Laura Nyro (1947-1997) was one of the most significant figures to emerge from the singer-songwriter boom of the 1960s. She first came to attention when her songs were hits for Barbra Streisand, The Fifth Dimension, Peter, Paul and Mary, and others. But it was on her own recordings that she imprinted her vibrant personality. With albums like Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and New York Tendaberry she mixed the sounds of soul, pop, jazz and Broadway to fashion autobiographical songs that earned her a fanatical following and influenced a generation of music-makers. In later life her preoccupations shifted from the self to embrace public causes such as feminism, animal rights and ecology – the music grew mellower, but her genius was undimmed. This book examines her entire studio career from 1967’s More than a New Discovery to the posthumous Angel in the Dark release of 2001. Also surveyed are the many live albums that preserve her charismatic stage presence. With analysis of her teasing, poetic lyrics and unique vocal and harmonic style, this is the first-ever study to concentrate on Laura Nyro’s music and how she created it. Elton John idolised her; Joni Mitchell declared her ‘a true original’. Here’s why.

Laura Mulvey's importance and influence as a feminist filmmaker and theorist are explored in depth with critical essays by scholars, new conversations with filmmakers and thinkers, and previously unpublished writings by Mulvey herself. With the publication of her influential 1975 essay, 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema', film theorist Laura Mulvey became a key figure in the women's liberation movement of the 1970s, imagining and affirming feminist ways of seeing. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Laura Mulvey: Feminist Legacies looks beyond Mulvey's contributions to the feminist seventies, and the assumption of its political limitations. Instead, by connecting her roles as film director, theorist, writer, and activist, established and emerging scholars re-emphasize the radical intent of Mulvey's theoretical and practical interventions. In doing so, they assert that her oeuvre articulates a sensibility and mode of inquiry that has been formative for feminist interventions into visual culture around the globe. Including previously unpublished examples of her writing, along with new conversations with Martine Beugnet, Sheila Rowbotham, Yvonne Rainer, and Adeena Mey, this collection illuminates the histories that have shaped Mulvey's contributions to feminist film, art, thought, and politics. By tracing how Mulvey's work is a vital part of the feminist concerns of the present, the book makes it clear that not only are Mulvey's investigations into feminist visual culture ongoing, they also anticipate and impact scholarly directions in sensation, affect, materiality, race, and technology that are playing out within contemporary feminist debates.

Laura Esquivel's Mexican Fictions
Outstanding essayists in Latin American literature and film explore Laura Esquivel's critical reputation, contextualise her work in literary movements, and consider her four novels and the film based on Like Water for Chocolate from diverse critical perspectives. The Editor's "An Introduction to Esquivel Criticism" reviews twenty-years of global praise and condemnation. Elena Poniatowska, in an essay provided in the original Spanish and in translation, reflects on her first reading of Like Water for Chocolate. From unique critical perspectives, Jeffrey Oxford, Patrick Duffey, and Debra Andrist probe the novel as film and fiction. The Reverend Dr Stephen Butler Murray explores the author's spiritual focus, and cultural geographer Maria Elena Christie uses words and images to compare Mexican kitchen-space and Esquivel's first novel. Elizabeth Coonrod Martinez and Lydia H Rodriguez affirm divergent readings of The Law of Love, and Elizabeth M Willingham reads contested national identity in Swift as Desire. Jeanne L Gillespie and Ryan F Long approach Malinche: A Novel through historical documents and popular and religious culture. In the closing essay of the volume, Alberto Julian Perez contextualises Esquivel's fiction within Feminist and Hispanic literary movements. A glossary and translations recommend the work to English-speaking readers and those new to studies of Hispanic fiction and film. This book is the first in-depth review and assessment of twenty years of Esquivel criticism. The comparative and theoretical views presented of each of Esquivel's four novels and the film of Like Water for Chocolate provide suggestions for future literary research.

Dame Laura Knight RA (1877-1970) was the first female member to be elected to the Royal Academy of Arts, submitting Dawn, her now famous painting of two female nudes, as her Diploma Work in 1936. In 1965 the Academy's major retrospective of her work recognised her importance in British art. This autumn an exhibition of Knight's drawings opens at the RA. Drawing was a key part of her practice, and allowed her to capture at speed her various subjects, which include travellers, circus performers, boxers, ballet dancers and ice skaters. Drawing allowed her to capture with immediacy the exuberant life of her models, as well as being a vital recording tool when she witnessed one of the most important events of the twentieth century: the Nuremberg trials. In this new publication on the artist, Annette Wickham and Helen Valentine present the Academy's holdings of her drawings with an in-depth analysis focused on three key subjects within her work: the nude, the working woman and country life.
