Jim and Elizabeth Keys struggle for several years to have children, and then finally have one, but he is premature and has many health difficulties. The extra care and concern Jim feels his son needs eventually costs him his job. However, he is offered another job back in his home state. Not long after moving, his son is killed in a drive-by shooting. After the family recovers from the grief, they try again and lose the next child to miscarriage. Their physician finds out Elizabeth has a condition with her reproductive organs that he corrects which enables her to have a normal baby. This boy is small for his age and suffers a lot of ridicule until his size becomes an asset in rescuing a trapped dog. Meanwhile, Jim’s stepfather, who has been resistant to faith in Christ but more and more addicted to gambling, hits bottom and loses everything. It is then, through circumstances, he learns of another man who spent his life gambling but is now a changed man. He goes to hear the man speak and is convicted and becomes a Christian, the same night Jim’s little boy receives Christ.

This is a factual account of the author's experiences endured when the WW2 conflict with the Japanese occurred in Rabaul, New Britain in January 1942. The author was a sixteen-year-old Australian boy who took the amazing opportunity to visit his long-time pen-friend in a village near Rabaul. Tal was supposed to return home to Australia on the same ship he arrived at Rabaul on-this did not happen. Unbeknownst to Tal and his friend's family, the Japanese were preparing an invasion of Rabaul. The Australian army was unable to help Tal return to Australia and he was enlisted into the 2/22nd Battalion. His story from that point is all about survival His story graphically describes the horrific encounters witnessed and decisions made during his overwhelming need to stay alive. Tal was unable to tell his story to his family for fifty years due to feelings of guilt and emotion. The story is written in the third person so it may be seen through the eyes of the reader. His story is incredible and leaves the reader bewildered and sad that such happenings occurred
