Julkaisun asiantuntija-artikkelin ja teosesittelyt on kirjoittanut FT Minna Tuominen. Julkaisu on ensimmäinen suomenkielinen Vincent van Goghia käsittelevä näyttelyjulkaisu.Tie taiteilijaksiDidrichsenin taidemuseon näyttely ja sen yhteydessä ilmestyvä julkaisu Tie taiteilijaksi esittelevät Vincent van Goghin (1853-1890) uran alkuvaiheita. Näyttelyssä nähdään 39 piirustusta ja yksi grafiikantyö vuosilta 1881-1886 sekä kaksi öljyvärimaalausta vuosilta 1887 ja 1890. Piirustukset kertovat Van Goghin matkasta taiteilijaksi, uppoutumisesta piirustusharjoituksiin ja ponnisteluista siirtää havaittu maailma paperille. Keskeisiä aiheita ovat maalaisväestön ja maatyön kuvaus, hollantilainen maisema maaseutu- ja kaupunkinäkymineen sekä henkilötutkielmat. Näyttelyssä nähtävät kaksi öljyvärityötä muistuttavat Van Goghin taiteellisen huipun ilmaisuvoimasta.Piirtäjän kutsumusVincent van Goghin tie taiteilijaksi oli poikkeuksellinen. Papin poika etsi elämälleen suuntaa epäonnistuttuaan ensin taidekauppiaana, opiskelijana ja saarnamiehenä. Taiteen tekeminen näyttäytyi uskonnolliselle miehelle mahdollisuutena palvella Jumalaa. Kotoa ja ammatista saatu kiinnostus taiteeseen muuttui kaiken muun sivuttavaksi palavaksi kutsumukseksi, ja kesällä 1880 kypsynyt päätös aloitti kymmenvuotiseksi jääneen taiteilijan uran.Van Goghilta puuttui perinteinen taidemaalarin koulutus kisällivuosineen ja akatemiaopintoineen. Hän aloitti luonteensa mukaisesti kiivaasti ja määrätietoisesti harjoittelemaan ensin piirtämistä, myöhemmin maalaamista, apunaan piirustuskurssikirjat harjoituksineen. Aloittamansa Brysselin taideakatemian kipsimallien piirustuskurssin hän keskeytti pian. Van Gogh kaipasi kuitenkin opetusta ja ohjeita kehittyäkseen. Hän vierasti taideoppilaitoksia, mutta oli palavan vakuuttunut kutsumuksestaan - aina epätavallisiin ratkaisuihin tai riitaantumisiin asti. Näin syntyneitä teoksia Van Gogh kutsui piirustuksiksi.Työskentelyä Hollannissa ja RanskassaNäyttely ja julkaisu kuvittavat Van Goghin elämää: hän joutui etsimään jatkuvasti edullisia malleja, joten kuva-aiheiksi tulivat luontevasti lähiympäristön näkymät ja arkiset askareet. Henkilötutkielmat ja muotokuvat kuvaavat maatyöläisiä ja taiteilijan lähipiiriin kuuluneita henkilöitä. Asuinpaikkaansa alati vaihtanut Van Gogh on näyttelyn teoksissa tulkinnut elinpiiriään ja näkymiä Hollannissa ja Ranskassa.
