Nation and Gender in Higher Classical Music Education

Nation and Gender in Higher Classical Music Education

Ann Werner; Cecelia Ferm Almqvist

This book asks how nation and gender shapes higher classical music education in Europe today. Building on transnational research in three European higher music education institutions, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, and the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, the book analyses policy, interviews, teaching situations and concerts in classical music performance programs. With a starting point in feminist intersectional and postcolonial theory the book focuses on how nationalised and gendered ideas and materialities influence higher classical music education in the borderlands of Eastern and Western Europe. The analysis of the intersection of nation and gender has never been studied closely in higher classical music education before. The book’s unique contribution includes theorising musical families as place-based ideas of both musical and musician ideals, and how these ideas benefit some students more than others. The six empirical chapters of the book analyses websites, policy documents, interviews and participant observations from fieldwork at three higher music education institutions in Estonia, Finland and Hungary. Drawing on feminist and cultural theory the similarities as well as differences between institutions and instrument departments are discussed. The book is suited for teachers and students working in higher classical music education and for researchers seeking to understand higher music education in political polarised times of Europe. Functioning as an introduction to how to critically analyse the practises of higher classical music education the book provides tools for theoretically oriented students in music education and musicology and for those students and teachers working within classical music performance programs.

Failed Child Welfare Policy

Failed Child Welfare Policy

Janet R. Hutchinson; Cecelia E. Sudia

University Press of America

In Failed Child Welfare Policy, Janet R. Hutchinson examines child welfare policy in the United States. Since the early 1970's, the controversial family preservation movement has existed in America. The 30 year history of this movement, and the failure of it vividly illustrate many of the problems found in the system charged with caring for our country's abused, neglected, and abandoned children. Hutchinson argues that family preservation is both a philosophy and a program, and has the potential to positively alter the service system nationally. Pointing to the current clash of discourses, Hutchinson contends that a reconceptualized child welfare discourse, created through a renewed commitment by the social work profession and the involvement of disciplines not traditionally involved in child welfare, is the most prudent, perhaps only course of action that can achieve a re-constructed child welfare system. Cecelia E. Sudia contributes to the historical content and background information on prevention programs provided in this book.

What does it mean to teach for human dignity? How does one do so? This practical book shows how the leaders at four urban public schools used a process called Descriptive Inquiry to create democratic schools that promote and protect human dignity. The authors argue that teachers must attend to who a child is and find a way to create classrooms that allow everyone to feel safe and express ideas. Responding to the perennial question of how to cultivate teachers, they offer an approach that attends to both ethical development and instructional methods. They also provide a way forward for school leaders seeking to listen to, and provide guidance for, their staff. At its core, Descriptive Inquiry in Teacher Practice champions a commitment to schools as places in which children, teachers, and leaders can learn how to live and work well together.Book Features:Illustrates how to take an inquiry stance toward the difficult issues that educators face every day.Examines how themes regularly addressed in foundations can be used to improve schools.Includes engaging portraits of progressive urban schools that showcase the qualities of the leaders that guide them.Demonstrates the power of a progressive and humanistic education for children of color and for those from lower-income backgrounds.
