Today's high-pressure childhoods cry out for every cognitive and emotional advantage that fitness can provide, but children are staring at screens, sitting on couches, and staying inside. William E. Simon Jr. examines the greatest threat to our children's health in America today: the deadly duo of obesity and inactivity. As a result of these perils, children today may have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. With the help of world-renowned medical experts, the author investigates the causes and effects of this health crisis and looks at recent research revealing the extraordinary benefits that physical activity confers on a child's mind, body, and spirit. If we are to give children the healthy start in life they deserve, the author contends, schools--as the place where almost all children spend most of their waking hours--must play a greater role in teaching physical literacy and providing fitness resources. Learn why physical education is so important to children's well-being and how you can fight the growing epidemic of inactivity in Break a Sweat, Change Your Life.Advance Praise forBreak a Sweat, Change Your Life T]he current levels of obesity and inactivity in our children have become the most fearful enemies to their health. ... Here is the first book which highlights the unique resource of religion in the field of prevention. Until now, religious systems have been a largely undertapped resource of talent, energy, care, and physical and financial assets. Religion and Prevention in Mental Health is a significant new volume that lays a general foundation for preventive work in the religious area. It presents a number of reasons for examining religion as a source for aiding prevention and well-being. The authors dispute the popular notion of religion as damaging to mental health, as well as the idea that religious affiliation is entirely predictive of better mental health. Instead they focus on the framework for living that religions provide which assists believers in anticipating, avoiding, or modifying problems before they develop. For the human service professional willing to build a collaborative relationship with religious systems, this vital book depicts the richness and diversity of religion and shows the interface of religion, well-being, and prevention. Important issues such as the impact of religion on American society and the ethos of mental health and prevention, the historical and contemporary role of the African-American church as an empowering agent and mediating structure for black citizens, the critical roles of theology in determining the attitude of religious systems toward prevention and well-being, the importance of community and personal narratives, and the limitations of religious settings due to their survival concerns and methods to increase their potential to heal are all discussed thoroughly. Through a better understanding of religious settings, programs, and processes, human service professionals can more effectively utilize religion and reach a neglected portion of the population in need of help. In addition, religious leaders, mental health professionals including counselors, social workers, program developers, evaluators, and administrators, and psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists will benefit from the comprehensive material provided in this timely book.

Too often, the same few faithful people end up volunteering their services in the church, while the majority seems content to watch the action - or lack thereof - from the sidelines. But there is hope for leaders who find themselves in this situation. 'Volunteers for Today's Church' shows ministry leaders how to motivate the stand-by crowd to start playing the game. And although just getting players to sign up is a major task, seasoned coaches know that this is just the beginning. Determining the strengths of each volunteer is crucial for a strong team. We came up with an idea: Good versus Evil. Kenny writes the bad side, and Joel writes the good side. The poetry of this book captures and reflects simultaneously both our bad actions, which we followed and which landed us in a bad spot: prison; and our reborn actions, which we now follow after committing our lives to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This has now brought us to a good spot: good works and the ability to do them, placed in us by Jesus. In the end, we came up with Peace Comes in the Morning, but this is not just a title. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 (ESV), "Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." In other words, PEACE stands for "patiently eliminating a care every day." This is what Jesus is saying. Give him your cares. We pray this poetry helps those who read it, and please share with your friends and family. We thank you for reading and for praying for us.

Flying into the Future explores the organization of air transport in the European Union. It analyses the nature of the industries supplying air transport services, the institutional structure of air transport services, and impediments to increased efficiency in the provision of air transport. The reduction in institutional barriers and regulations has led to a more efficient provision of air transport services in the EU. This book assesses the improvements in the efficiency of air transport services, and highlights institutional and physical problems impeding further efficiency gains. The authors examine airline operations, and the ability of two or more transport systems to operate effectively in tandem. They also consider how to make the boundaries between different transport networks invisible, as well as discussing issues of national organization and the juridical structures which impede operations. The analysis examines both the internal European Union market for air transport services and the links between it and the rest of the world. Other key issues discussed include:EU air transport developments in the context of global marketscomparisons of recent developments in aviation policy between the EU and the United Statesthe problems of congestion in the air transport industry in Europethe growth and significance of airline alliances. The authors not only consider the economics of European air transport but also legal, political, technical and geographical issues. They explore the problems of providing air transport in the context of inadequate information, institutional constraints, inherent market imperfections and imprecise objectives.Flying into the Future will be essential reading for industrialists, policymakers and academics interested in transport economics and transport policy.

Permutation Statistical Methods

Permutation Statistical Methods

Janis E Johnston; Kenneth J. Berry; Michael A. Long

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2026
nidottu
The primary purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to elementary statistical methods as related to tests of differences, such as one-sample tests, tests of two independent samples, tests of two matched samples, and one-way analysis of variance. Throughout the book the emphasis is on permutation statistical methods, although the results of the permutation analyses are always compared and contrasted with the results of conventional statistical analyses. Unlike classical statistical methods, permutation statistical methods do not rely on theoretical distributions, avoid the usual assumptions of normality and homogeneity, depend only on the observed data, and do not require random sampling. The book is designed for an audience with limited statistical background and can easily serve as a supplementary textbook in an undergraduate or graduate course in departments such as statistics, psychology, economics, or biology. In particular, the audience for this book is quantitative undergraduate and graduate students in fields such as psychology, sociology, biology and political science. No statistical training beyond a first course in statistics is required.
The Fetal and Neonatal Pulmonary Circulation

The Fetal and Neonatal Pulmonary Circulation

E. Kenneth Weir; Stephen L. Archer; John T. Reeves

Blackwell Futura
2000
sidottu
Birth is a sudden, traumatic transition of environments. Once the placental oxygen supply ceases, the foetus has only minutes to establish pulmonary oxygen transport, which requires not only inflation of the lungs, but also sudden and sustained changes in the lung circulation. Not long ago, research in this field was largely restricted to morphology and physiology. Now the powerful new tools of cellular and molecular biology have begun to shed light on the physiological processes in the developing lung and its supporting vasculature. In 22 chapters, three main sections explore lung growth and development, vascular cell growth and differentiation, and the mechanisms of hemodynamic control in the neonate; extensive illustrations give a comprehensive picture of pulmonary circulatory development. Factors controlling vasculogenesis and angiogenesis are described by the scientists who pioneered the field. Similarly, the intracellular signaling cascades that determine proliferation or growth inhibition of fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells are also presented in an understandable manner. Finally, the role of substances, such as nitric oxide and endothelin, that control the hemodynamics of the fetal and neonatal circulations are discussed in detail, particularly in relation to the changes occurring at birth. This book will inform basic scientists as well as the clinician and student, and should be of particular interest to pediatric cardiologists, pulmonary medicine physicians, and vascular biologists.
