Fraud

Fraud

Gerhard Falk

University Press of America

nidottu
While fraud is generally associated with the business world, this book demonstrates that there is also a good deal of fraud and deception among scientists, writers and philanthropists. Scientists will sometimes announce fraudulent findings in order to raise money for additional research projects. Since many scientists live by this "soft" money and have no other income, the temptation to claim results that never occurred is great. Likewise, authors and journalists may commit fraud by claiming that they saw something that they did not see or that an event occurred which never happened. There are also writers who steal the work of others and publish such material under their own name. There are executives of charitable organizations who steal the money donated to a charitable cause and there are clergy who steal from the members of their own parish, or sell objects that do not belong to them. Some members of the clergy use their trusted office to gain sexual favors from congregants while others entertain their friends at the expense of their congregations. This work is well documented and demonstrates that the notion of the aloof scientists or holy clergy may be no more than a myth, and that even in these professions all things are not what they seem.
Land management as public policy
Twelve Inventions Which Changed America

Twelve Inventions Which Changed America

Gerhard Falk

This book describes twelve inventions that transformed the United States from a rural and small-town community to an industrial country of unprecedented power. These inventions demonstrate that no one person is ever responsible for technological advances and that the culture produces a number of people who work together to create each new invention. The book also shows the influences of technology on society and examines the beliefs and attitudes of those who partake in technological advances. The book is both a sociological analysis and a history of technology in the United States in the past two hundred years.

This book describes the assimilation and acculturation of a small minority who immigrated to the United States in the nineteenth century and again in the twentieth century. Gerhard Falk focuses on refugees who fled from Nazi tyranny in the 1930s, immigrated to America, and succeeded despite immense obstacles. This book includes a review of the most prominent academics that made major contributions to science, medicine, art, and literature in America. The German Jews in America demonstrates that America is still the land of opportunity for everyone who makes an effort, no matter what their religion, ethnicity, or race. In addition, this book is a key to understanding immigration and the role of community in providing the support needed in becoming an American.

A comprehensive, insider history of the C 111, the most famous Mercedes never produced. In March 1969, the news that Daimler-Benz was developing a Wankel rotary-engine sports car hit like a bomb. Six months later, the C 111, with its fascinating design and brilliant driving performance, was the undisputed star of the Frankfurt International Motor Show. The new super sports car was immediately regarded as a worthy successor to the legendary 300 SL. Despite tremendous interest, Mercedes never put the vehicle into full production. Various C 111s appeared over the next decade, featuring different engines, tweaked aerodynamics, and other modern developments. Mercedes used the platform to chase records and test new technologies. Based on access to Mercedes-Benz past and current personnel and the extensive holdings of the Mercedes-Benz Group Archives, this is an authoritative history of the C 111 program. Highlights of this book include: • 520 pages that include more than 1,100 photos and diagrams, many of which have never left the Mercedes archives until now. • Features previously unpublished info and interviews with the people behind the car. • Documents the development of the C 111 in great detail and in depth for the first time. • Comprehensive documentation of the Vision One-Eleven show car. Inspired by the C 111 and unveiled in June 2023, it reinterprets the brand icon of the 1970s with breathtaking design and innovative drive technology. This authoritative history was made possible through the support of Mercedes-Benz Classic, which granted access to the Mercedes-Benz Group Archives, the C 111 cars in the company's collection, and contemporary witnesses who formed the development in the 1960s and 1970s.

This volume of essays about the ongoing crisis concerning Iraq is written from the perspective of the "thoughtful opposition." German and American scholars from diverse backgrounds--moral theology, policy analysis, political science, Middle Eastern history--all criticize, albeit sometimes for different reasons, unilateral U.S. military action against Iraq. The chapters are uniformly free of intemperate language and careless argumentation characteristic of much opposition to American foreign policy. The authors address the moral, legal, political, or historical dimensions of the Iraq problem. They also assess the threat Saddam Hussein represents to his region and the world as well as the prospects for alternative strategies. The reasoning is well-informed, sensitive to complexity, and attentive to detail.Contributions include: Klaus Dicke, "Peace Through International Law and the Case of Iraq"; Hans J. Giessmann, "The Dubious Legitimacy of Preventive Military Action against Iraq"; John Langan, "Is Attacking Iraq a Good Idea?" and "Is There a Just Cause for War against Iraq?"; Gerhard Beestermller, "The United States: Legitimate Authority for War against Iraq?"; Drew Christiansen, "Holy See Policy towards Iraq"; Henner Frtig, "Iraq: How Severe is the Threat?"; and David Cortright, Alistair Millar, and George A. Lopez, "Sanctions, Inspections and Containment. Viable Policy Options in Iraq."While Iraq: Threat and Response may not be welcomed by uncritical supporters of U.S. policy, it is a reasoned, compassionate exploration of alternatives to military action in Iraq. The volume is clearly designed to strengthen opposition to unilateral action in the United States and abroad. It will be of great interest to students of foreign policy, military studies, and the Middle East.Gerhard Beestermller is deputy director of the Catholic Institute for Theology and Peace, near Hamburg. His focus of research is political ethics and peace ethics. David Little is T.J. Dermot Dunphy Professor of the Practice in Religion, Ethnicity, and International Conflict and director of Initiatives in Religion and Public Life at Harvard Divinity School. He is the author, with Scott W. Hibbard, of Islamic Activism and U.S. Foreign Policy.

