Sonic the Hedgehog and The Beatles: A Comparative Analysis of the Games and Music

Sonic the Hedgehog and The Beatles: A Comparative Analysis of the Games and Music

What could Sonic possibly have in common with The Beatles? Video games featuring a blue hedgehog have little in common with the most influential band ever, right? Wrong. No, there isn't some magic link between, say, Green Hill Zone and "Good Day Sunshine" beyond the vague similarities you can strain and find when comparing any two random subjects. But there are larger parallels.Sonic and The Beatles takes an in-depth look at the game series and the band's discography. There are numerous commonalities between the context of release, technical aspects, and public perceptions of each. The book is an entertaining look at the Sonic series that finds a counterpoint for each release in The Beatles' catalogue, both as a band and as solo artists.
Schenker's Argument and the Claims of Music Theory

Schenker's Argument and the Claims of Music Theory

Blasius Leslie David

Cambridge University Press
2006
pokkari
Heinrich Schenker's theoretical and analytical works claim to resubstantiate the unique artistic presence of the canonic work, and thus reject those musical disciplines such as psychoacoustics and systematic musicology which derive from the natural sciences. In this respect his writing reflects the counter-positivism endemic to the German academic discourse of the first decades of the twentieth century. The rhetoric of this stance, however, conceals a sophisticated programme wherein Schenker situates his project in relation to these sciences, arguing his reading of the musical text as a synthesis of a descriptive psychology and an explanatory historiography (which itself embeds both paleographic and philological assumptions). This book rereads Schenker's project as an attempt to reconstruct music theory as a discipline against the background of the empirical musical sciences of the later nineteenth century.

pokkari
Musical improvisation is an increasingly recognised rehabilitative therapy for people who have experienced traumatic brain injury initially thought to be 'unreachable' or 'non-responsive'.Music Therapy and Traumatic Brain Injury demonstrates how music therapy can be used to attend to the holistic, rather than purely functional, needs of people affected by severe head trauma. Divided into three parts, the first section provides an introduction to the effects brain injury has on a person's livelihood. The second is a comprehensive review of available literature on the use of music therapy in the neurorehabilitative setting. The final section examines three case studies designed according to 'therapeutic narrative analysis', an adaptive research method that uses interviewing and video, which focuses on the unique relationship between the professional and the patient. This book will give clinicians key notes for practice and a vision of the integral role music therapy can have in the successful rehabilitation from brain injury.

Rocking St. Petersburg - Transcultural Flows and Identity Politics in Post-Soviet Popular Music

David-Emil Wickström

In this remarkable book, David-Emil Wickström traces the transcultural flow of popular music production emanating from St. Petersburg, a central hub of the Russian music scene. With a specific focus on the post-Soviet emigrant community in Germany and their event 'Russendisko', Wickström -- himself a trumpet player in two local bands -- explores St Petersburg's vibrant music scene, which provides an electrifying platform for musical exchange. The findings shed a new light on Soviet and post-Soviet popular music history and even Russia's relationship to Ukraine. Wickström demonstrates the filtering processes embedded in transcultural flows and how music is attributed new meanings within new contexts. This innovative book not only promotes a deeper understanding of the role of popular music in society, it also enables a better comprehension of cultural processes in the second decade after the fall of the Soviet Union.
