Hiring, Firing and Discipline for Employers

Hiring, Firing and Discipline for Employers

Before a coach at a top-notch college football program recruits a quarterback, he clearly knows what physical and mental abilities the recruit should possess. He also must evaluate whether the recruit will fit the culture of the football program and that of the school. Before a hiring decision is made, a position description should be written, which clearly defines, in writing, exactly the type of individual who will meet the criteria of the job and the culture of the department and the company.Today's marketplace holds few constants. But there is one certainty - every company, no matter the size, possesses only one true advantage over its competition and that is its people. On any given day, the operations, manufacturing processes, products, and distribution methods, even well laid marketing campaigns can be copied with relative ease. But no amount of imitation can duplicate the workforce. How this unique resource is managed will determine the success or failure of an organization. Therefore, in order for a company to achieve a competitive advantage it must hire the right people. Once hired, an employer needs to create an environment in which those new hires will be successful. This is not easy. It requires effective management practices, which must also be in compliance with the laws of the United States and applicable state law. This book will help ensure that employment practices are legal. J. Dylan King, Jessica Asbridge, and Frank Day are all management attorneys with FordHarrison, LLP. They represent employers on employment related matters, including wage and hour disputes, discrimination claims, investigations by government agencies, including the Department of Labor (DOL) and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and their state-agency equivalents, and provide counseling on all types of employment practices and policies. Dylan, Jessica, and Frank undertook the task of compiling and editing the federal and state employment laws in this that affect hiring, firing and discipline.

Are you among the tens of thousands of people who have lost a dramatic amount of weight? If so, congratulations! You did it! Those years of struggling and failed diets are behind you. Perhaps you did it through weight loss surgery. Or, perhaps it was through diet and exercise. Either way, you have created a new body and a new life for yourself. But, now that the weight is gone, are you left with extra skin? If so, it likely causes you embarrassment and perhaps hygiene problems as well. Fortunately, body contouring surgery can help restore a more natural look to your body. The authors of this book, respected plastic surgeons, have performed hundreds of body contouring procedures on weight loss patients, and they understand your concerns as you explore having reconstructive surgery. Among the questions they answer are: • How soon after surgery can I have excess skin be removed? • Which surgery should I have first? • How many surgeries can I have at one time? • Should I have a tummy tuck or a body lift? • Will I have much pain after contouring surgery? • Can my breasts be restored to normal? • Where will scars from the surgery be visible? • When can I return to work and resume physical activity? • What about fees? Will insurance pay? The book contains 136 color illustrations and photos, including dozens of "before & after" photos of surgery patients, as well as an appendix, resource section, glossary, and index.

Nubia has always been a little bit different. As a baby she showcased Amazonian-like strength by pushing over a tree to rescue her neighbour s cat. But despite her having similar abilities, the world has no problem telling her that she s no Wonder Woman. And even if she were, they wouldn t want her. Every time she comes to the rescue, she s reminded of how people see her: as a threat. Her moms do their best to keep her safe, but Nubia can t deny the fire within her, even if she s a little awkward about it sometimes. Even if it means people assume the worst. When Nubia s best friend, Quisha, is threatened by a boy who thinks he owns the town, Nubia will risk it all her safety, her home, and her crush on that cute kid in English class to become the hero society tells her she isn t. From the witty and powerful voice behind A Blade So Black, and with endearing and expressive art by Robyn Smith, comes a vital story for today about equality, identity, and kicking it with your squad.

The astonishing women involved in the Actresses Franchise League set up their own theatre companies and engaged with the battle for the vote by writing and performing campaigning plays all over the country. They launched themselves onto the political stage with their satirical plays, sketches and monologues whilst at the same time challenging the staid conventions of the Edwardian Theatre of the day. The legacy of their inspiring work to change both theatre and society has survived in the political theatre, agitprop and verbatim theatre we know today. Introduced and set in an historical context by Dr Susan Croft together with a chronology of suffrage drama.

Principal Functions

Principal Functions

During the decade and a half that has elapsed since the intro duction of principal functions (Sario [8 J), they have become impor tant tools in an increasing number of branches of modern mathe matics. The purpose of the present research monograph is to systematically develop the theory of these functions and their ap plications on Riemann surfaces and Riemannian spaces. Apart from brief background information (see below), nothing contained in this monograph has previously appeared in any other book. The basic idea of principal functions is simple: Given a Riemann surface or a Riemannian space R, a neighborhood A of its ideal boundary, and a harmonic function s on A, the principal function problem consists in constructing a harmonic function p on all of R which imitates the behavior of s in A. Here A need not be connected, but may include neighborhoods of isolated points deleted from R. Thus we are dealing with the general problem of constructing harmonic functions with given singularities and a prescribed behavior near the ideal boundary. The function p is called the principal function corresponding to the given A, s, and the mode of imitation of s by p. The significance of principal functions is in their versatility.
Contrasts and Effect Sizes in Behavioral Research

Contrasts and Effect Sizes in Behavioral Research

Robert Rosenthal; Ralph L. Rosnow; Donald B. Rubin

Cambridge University Press

Contrasts are statistical procedures for asking focused questions of data. Compared to diffuse or omnibus questions, focused questions are characterized by greater conceptual clarity and greater statistical power when examining those focused questions. If an effect truly exists, we are more likely to discover it and to believe it to be real when asking focused questions rather than omnibus ones. Researchers, teachers of research methods and graduate students will be familiar with the principles and procedures of contrast analysis, but will also be introduced to a series of newly developed concepts, measures, and indices that permit a wider and more useful application of contrast analysis. This volume takes on this new approach by introducing a family of correlational effect size estimates.

Judicial Policy Making and the Modern State

Judicial Policy Making and the Modern State

Malcolm M. Feeley; Edward L. Rubin

Cambridge University Press

Between 1965 and 1990, federal judges in almost all of the states handed down sweeping rulings that affected virtually every prison and jail in the United States. Without a doubt judges were the most important prison reformers during this period. This book provides an account of this process, and uses it to explore the more general issue of the role of courts in the modern bureaucratic state. In doing so, it provides detailed accounts of how the courts formulated and sought to implement their orders, and how this action affected the traditional conception of federalism, separation of powers, and the rule of law.

More than ever before, there is widespread interest in studying bumble bees and the critical role they play in our ecosystems. Bumble Bees of North America is the first comprehensive guide to North American bumble bees to be published in more than a century. Richly illustrated with color photographs, diagrams, range maps, and graphs of seasonal activity patterns, this guide allows amateur and professional naturalists to identify all 46 bumble bee species found north of Mexico and to understand their ecology and changing geographic distributions. The book draws on the latest molecular research, shows the enormous color variation within species, and guides readers through the many confusing convergences between species. It draws on a large repository of data from museum collections and presents state-of-the-art results on evolutionary relationships, distributions, and ecological roles. Illustrated keys allow identification of color morphs and social castes. A landmark publication, Bumble Bees of North America sets the standard for guides and the study of these important insects. * The best guide yet to the 46 recognized bumble bee species in North America north of Mexico* Up-to-date taxonomy includes previously unpublished results * Detailed distribution maps * Extensive keys identify the many color patterns of species

This volume examines the role of social factors in the nature and development of written communication. Unlike previous works, the volume is dedicated to examining the ways in which written communication affects and is affected by the community of writers and readers who produce and interpret written language. It focuses on the extent to which writing depends upon principles of social context that are posited for language in general. Intended for both researchers and teachers in language, composition, education, and communication, the volume draws together a number of distinguished scholars in linguistics, communication, education, anthropology, and sociology. It offers theoretical and applied perspectives on aspects of written communication that share in the social foundations of language.
