Hitherto, the three symmetric coordination types Phrasal Coordination, Right Node Raising, and Gapping have been mostly treated in isolation. This book presents a successful attempt at developing a uniform approach - couched in a transformational framework, but also applicable to other grammatical approaches. But the account not only provides a common frame for coordination. In effect, it does away with the strict distinction between simplex and coordinate structures. The proposed approach - based on a natural extension to the classical X-scheme - is equally valid for both simplex and coordinate structures, and, thus, it presents a significant contribution to grammars of phrasal structures in general.
Das vorliegende Buch belegt und erklart Besonderheiten in der Lautgestalt des Franzosischen auf der Grundlage eines mathematisch orientierten Vergleichs mit dem Spanischen, Italienischen, Deutschen und Englischen. Daneben wird auch die globale Ahnlichkeit der betreffenden Lautsysteme miteinander rechnerisch bestimmt. Davon ausgehend werden schlielich Aussagen daruber getroffen, inwieweit die historisch eine Einheit bildenden romanischen Sprachen auch vom heutigen Standpunkt aus gesehen als eigene Sprachgruppe verstanden werden konnen.
The study introduces a concept that makes it possible to give a more precise description of literary stances in the transitional phase from modernism to post-modernism. Modernity is understood here as the expression of a paradoxical state. Rationally, unitary notions central to the modern age (metaphysical, subject-related, linguistic) no longer appear tenable; in terms of the sheer practical necessities of life they are however indispensable. Thus modern authors have gone in search of visions of totality susceptible of being pressed into service as coping strategies, both aesthetically and in terms of Weltanschauung. These quandaries are delineated here with detailed reference to the work of Alfred Doblin (up to 1933), concentrating not only on his most successful novel "Berlin Alexanderplatz" but giving equal attention to his almost totally neglected early works."

The study is devoted to the first German translation (1500) of Apuleius' -Metamorphoses- by Johann Sieder. On the basis of three transmission sources, it examines developments in translation and the history of book printing, and discusses three central interpretations of the -Golden Ass-, pinpointing their relations to ancient and medieval traditions in the reception of the -Metamorphoses-. The author traces the German reception of the -Golden Ass- as far as Grimmelshausen, whose interpretation of the -Metamorphoses- casts significant light on the genesis of the modern novel."
The study investigates the role of collocations in the use of two-language dictionaries and the extent to which dictionaries satisfy the requirements of foreign language learners in this connection. The main part of the book is a detailed analysis of the way collocations are treated in important German-English reference works from different publishers. There is also consideration of the degree to which lexicographically relevant collocations can be extracted from corpora. Prior to the analysis of these dictionaries, the study describes various rival approaches to collocation research.
In the period of Weimar Classicism Goethe did not only write a number of plays which to the present day have retained their place in the canon of 'classical' literature forming part of the heritage of the 'educated' classes. From 1797 to 1817 he was director of the Court Theatre in Weimar where he figured as both a drama theoretician and a man of the theatre in an eminently practical sense. The close interactions between drama production, theory, stage practice and the 'aesthetic education' of actors and actresses gave rise to his -Rules for Actors-, a fully organized system of theatrical signs squarely in the tradition of idealist thought and designated by Goethe explicitly as a 'grammar'. The present volume sets out to retrace this semiological process (i.e. the formation of a theatrical language) 'archeologically' and point up its specific historicity. Of central moment are the question of different contemporary definitions of 'man' and 'woman' and their transformation into the semiotic system of Weimar Classicism. From the perspective of gender studies and deconstructive feminism the study essays a revision of existing historiographic approaches to Goethe's theatre and at the same time proposes a new methodological approach to research in the history of theatre."
Verb prefixes in Middle High German are an area that has yet to be studied in anything more than a patchy and incomplete manner. The present study sets out to give a comprehensive and systematic account of this phenomenon for all verbs, analyzing it from various viewpoints: graphic, morphological and above all functional-semantic. On the basis of a corpus of medieval primary sources structured for periodicity and provenance, the work differs in approach from the grammatical descriptions advanced so far, most of which refer to printed and normalized text editions. As such it provides insights of moment for future grammatographic studies on Middle High German.

The Austronesian-speaking Sama peoples make up one of the most widespread cultural groups within the Southeast Asian island world. The so-called sea-nomadic Sama Dilaut, part of the linguistic sub-group of the Sama-Bajau, form a very distinct community both socially and culturally. The performing arts are a crucial part of their life and cultural identity. Yet, previous studies of Sama Dilaut societies have hardly touched upon their music or dance forms. This edited volume attempts to close this gap in our knowledge. Contributions focus on kulintangan and other types of instrumental music, song repertoire and dance. Other topics include: Continuity and transformation in Sama Dilaut performing arts; Issues of globalisation and identity negotiation through music; Transnational flows and their impact on Sama Dilaut music and dance; The relationship between Sama Dilaut performing arts and those of surrounding communities; The impact of constructions of nationhood on Sama Dilaut music-making.

Cultural managers are increasingly engaged in international projects; they work in international art festivals, global companies of the creative industries, or international tourism. They are involved in cultural diplomacy and cultural development cooperation; and moreover, in times of an increasing worldwide migration, cultural managers are engaged in moderating intercultural change management processes in their own countries. How is internationalisation influencing cultural management? Is there a tendency towards harmonisation of management practices due to cultural globalisation? How do cultural managers from different world regions describe their working conditions also in terms of cultural policy, and which differences can be observed? What are the main challenges of international cultural cooperation, which competencies are needed for working in international and intercultural contexts, and which training concepts in international cultural management proved to be successful? These questions are investigated on the basis of a world wide survey of cultural managers.
