Siebenk s ist Jean Pauls dritter gr erer Roman. Er erschien erstmals 1796/97 in drei B nden (D1) und enthielt in vieler Hinsicht Neues: Es ist der erste gro e Eheroman der deutschen Literatur und f hrt mit dem Figurenpaar Siebenk s / Leibgeber auch die ersten "Doppeltg nger" ein. Die Geschichte des titelgebenden Helden, Firmian Stanislaus Siebenk s, besteht aus zwei Teilen, die durch den Wendepunkt seines Scheintodes miteinander verkn pft sind. Dieser erm glicht die "Auferstehung" des Armenadvokaten noch zu dessen Lebzeiten und erl st ihn damit aus der Enge seiner Ehe und aus den beschr nkten Verh ltnissen der fiktiven Kleinstadt Kuhschnappel. In der Gegenwelt von Fantaisie, einer nahe Bayreuth gelegenen Parklandschaft, findet er in der Figur der Natalie eine Seelenverwandte - ebenso wie seine in Kuhschnappel verbliebene "Witwe" Lenette im Schulrat Stiefel. Doch ist das neue Gl ck nur von kurzer Dauer: Lenette stirbt wenig sp ter im Kindbett und Siebenk s' weiteres Schicksal bleibt ambivalent. Dies gilt auch f r die 1818 erschienene, umgearbeitete und um einen Band erweiterte zweite Auflage des Romans (D2), die bisher als Grundlage nahezu aller sp teren Ausgaben diente. Die Siebenk s-Edition in der Ausgabe "Jean Paul: Werke" stellt nun die beiden von Jean Paul autorisierten Druckfassungen (inklusive aller weiteren rahmenden und flankierenden Texte, darunter ein so ber hmter wie die Rede des todten Christus vom Weltgeb ude herab, da kein Gott sey) einander vergleichend gegen ber. Leitdruck ist dabei jeweils die fr here Fassung D1. Zus tzlich werden s mtliche Abweichungen der beiden Drucke in zwei Variantenapparaten verzeichnet. So wird die Arbeit des Autors am Text unmittelbar nachvollziehbar. Die Erratalisten Jean Pauls, die Emendationen der Editorin und nicht zuletzt die bislang unbekannten Presskorrekturen von D1 werden im Kommentarband nachgewiesen. Dieser umfasst au erdem die Edition der unver ffentlichten handschriftlichen Vorarbeiten zu den beiden Auflagen des Romans sowie einen genetischen Stellenkommentar.

Hitherto, the three symmetric coordination types Phrasal Coordination, Right Node Raising, and Gapping have been mostly treated in isolation. This book presents a successful attempt at developing a uniform approach - couched in a transformational framework, but also applicable to other grammatical approaches. But the account not only provides a common frame for coordination. In effect, it does away with the strict distinction between simplex and coordinate structures. The proposed approach - based on a natural extension to the classical X-scheme - is equally valid for both simplex and coordinate structures, and, thus, it presents a significant contribution to grammars of phrasal structures in general.

The study introduces a concept that makes it possible to give a more precise description of literary stances in the transitional phase from modernism to post-modernism. Modernity is understood here as the expression of a paradoxical state. Rationally, unitary notions central to the modern age (metaphysical, subject-related, linguistic) no longer appear tenable; in terms of the sheer practical necessities of life they are however indispensable. Thus modern authors have gone in search of visions of totality susceptible of being pressed into service as coping strategies, both aesthetically and in terms of Weltanschauung. These quandaries are delineated here with detailed reference to the work of Alfred Doblin (up to 1933), concentrating not only on his most successful novel "Berlin Alexanderplatz" but giving equal attention to his almost totally neglected early works."

On the basis of three transmission sources, it examines developments in translation and the history of book printing, and discusses three central interpretations of the -Golden Ass-, pinpointing their relations to ancient and medieval traditions in the reception of the -Metamorphoses-. The author traces the German reception of the -Golden Ass- as far as Grimmelshausen, whose interpretation of the -Metamorphoses- casts significant light on the genesis of the modern novel."

The study investigates the role of collocations in the use of two-language dictionaries and the extent to which dictionaries satisfy the requirements of foreign language learners in this connection. The main part of the book is a detailed analysis of the way collocations are treated in important German-English reference works from different publishers. There is also consideration of the degree to which lexicographically relevant collocations can be extracted from corpora. In the period of Weimar Classicism Goethe did not only write a number of plays which to the present day have retained their place in the canon of 'classical' literature forming part of the heritage of the 'educated' classes. From 1797 to 1817 he was director of the Court Theatre in Weimar where he figured as both a drama theoretician and a man of the theatre in an eminently practical sense. The close interactions between drama production, theory, stage practice and the 'aesthetic education' of actors and actresses gave rise to his -Rules for Actors-, a fully organized system of theatrical signs squarely in the tradition of idealist thought and designated by Goethe explicitly as a 'grammar'. The present volume sets out to retrace this semiological process (i.e. the formation of a theatrical language) 'archeologically' and point up its specific historicity. Of central moment are the question of different contemporary definitions of 'man' and 'woman' and their transformation into the semiotic system of Weimar Classicism. From the perspective of gender studies and deconstructive feminism the study essays a revision of existing historiographic approaches to Goethe's theatre and at the same time proposes a new methodological approach to research in the history of theatre."

Verb prefixes in Middle High German are an area that has yet to be studied in anything more than a patchy and incomplete manner. The present study sets out to give a comprehensive and systematic account of this phenomenon for all verbs, analyzing it from various viewpoints: graphic, morphological and above all functional-semantic. On the basis of a corpus of medieval primary sources structured for periodicity and provenance, the work differs in approach from the grammatical descriptions advanced so far, most of which refer to printed and normalized text editions. As such it provides insights of moment for future grammatographic studies on Middle High German.
