"The Mating of Lydia" by Mrs. Humphry Ward is a novel that explores the complexities of personal relationships and self-identity in the context of shifting societal norms. The story begins at the deteriorating Threlfall Tower, where two servants await the arrival of their new master and his Italian wife. Their conversation reveals concerns about the state of the house and the unfamiliarity of their new situation. When the family arrives, the stark contrast between their expectations and the harsh, damp Cumbrian life sets the stage for tension. The wife, coming from a vastly different background, faces difficulties in adapting to the isolated and bleak surroundings. The novel delves into the intricacies of love, duty, and personal transformation, exploring how individuals navigate the demands of societal expectations while reconciling their personal desires. As the family settles into their new life, the story highlights the emotional struggles and social divides that arise when individuals from different worlds collide, creating a compelling narrative of change, adaptation, and self-discovery.
Mõlemad said sellest kirjavahetusest inspiratsiooni oma loometööks, samuti on see andnud ainest hilisematele ilukirjandusteostele.Käesoleva väljaande aluseks on kirjandusmuuseumis koostatud Kreutzwaldi kirjavahetuse viies köide (1962). Vajadust mööda on kirjatekste redigeeritud, täiendatud on kommentaare ja illustratsioonide valikut. Raamatu lõpust leiab lugeja kirjandusteadlase Sirje Oleski järelsõna "19. sajandi parim eesti romaan", nimeregistri, sõnaseletuste ja illustratsioonide loendi.

Amy Ignatow’s signature sense of humor is on full display in this satisfying sequel. After spending all of fifth grade studying popularity together, Julie and Lydia are finally ready to put their hard-earned lessons to use in junior high. But before they can, disaster strikes: Lydia’s mom gets a job in London for six whole months! Before Lydia can say “Fancy a cup of tea?” she’s thrust into a new school, where she earns a reputation as “the Violent American.” Meanwhile Julie’s stuck navigating the cliques of American junior high on her own and is adopted by a group of troublemaking eighth graders known as the Bichons. The two best friends will have to learn to keep in touch and stand on their own, assisted as always by their trusty notebook.
