The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen. A vain emperor who cares about nothing except wearing and displaying clothes hires weavers who promise him they will make him the best suit of clothes. The weavers are con-men who convince the emperor they are using a fine fabric invisible to anyone who is either unfit for his position or "hopelessly stupid." The emperor's ministers cannot see the clothes themselves, but pretend that they can for fear of appearing unfit for their positions, and the emperor does the same. Finally, the weavers report that the suit is finished, they mime dressing him, and the emperor marches in procession before his subjects.

This book investigates the writings of German intellectual historian and philosopher Hans Blumenberg. While Blumenberg was not an explicitly political thinker and remains relatively under-explored in Anglophone academia, this project demonstrates that his work makes a valuable contribution to political science. The author considers the intellectual contributions Blumenberg makes to a variety of themes focusing primarily on myth. Rather than seeing myths in a pejorative sense, as primitive modes of thought that have been overcome, Blumenberg reveals that myths are crucial to dealing with the existential anxieties we face. When we trace his thought as it developed throughout his life, we find a rich source of philosophical insights that could enhance our understandings of politics today.

This book highlights and develops a hitherto neglected area of Hans Blumenberg's contributions, i.e., history and philosophy of science. It covers both Blumenberg’s works on the history of ideas and conceptual change, as well as his studies on transformative periods and his intellectual history of technology. Hans Blumenberg (1920-1996) was one of the leading German philosophers after the Second World War, bridging from the continental tradition of philosophy, conceptual history and metaphorology. This volume, though, explores the methodological instruments that he developed and how we may use them to do history and philosophy of science. In doing so it opens up a new field of research and provides insight into further developing a continental history and philosophy of science, making this book of great interest to both historians and philosophers alike.

This open access book celebrates the extraordinary lifetime achievements of Professor Hans Joachim Specht, a visionary scientist whose passion for interdisciplinary research has left an indelible mark on science and society. By seamlessly merging diverse fields, Specht demonstrated how curiosity, vision, and diversity can drive groundbreaking innovation and create lasting societal impact. Unlike conventional scientific biographies that often focus on a single discipline, this book highlights Specht’s remarkable ability to bridge atomic physics, nuclear fission, ultra-relativistic heavy-ion physics, and pioneering contributions to hadron cancer therapy. The chapters cover topics such as Specht's pivotal role in developing hadron cancer therapy from fundamental heavy-ion research, his transformative work in bridging nuclear physics and medicine, and his leadership in establishing Europe's first Hadron Cancer Therapy Center. Readers will discover how Specht's interdisciplinary curiosity extended to the intersections of music, physics, and neuroscience, producing influential publications in prestigious journals and delivering lectures at world-renowned institutions. His story illustrates how cross-disciplinary approaches fuel breakthroughs that extend beyond academia to benefit humanity. The book is a must-read for scientists aspiring to leadership roles in science management and policy. Specht’s visionary leadership exemplifies the ability to make challenge-based decisions that drive progress while addressing societal needs. Through real-life anecdotes, readers gain insights into fostering collaboration, mentoring young scientists, cultivating teamwork, and making strategic decisions for a sustainable future. Scholars, researchers, and students across the disciplines of physics, medicine, and interdisciplinary studies will find invaluable lessons in Specht’s dedication to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring others. More than a tribute, it calls future generations to embrace interdisciplinary approaches, pursue socially relevant science, and lead with vision.

Hans Scharoun is one of the most important architects of the 2 th century as a proponent of organic architecture, he created unconventional and imaginative buildings which adapt to users' needs in a dynamic way. His oeuvre includes family residences and housing estates but also encompasses the German embassy in Brazil, and urban icons such as the Berlin Philharmonie. The book, a cooperation with Baukunstarchiv (the architecture archive) of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, documents the entire range of known completed buildings by Scharoun, including, for the first time, early works in East Prussia. The specially taken photographs by Carsten Krohn, together with the historic photographs and plans from the Hans-Scharoun-Archive offer a new overview of this expressive organic architecture.

The architectural work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt (1890–1954/1889–1972) is not yet adequately appreciated. As members of the Glass Chain initiative and the Ring collective, they shaped, especially through their work with Alfons Anker, the development of Modernist architecture in the 1920s, as evidenced by their winning design for the layout of Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. While their early work was anchored in utopian expressionism, a more objective attitude emerged later, based on the application of new architectural constructs. The book documents all 40 of Hans und Wassili Luckhardt’s realized buildings. Two essays deal with the unbuilt and utopian projects. Newly taken photographs and newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn complement the historical illustrations. Comprehensive documentation of the work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt. With approx. 80 new photographs and 80 newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn

Hans Ulrich Obrist: The Czech Files
This publication is the result of visits carried out by Hans Ulrich Obrist to artists' studios in Prague around 2001 and 2008. Interviews with Milan Grygar, Jiri Kovanda, Karel Malich, Zdenek Sykora and others map the historical events as well as the personal stories of the protagonists of the Czech "second avant-garde" and the "neo-modernism" of the former socialist bloc. Born between 1920 and 1945, this generation lived through the cultural upheaval of the Prague Spring in the 1960s and the "normalization" of the 1970s, when censorship was reintroduced. These interviews contextualize a generation of Czech artists within the historical events that marked their lives and careers, and draw attention to their urgently felt need to resist historical events while keeping their artistic practices sustained, radical and vital. This volume is part of the "Documents" series of critical writings.

Hans Scharoun and the Development of Small Apartment Floor Plans
Romeo and Julia, two residential high-rises in Stuttgart, built 1954-59 and designed by Hans Scharoun (1893-1972), constitute the most original and far-reaching of the various attempts to re-design the entire 'process of living' that this extraordinary protagonist of Germany's modern architecture undertook. Over decades, Scharoun had woven an extensive network of research and knowledge systems as a basis for his floor-plan designs. His unpublished writings and, even more importantly, his lectures from between 1947 and 1958 reveal the countless threads of research and discourse, which his work in residential architecture referenced and absorbed. They highlight the sometimes contradictory, yet constant renewal and consolidation of his knowledge in the field of housing. This new book, based on extensive research in collaboration with Berlin's Akademie der Kunste, demonstrates how closely interlocked Romeo and Julia are with their architect's immense engagement with the topic of housing. Drawing on previously unpublished archive material held at the Akademie der Kunste, the authors for the first time allow the reader an insight into Scharoun's design process. Alongside reproductions of original plans and drawings, the book features excerpts from Scharoun's unpublished text fragments. New images by Swiss architectural photographer Georg Aerni, illustrating the two towers' highly expressive appearance, round out this volume.
