Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A
for SSAATB and organ The first in a new series of Restoration Canticles from the editors of the acclaimed The Restoration Anthem volumes, Turner's Evening Service in A (here transposed to B flat) uses rich six-part harmony and displays inventiveness and variety in the verses.
Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in G
for SSATB and organ Written in 1852 in the wake of S.S.Wesley's groundbreaking Service in E this is an equally ambitious work with an important obbligato organ part. With only one change of tempo, it has an unflagging forward momentum. An ideal work for those occasions when a large-scale, expansive setting is wanted.
Magnificat & Nunc dimittis in E minor
for SATB chorus with SAT and ATB verses and organ In the absence of any original material, Geoffrey Webber's preparation of this edition has been influenced by the scholarly reconstruction of the work by John Stainer. In Stainer's words 'there is in it a quaintness, not without tenderness and devotional feeling, which recalls the style of the composer's brother Henry, by whose brilliant career and fame he was no doubt overshadowed'.
Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B flat
for SSAATTBB and organ Organist of Trinity College, St John's College, and Professor of Music at Cambridge simultaneously, Walmisley is known today for his Evening Canticles in d minor and a handful of anthems. This fine double choir setting was written some ten years before the d minor set, and is published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. There are fewer contrasts of texture than in the later setting, but the two choirs are used to great effect, with the Gloria starting with striding imitation between soprano and tenor (later alto and bass) over a pedal point in the organ.
Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in A
for SATB and organ Written in 1911, while Browne was at Cambridge, the work is kept in a mainly homophonic style, with the organ supporting. Tenors and basses sing four phrases in unison starting with 'He hath showed strength with his arm' and a soprano solo takes the phrase 'He rememb'ring his mercy'. The Gloria returns to the music of the opening and builds to a fine climax, as does the Nunc dimittis.
