Joe Beef: Surviving the Apocalypse

A new cookbook/survival guide/love letter to Montreal for these apocalyptic times, from the James Beard Award-nominated culinary adventurists and proprietors of the beloved restaurant, Joe Beef. "The first Joe Beef cookbook changed forever what a cookbook could be. Anything that came after had to take it into account. Now, with this latest and even more magnificent beast, the rogue princes of Canadian cuisine and hospitality show us the way out of the numbing, post-apocalyptic restaurant Hell of pretentiousness and mediocrity that threatens to engulf us all. It makes us believe that the future is shiny, bright, beautiful, delicious--and probably Qu b cois. This book will change your life." --Anthony Bourdain It's the end of the world as we know it. Or not. Either way, you want Joe Beef: Surviving the Apocalypse in your bunker and/or kitchen. In their much-loved first cookbook, Fr d ric Morin, David McMillan, and Meredith Erickson introduced readers to the art of living the Joe Beef way. Now, they're back with another deeply personal, refreshingly unpretentious collection of more than 150 new recipes, some taken directly from the menus of Fred and Dave's acclaimed Montreal restaurants, others from summers spent on Laurentian lakes and Sunday dinners at home. Think Watercress Soup with Trout Quenelles, Artichokes Bravas, and seasonal variations on Pot-au-Feu--alongside Smoked Meat Croquettes, a Tater Tot Galette, and Squash Sticky Buns. Also included are instructions for making your own soap and cough drops, not to mention an epic 16-page fold-out gatefold with recipes and guidance for stocking a cellar with apocalyptic essentials (Canned Bread, Pickled Pork Butt, and Smoked Apple Cider Vinegar) for throwing the most sought-after in-bunker dinner party Filled with recipes, reflections, and ramblings, in this book you'll find chapters devoted to the Qu b cois tradition of celebrating Christmas in July, the magic of public television, and Fred and Dave's unique take on barbecue (Burnt-End Bourguignon, Cassoulet Rapide), as well as ruminations on natural wine and gluten-free cooking, and advice on how children should behave at dinner. Whether you're holing up for a zombie holocaust or just cooking at home, Joe Beef is a book about doing it yourself, about making it on your own, and about living--or at least surviving--in style.
A concise, brilliant and incisive examination of Democratic nominee Joe Biden and his lifelong quest for the presidency by National Book Award winner Evan Osnos 'It is impossible to come away from Osnos's biography without a sense of awe at what Biden has overcome' Guardian 'Beautifully written' Financial Times 'A good primer on the man who could soon be president . . . Eloquent and well-informed' Sunday Times 'Ably takes the measure of the man and the politician' Washington Post Former vice president Joseph R. Biden Jr. has been called both the luckiest man and the unluckiest fortunate to have sustained a fifty-year political career that reached the White House, but also marked by deep personal losses that he has suffered. Yet even as Biden s life has been shaped by drama, it has also been powered by a willingness, rare at the top ranks of politics, to confront his shortcomings, errors and reversals of fortune. His trials have forged in him a deep empathy for others in hardship an essential quality as he addresses a nation at its most dire hour in decades. Blending up-close journalism and broader context, Evan Osnos illuminates Biden s life and captures the characters and meaning of an extraordinary presidential election. He draws on lengthy interviews with Biden and on revealing conversations with more than a hundred others, including President Barack Obama, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg, and a range of progressive activists, advisers, opponents, and Biden family members. In this nuanced portrait, Biden emerges as flawed, yet resolute, and tempered by the flame of tragedy a man who just may be uncannily suited for his moment in history.

A biography of Joe Biden, the 46th President of the United States: from childhood through the Senate to his election as vice president and, in 2020, as president. The road to the presidency of the United States was a long--and determined--one for Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. From Joe's childhood in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware, his close-knit, devoted family gave him the foundation that would guide him through life. His family's unwavering support bolstered Joe when he was bullied for stuttering, attended law school, and became a public defender. They encouraged Joe when he pursued a career in politics and became the sixth youngest senator in US history. They consoled him when he suffered the devastating loss of his first wife and baby daughter and years later the death of his eldest son, Beau. And they cheered Joe when he served two vice presidential terms with President Barrack Obama. After a lifetime marked by perseverance, integrity, and accomplishment, Joe Biden and running mate, Kamala Harris, won the 2020 presidential election. And standing by his side each and every step of the way was his wife Jill, his children, and his grandchildren--his family.

