This collection of thoughtful reflections looks at events and activities of everyday life and discovers routes to spiritual practice and deeper, daily spirituality. At the behest of CREDO Institute, Inc., which hosts health and wellness conferences and is supported by the Episcopal Church Pension Fund, priest and CREDO conference leader Renée Miller wrote the 20 reflections and grouped them into the categories: Meditative Practice, Ministry Practice, Media Practice, Mind Practice, and Movement Practice. Each entry, accented with color photographs, is aimed at evoking mindfulness in the common activities of life, from music and movie going to reading, writing, and walking. For the reader who wishes to use the book to introduce or more deeply explore spiritual practices with other people or in an instructional setting, each chapter concludes with a nod toward who might be inclined to certain practices, based on individual predilections or personality. The Foreword by Brian Taylor lays out the theological underpinnings of spiritual discipline in what could stand alone as a primer on spiritual practice.
This textual "House of Mirrors" explores and performs autobiography in/as re-search through the presentation of poetry, personal stories, and theoropoetic ruminations. The themes of writing, mothering, and teaching are reflected by examining the self/selves in the context of textual and living others. This book also incorporates the contributions of women's autobiographical writings and provides some curricular applications for autobiography in education. Drawing upon feminist and literary thought, "House of Mirrors" reflexively enacts the possibilities, ethical complications, and disruptions of writing autobiographically about self, others, and autobiography.

Today young adults are contracting HIV more rapidly than virtually any period during the past two decades. Young women, particularly those who are black and Latina, are bearing the brunt of this 'new wave' of infection. Putting Risk in Perspective explores the many factors associated with HIV infection among young black women. HIV infection often occurs as a result of high risk behavior. Understanding what causes a young woman to take sexual and reproductive risks requires a consideration of the kinds of life issues she faces. Drawing on ethnographic study and interviews, RenZe T. White introduces to the reader many young women who are dealing with economic pressures, family relationships, dating and courtship, intimate relationship issues, and questions of sexual identity. These along with the mythology surrounding HIV and AIDS_and knowledge about contraception_influence whether or not a black teenager will engage in risky activity. This powerful book shows why the fight against AIDS must incorporate a commitment to improving the social and economic opportunities available to young black women.
Hawai'ian performance cartography is an interactive presentation of place as “experienced space” that situates mapping in the environment, and encodes spatial knowledge into bodily memory via repetitive recitations and other habitual practices, such as hula .Kanaka Hawai?i Cartography is both similar to and distinct from Western cartography. It is similar in that it provides a shorthand system of understanding spatial phenomenon. It is distinctive in that Kanaka Hawai?i cartography places emphasis on multisensual cognitive abilities and multidimensional symbolic interrelationships, and privileges performance as a primary mode of communication.The book is separated into two main parts, with the first part presenting the basics of a Hawai?i cartographic philosophy and the second part detailing three Kanaka Hawai?i cartographic practices. The information presented in the main body of the text minimizes the use of jargon and complex terms, making it accessible for the educated lay-reader. The Great Depression of the 1930s had a devastating impact on sparsely populated Nevada and its two major industries, mining and agriculture. Luckily, thanks to Nevada’s powerful Senate delegation, Roosevelt’s New Deal funding flowed abundantly into the state. Among the programs thus supported was the Civilian Conservation Corps, a federal program intended to provide jobs for unemployed young men and a pool of labor for essential public lands rehabilitation projects. In all, nearly thirty-one thousand men were employed in fifty-nine ccc camps across Nevada, most of them from outside the state. These “boys,” as they were called, went to work improving the state’s forests, parks, wildlife habitats, roads, fences, irrigation systems, flood-control systems, and rangelands, while learning valuable skills on the job. Rural communities near ccc camps reaped additional benefits when local men were hired as foremen and when the camps purchased supplies from local merchants.The Civilian Conservation Corps in Nevada is the first comprehensive history of the Nevada ccc, a program designed to help the nation get back on its feet, and of the “boys” who did so much to restore Nevada’s lands and resources. The book is based on extensive research in private manuscript collections, unpublished memoirs, ccc inspectors’ reports, and other records. The book also includes period photographs depicting the Nevada ccc and its activities.

A comprehensive guide that includes a vast range of species and plant communities and employs thorough, original keys. Based primarily on vegetative characteristics, the keys don't require that flowers or other reproductive features be present, like many plant guides. And this guide's attention to woody plants as a whole allows one to identify a much greater variety of plants. That especially suits an arid region such as Utah with less diverse native trees. Woody plants are those that have stems that persist above ground even through seasons that don't favor growth, due to low precipitation or temperatures. Woody Plants of Utah employs dichotomous identification keys that are comparable to a game of twenty questions. They work through a process of elimination by choosing sequential alternatives. Detailed, illustrated plant descriptions complement the keys and provide additional botanical and environmental information in relation to a useful introductory categorization of Utah plant communities. Supplementary tools include photos, distribution maps, and an illustrated glossary.
Although spectral Indians appear with startling frequency in US literary works, until now the implications of describing them as ghosts have not been thoroughly investigated. In the first years of nationhood, Philip Freneau and Sarah Wentworth Morton peopled their works with Indian phantoms, as did Charles Brocken Brown, Washington Irving, Samuel Woodworth, Lydia Maria Child, James Fenimore Cooper, William Apess, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and others who followed. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Native American ghosts figured prominently in speeches attributed to Chief Seattle, Black Elk, and Kicking Bear. Today, Stephen King and Leslie Marmon Silko plot best-selling novels around ghostly Indians and haunted Indian burial grounds. Renée L. Bergland argues that representing Indians as ghosts internalizes them as ghostly figures within the white imagination. Spectralization allows white Americans to construct a concept of American nationhood haunted by Native Americans, in which Indians become sharers in an idealized national imagination. However, the problems of spectralization are clear, since the discourse questions the very nationalism it constructs. Indians who are transformed into ghosts cannot be buried or evaded, and the specter of their forced disappearance haunts the American imagination. Indian ghosts personify national guilt and horror, as well as national pride and pleasure. Bergland tells the story of a terrifying and triumphant American aesthetic that repeatedly transforms horror into glory, national dishonor into national pride.

The professional development school (PDS) is a unique educational reform initiative that attempts the simultaneous reform of education at the school and the university. By conducting reform at both levels of education, the PDS is a solution to the piecemeal reforms of the past, from Dewey's Progressivism to the Sputnik reforms to New Math to Whole Language, which have targeted educational change in the public schools but most have overlooked the preparation of new teachers.The PDS addresses the professional development of experienced teachers in the field, the preparation of new teachers, and improvement of the programs of K-12 schools at the same time and at the same place—the school site. In this way, reform goals are agreed upon and implemented by both new and experienced teachers so that reform efforts are seamlessly supported by all parties involved. Nevertheless, most educators engaged in PDS reform agree that PDSs are a high stakes reform effort and are fraught with difficulties. This case study provides an annotated road map of one PDS partnership so that others interested in partnership work are provided general principles to guide their work.
