Pride in Modesty

Pride in Modesty

Michelangelo Sabatino

University of Toronto Press
2011

Following Italy's unification in 1861, architects, artists, politicians, and literati engaged in volatile debates over the pursuit of national and regional identity. Growing industrialization and urbanization across the country contrasted with the rediscovery of traditionally built forms and objects created by the agrarian peasantry. Pride in Modesty argues that these ordinary, often anonymous, everyday things inspired and transformed Italian art and architecture from the 1920s through the 1970s. Through in-depth examinations of texts, drawings, and buildings, Michelangelo Sabatino finds that the folk traditions of the pre-industrial countryside have provided formal, practical, and poetic inspiration directly affecting both design and construction practices over a period of sixty years and a number of different political regimes. This surprising continuity allows Sabatino to reject the division of Italian history into sharply delimited periods such as Fascist Interwar and Democratic Postwar and to instead emphasize the long, continuous process that transformed pastoral and urban ideals into a new, modernist Italy.

A Return to Modesty

When A Return to Modestywas first published in 1999, it began an important and much-needed national conversation. Wendy Shalit persuasively argued that modesty is not some hang-up we should set out to cure, but rather a wonderful instinct that, if rediscovered and given the right social support, has the power to transform society. Now, in this newly revised edition, Shalit backs up her claim with the latest trends and research to prove that the issue is just as pressing today as ever. Unfortunately, many problems Shalit originally explored, such as date rape, harassment, and most alarmingly, the sexualisation of young girls, have only become more prevalent. Where once a young woman was ashamed of her sexual experience, today she is ashamed of her sexual inexperience. And as we continue to push the limits of what is accepted behaviour, the pressure to overcome embarrassment and discard all sense of modesty is greater than ever. A Return to Modestyis a deeply personal account as well as a fascinating intellectual exploration into everything from seventeenth-century manners to the 1948 tune "Baby, It's Cold Outside." Beholden neither to social conservatives nor to feminists, Shalit reminds us that modesty is not prudery, but a natural instinct-and one that may be able to save us from ourselves.

A clear-eyed and urgent vision for a new system of political governance to manage planetary issues and their local consequences. Deadly viruses, climate-changing carbon molecules, and harmful pollutants cross the globe unimpeded by national borders. While the consequences of these flows range across scales, from the planetary to the local, the authority and resources to manage them are concentrated mainly at one level: the nation-state. This profound mismatch between the scale of planetary challenges and the institutions tasked with governing them is leading to cascading systemic failures. In the groundbreaking Children of a Modest Star, Jonathan S. Blake and Nils Gilman not only challenge dominant ways of thinking about humanity's relationship to the planet and the political forms that presently govern it, but also present a new, innovative framework that corresponds to our inherently planetary condition. Drawing on intellectual history, political philosophy, and the holistic findings of Earth system science, Blake and Gilman argue that it is essential to reimagine our governing institutions in light of the fact that we can only thrive if the multi-species ecosystems we inhabit are also flourishing. Aware of the interlocking challenges we face, it is no longer adequate merely to critique our existing systems or the modernist assumptions that helped create them. Blake and Gilman propose a bold, original architecture for global governance—what they call planetary subsidiarity—designed to enable the enduring habitability of the Earth for humans and non-humans alike. Children of a Modest Star offers a clear-eyed and urgent vision for constructing a system capable of stabilizing a planet in crisis.

Uncommon Lyricisms: Modest Musorgsky's Early Songs

Modest Musorgsky is most often considered a composer of remarkable opera, symphonic and piano works. He is not as well known, however, particularly outside his native Russia, for his art songs, possibly excepting his song, "The Song of the Flea," and his song cycles, Songs and Dances of Death and The Nursery. This book aims to present to the reader six of Musorgsky's early songs (1857-1867) that reveal his striking mastery of the smaller form of the art song. Furthermore, the brilliant ways in which Musorgsky structures and seems to conjure each song's lyrical "veins," which are often poetically astounding, are argued to possess literary and musical images and expressions that, at the very least, approach the achievements of the great song composers, such as Schubert, Schumann, Debussy, Verdi, Wagner and Musorgsky's compatriots, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Uncommon Lyricisms strives to show Musorgsky's ability to orchestrate his spontaneous lyrical "strata" in songs with the forms or character of the genres of the romance, folk song, opera and vaudeville, and to introduce the songs' poetic texts, three of which Musorgsky wrote himself, with translations and transliterations in English to aid English speakers, or speakers of languages with the Latin alphabet, with the language "barrier." It is the author's belief that, once the reader becomes more acquainted with Musorgsky's songs, he or she will be struck, in these compositions' - supposedly - smaller scale, by the powerful expression, atmospheric beauty and comic humor that Musorgsky summons forth within them.