The author's own experiences have been documented as vividly as possible, to make the narrative of the book more interesting and informative. Readers tend to participate in those experiences and relate to the ambiance and environment that the writer found himself at every point in his travels. In all travels, strange and unfamiliar things could happen, and the inclusion of them were likely to teach some lesson that could be of use, when a traveler personally came across them and to be able to avoid such lesson, if need be. The author has to compare his own demographic status with almost all the people he met through the places he would traverse, and in situations that were sometimes very unfamiliar; for example, the food, particularly the meat, shouldn't be peculiar, as he was used to Beef, Mutton, Fish, Poultry, but not Pork or anything related to it, such as Ham, Bacon, etc. There were times, when he refused to eat the food, because all he was eating was "scrumptious ingredients", he was told. Finances too became problematic, as changing from one currency to another was not easy. The rates would change from one place to another. In Liberia, for example, the author had an argument of why merchants there wouldn't accept the Franc that was used in the Ivory Coast, a neighboring country of Liberia. Hotels would accept one type of currency, but not another, making one to switch from one place to another. Those could be some of the experiences along the way, and one could only learn from them. Socializing also became difficult, because relationships demanded money, like buying someone a drink, and then asking the person to keep one company overnight. There were "services" offered in those places; however, they were not free, and it became arduous to shell out the little money that one had; and if one wasn't careful, all one had could be stolen. Yet, the book, Joe, The Black Ulysses, has been written to far more fascinating, and it made a delightful reading than a few paragraphs about it.
There's a poltergeist in Joe Quinn's house, and Davie is determined to discover its source in this lively, hopeful graphic storybook from David Almond and Dave McKean. Joe Quinn has been telling everyone about the poltergeist in his house, but no one believes him. No one, that is, except Davie. Davie's felt the inexplicable presence in the Quinns' house and seen random objects fly through the air. And there's something else . . . a memory of Davie's beloved sister and a feeling deep down that it might just be possible for ghosts to exist. Full of thoughts of hauntings and grief and God, Davie hovers on a precipice of uncertainty and possibility, a space that storyteller David Almond occupies comfortably and returns to again and again -- here paired once more with the dynamic, dreamlike mixed-media art of Dave McKean.

How To Achieve Your Goals Through Success Based HabitsI Believe You Can Achieve Your Dreams In Less Time By Using The 12 DisciplinesIf you want to be productive, happier and create a more fulfilling life, I can show you howSimplicity Is KeyThis book gets straight down to business. It's simple and straight to the point. My aim was to fill this book with value, no unnecessary words. Why say it in ten words when you can say it in one - Is the philosophy of the book. It's short and direct, but what it lacks in length it makes up with in valuable content. Make sure your journal is to hand as I'm sure you'll find a great idea.Time Is Your Most Precious Asset, Don't Waste It"I don't have the time " is a complaint I here over and over again, plus it's one I've used in the past. You have a great idea, but don't have the time to develop it. What if, by introducing two rituals into your daily routine you could gain anything from 2 to 5 hours every day, would you have time then? This book will show you what those habits are and how to bring them into your life.Growth + Action = SuccessTo achieve your goals and dream personal growth is needed. In order to grow we have to act outside our comfort zone. Comfort zones are a safe place, they're only scary when we leave them. One half of the achievement is knowing you need to act outside your comfort zone, the other half is doing it. Not only will this book show you how to make it less scary, it also recommends further reading to help you overcome the fear. All We Have To Give Is Our Personal ServiceZig Ziglar famously said "You can have everything in life you want if you help enough other people get what they want". It's a simple philosophy however, it's often over looked. It's easy to forget about people when we're focused on building success. Having said that, if you take a look at the companies that change the world you'll notice they have one thing in common. They enhance more lives. Find a way to serve as many people as possible and you will have everything you desire. Success Rituals will show you how we can all help at least one other person.
