Cloud City Colorado in 1880 - Too Far West
Love, technology and lead type tell the story of yesterday. Leadville, Colorado is ten thousand feet up in the Rocky Mountains. In 1878-1880, men, women and children crossed vast frontiers to get its silver. Gold, silver, knives, guns and liquor fueled the story of a town with few rules.Buckskin Joe, Barney Devlin, glass plate negatives, snake oil, card cheats, fallen doves, mud, work and pioneer spirit come alive in a novel of historical fiction. Life was hard at the bottom, easy at the top.-----------------"Are you calling me a liar or telling me to shut up?"---------------They toiled in back breaking, dark filthy, dangerous pain for nearly every waking hour.-------------Sweetwater Sally ran her hands up and down the bark of one of the pine trees growing in the theatre.----------------"Why The Rat Bastard Gazette is one of the finest newspapers west of the Mississippi." The editor drank straight from the bottle. Inkslinger Charlie carried his pistol high up on the inside of his right arm.----------Shotgun Susy said, "Can't bury him here, Father."---------The winner of the first dog fight escaped from its cage back stage and tore the hoop jumping poodle into high pitched shreds. Next, a man recited Moliere.

After decades of scandal, abuse, and drugging, horseracing was banned, sending Kentucky, once the horse capital of the world, into economic decline. But Limestone Corp's invention of an ultra-realistic robotic horse has raised the industry from the dead: the metalbreds are a new kind of horse, unburdened by pain or fear, and guided by a new kind of jockey - most notably, wunderkind Rosario Vicario. Vicario astonished the racing industry with a home-built metalbred and became an overnight global phenomenon. But then Vicario is murdered.Murder never touches just one person. As the ripples of the crime spread outward, three young women, initially strangers, are drawn together: Ezzardine Clayton, the gambler with the golden touch - and Vicario's best friend;Luz Cabo Trejo, tech genius, botanist, and daughter of racetrackers;and Ty Redson, the maid who dreams of revenge for her own mother's murder. As the three young women search for the truth, their stories and motives begin to intertwine - and their deepest secrets edge toward the light. Each of them is battling her own grief and rage (and two of them are struggling against falling in love) but to uncover the truth they must learn to trust each other...and maybe work together to burn everything down

Augustus Thistlewood was an idealist. The youngest scion of a vastly wealthy family, he'd come to help the poor, deprived people of the strange world of Sybill III - a gas-dwarf world with no habitable land. The human population, descendants of a crashed convict transport, lived on a tiny, crowded, alien antigravity plate they called 'the Big Syd', drifting through the clouds in the upper atmosphere. It was a few square miles of squalor, in a vast sea of sky, ruled by the degenerate relics of two alien empires. The problem was that the people of the Big Syd wanted to help themselves, first - to his money, his liberty, and even his life.Only two things stood between them and this: the first was his 'assistant' Briz, - a ragged urchin he'd picked up as a guide. She reckoned if anyone was going to steal from Augustus, it was going to be her, even if she had to keep him alive so that she could do it. And the second thing was Augustus himself. He didn't know what 'giving up' meant. Actually, he didn't know what most things meant. As a na ve, wide-eyed innocent blundering through the cess-pit of Sybill III, he was going to have to learn, mostly the hard way. Some of that learning was going to be out in the strange society that existed on the endless drifting clumps of airborne vegetation, and the Cloud-Castles of the aliens who hunted across them. Most of it was learning that philanthropy wasn't quite what they'd taught him in college.
