Relationship Based Leadership

Relationship Based Leadership

Chad Richardson; Kathleen Earle

University Press of America
2005
nidottu
Relationship Based Leadership has been written primarily for child-care leaders looking for a better way to manage their agencies—one that emphasizes cooperation rather that control; motivation from within rather that from without; and accountability to a team, more than to a boss. Such changes not only require fundamental shifts in how managers and workers think, but even greater changes in their relationships to one another. It carefully explains the basic changes needed to bring about relationship-based leadership, including principles of motivation, managing social situations, principles of team leadership, strategic planning, keys to being more effective in relationships, staff development strategies, and working through personality conflicts at all levels of an organization. The text illustrates these concepts with case studies (derived from on-site interviews with early childhood program directors) and anecdotal experiences in actual childcare settings. The book's applied focus utilizes learning exercises that allow the reader to apply the principles and skills presented in each chapter.

Written in cooperation with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), Athletic Training and Sports Medicine: An Integrated Approach, Fifth Edition is a multi-purpose, multi-course text that emphasizes the post-injury management techniques used by athletic trainers and physicians in management of orthopaedic injuries. This classic text has been re-titled to more accurately reflect the topical coverage of injury management and care. Richly illustrated and full of evidence-based practice, this text describes surgical techniques and their implications on rehabilitation/activity and captures the totality of injury management including: pathology, immediate management, diagnostic imaging, definitive and differential diagnosis, medical management, medications, surgical intervention, post-injury and/or post-surgical management, and rehabilitation. Athletic trainers are well educated on how to evaluate, manage, and rehabilitate athletic injuries. However, no other mainstream textbook describes what is involved with common surgical procedures and how those procedures affect the treatment and rehabilitation process and the eventual return to activity. Athletic Training and Sports Medicine: An Integrated Approach serves as a primary reference to tie it all together.

Captain James Cook first made contact with the area now known as British Columbia in 1778. The colonists who followed soon realized they needed a written history, both to justify their dispossession of Aboriginal peoples and to formulate an identity for a new settler society.Writing British Columbia History shows how Euro-Canadian historians took up this task, and struggled with the newness of colonial society and overlapping alliances to the British Empire, the United States, and Canada. In explorers' accounts, promotional literature, "pioneer" histories, and academic studies, they eased these tensions by defining British Columbia as part of a global British Empire, incorporating it into an expanding Anglo-Saxon civilization, and writing it into the empire of history itself. This sweeping study of the role of history writing in colonialism and nation building will appeal to anyone interested in British Columbia history, the history of the Pacific Northwest, or history writing in Canada.

From earliest times, sex has fascinated and repulsed society in equal measure. In an effort to untangle Western society's complex relationship with the realities of sex, this provocative volume explores the ways in which governments, religious leaders and cultures in Europe tried to regulate sex and sexuality throughout history. From the sacred texts of ancient Israel to the slums of 19th century Britain, this book explores political, legal and cultural controls on consensual sex and the individuals and movements that resisted them. Topics range from prostitution and homosexuality to marriage, contraception and abortion. While traditional narrative holds that Europe alternated between sexual freedom and oppression through the Victorian age, this work reveals that the real story of how sex was regulated--and how people defied regulation--is not so clear cut.

Most of us are regular people who have good days and bad days. Our lives are radically ordinary and unexciting. That means they're the kind of lives God gets excited about. While the world worships beauty and power and wealth, God hides his glory in the simple, the mundane, the foolish, working in unawesome people, things, and places. In our day of celebrity worship and online posturing, this is a refreshing, even transformative way of understanding God and our place in his creation. It urges us to treasure a life of simplicity, to love those whom the world passes by, to work for God's glory rather than our own. And it demonstrates that God has always been the Lord of the cross--a Savior who hides his grace in unattractive, inglorious places.Your God Is Too Glorious reminds readers that while a quiet life may look unimpressive to the world, it's the regular, everyday people that God tends to use to do his most important work.

In our age when the church can too often seem like a poor copy of the world, Chad Bird challenges us to reclaim the astounding originality of our ancient, backward faith. Where the world stresses the importance of success, Bird invites readers to embrace nine specific failures in the areas of our personal lives, our relationships, and the church. Why? Because what human wisdom deems indispensable is so often an impediment to our spiritual growth, and what it deems insignificant is so often essential to it.With compelling examples from the Bible and today, Bird paints an enticing picture of the counterintuitive, countercultural life that God wants for us. He helps readers delight in all of the ways that Jesus turned the world upside-down, allowing us to experience true freedom, not from our weaknesses but in the midst of them.

Why would states ever give up their independence to join federations? While federation can provide more wealth or security than self-sufficiency, states can in principle get those benefits more easily by cooperating through international organizations such as alliances or customs unions.Chad Rector develops a new theory that states federate when their leaders expect benefits from closer military or economic cooperation but also expect that cooperation via an international organization would put some of the states in a vulnerable position, open to extortion from their erstwhile partners. The potentially vulnerable states hold out, refusing to join alliances or customs unions, and only agreeing to military and economic cooperation under a federal constitution.Rector examines several historical cases: the making of a federal Australia and the eventual exclusion of New Zealand from the union, the decisions made within Buenos Aires and Prussia to build Argentina and Germany largely through federal contracts rather than conquests, and the failures of postindependence unions in East Africa and the Caribbean.
