In this way, D rer brought the Bible to a wide audience through his brilliant illustrations of the book of Revelation and other themes. This biography includes over twenty illustrations by Albrecht D rer, who wrote: "Painting is a useful art when it is of a godly sort and employed for holy edification." The life and art of D rer is food not only for young artists, but for all who seek beauty and truth. This book is written on a 5th-6th grade reading level, but younger children will enjoy having it read aloud to them.