This book examines modern advances in gender equality and contemporary feminist discourse as a result of the American sexual revolution. It explains how and why the sexual revolution of the 1960s continues to have profound effects on modern views of femininity and what it means to be an American woman. Chapters cover how effective and available birth control affected women's advancement, the breakdown of traditional gender roles, and women's entrance into formerly male-dominated occupations.

Martin Luther's viciously anti-Jewish pamphlet, Vom Schem Hampboras, presented here in its original German and its first-ever English translation, is but one of the many sources translated here for the first time from Latin, Hebrew and German. This study reviews the earliest Christian writings concerning the Jews and shows how Christian synods and influential theologians legitimized and reinforced hatred of the Jewish people. It also examines the modern attempts in Protestant and Catholic theology to promote friendship toward the Jewish people.
Optical Microscanners and Microspectrometers using Thermal Bimorph Actuators

Optical Microscanners and Microspectrometers using Thermal Bimorph Actuators

Optical Microscanners and Microspectrometers using Thermal Bimorph Actuators shows how to design and fabricate optical microsystems using innovative technologies and and original architectures. A barcode scanner, laser projection mirror and a microspectrometer are explained in detail, starting from the system conception, discussing simulations, choice of cleanroom technologies, design, fabrication, device test, packaging all the way to the system assembly. An advanced microscanning device capable of one- and two-dimensional scanning can be integrated in a compact barcode scanning system composed of a laser diode and adapted optics. The original design of the microscanner combines efficiently the miniaturized thermal mechanical actuator and the reflecting mirror, providing a one-dimensional scanning or an unique combination of two movements, depending on the geometry. The simplicity of the device makes it a competitive component. The authors rethink the design of a miniaturized optical device and find a compact solution for a microspectrometer, based on a tunable filter and a single pixel detector. A porous silicon technology combines efficiently the optical filter function with a thermal mechanical actuator on chip. The methodology for design and process calibration are discussed in detail. The device is the core component of an infrared gas spectrometer.

Gerhard Ens

Most writing on Metis history has concentrated on the Resistance of 1869-70 and the Rebellion of 1885, without adequately explaining the social and economic origins of the Metis that shaped those conflicts. Historians have often emphasized the aboriginal aspect of the Metis heritage, stereotyping the Metis as a primitive people unable or unwilling to adjust to civilized life and capitalist society. In this social and economic history of the Metis of the Red River Settlement, specifically the parishes of St Francois-Xavier and St Andrew's, Gerhard Ens argues that the Metis participated with growing confidence in two worlds: one Indian and pre-capitalist, the other European and capitalist. Ens maintains that Metis identity was not defined by biology or blood but rather by the economic and social niche they carved out for themselves within the fur trade. Ens finds that the Metis, rather than being overwhelmed, adapted quickly to the changed economic conditions of the 1840s and actually influenced the nature of change. The opening of new markets and the rise of the buffalo robe trade fed a `cottage industry' whose increasing importance had significant repercussions for the maintenance of ethnic boundaries, the nature of Metis response to the Riel Resistance, and the eventual decline of the Red River Settlement as a Metis homeland.
Holy War in Ancient Israel

Holy War in Ancient Israel

Gerhard von Rad

From the earliest days of Israel's existence as a people, holy war was a sacred institution, undertaken as a cultic act of a religious community. The concept of holy war, an intriguing and sometimes disturbing theme in the Old Testament, is given its most articulate expression in this classic study by the distinguished German scholar Gerhard von Rad. For Israel, the most important feature of holy war was the demand for faith in Yahweh's saving acts. However, von Rad argues, it was not Yahweh alone who acted; rather, because they envisioned Yahweh fighting on their behalf the Israelites themselves were inspired - and obliged - to fight even harder. In this regard, the actual events differed vastly from the picture given by the biblical narratives, which downplay and often exclude the human factor and stress the exclusive warlike action of Yahweh, thus equating holy war with absolute miracle.
