He obtained a B.D.Sc. from the University of Western Australia in 1970 and first practised dentistry in the Pilbara of Western Australia as a government dentist under a WA government dental cadetship at the Tom Price Hospital for three years. He then worked for 43 years in private practice in Manning, a suburb of Perth, and is now retired. He married his wife Gail in Melbourne, Australia in 1970. They have three children, Julia, Brendan and Robert, and five grandchildren.
