With the intense economic development and accelerated modernization experienced by Spain since the 1970s, and especially following its entrance into the European Economic Community in 1986, the country has undergone a rapid inversion in migratory patterns. After being an exporter of economic migrants for almost a century, in the last twenty years Spain has seen itself on the receiving end of immigration. Coinciding with a time when Spain is highlighting its belonging to Europe, the growing presence of Moroccan immigrants in particular confronts Spanish society with the repressed non-European, African and Oriental aspects of its national identity.""The Return of the Moor"" examines the anxiety over symbolic and literal boundaries permeating the Spanish reception of these immigrants through an interdisciplinary analysis of social, fictional, and performative texts. It argues that Moroccans constitute a 'problem' to Spaniards not because of their cultural differences, as many claim, but because they are not different enough. Perceived as 'Moors', they conjure up past ghosts that continue to haunt the Spanish imaginary, revealing the acute tensions inherent in Spain's liminal position between Europe and Africa.

Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease

Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the deposition into the brain of amyloid peptide, which originates a cascade of inflammatory events leading eventually to neuronal death. These pathological events likely occur several years before the clinical manifestation of the disease, implying that potential therapeutical interventions are currently started too late to give beneficial results. Recently, growing attention has been paid to the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), considered the prodromal phase of AD, as 80% of subjects with MCI have been shown to develop AD within 5 years. Several studies aimed to identify biological markers to differentiate between normal aging and incipient AD have been carried out, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and neuroimaging. In particular, the evaluation of CSF Amyloid beta (1-42) levels, together with tau and phospotau, are of help for recognizing early AD. Besides, a number of additional molecules are altered in CSF. Other early modifications have been observed in peripheral cells, such as fibroblasts and leukocytes, as well as in serum from patients. Biomarkers for AD represent important tools supporting the clinical diagnosis and the choice of potential therapeutic options. Moreover, they would be of great help for the selection of cohorts of homogeneous patients for clinical trials with new disease-modifying compounds. This book is aimed to give an update about MCI as prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD), to discuss the main known pathological mechanisms at the basis of AD and to describe the possible biomarkers to be used for an early diagnosis of the disease.
Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) is a major cause of respiratory morbidity and mortality in the term and post-term new-borns. Aspirated meconium obstructs the airways and subsequently may cause an alveolar atelectasis behind the plug, air-trapping, and air leak. In a very short time after the aspiration, meconium triggers a progressive dysfunction of pulmonary surfactant, chemical pneumonia, and ventilation/perfusion mismatch, which often leads to persistent pulmonary hypertension. Due to complex pathophysiology and multiple interactions between the individual pathomechanisms, MAS is often difficult to treat. Therapeutic protocols usually include airway suctioning, ventilator support or artificial ventilation, in severe cases also administration of exogenous surfactant, inhaled NO, partial liquid ventilation, or anti-inflammatory treatment. Growing information on the role of various pathomechanisms participating in the meconium-induced respiratory, inflammatory, and cardiovascular changes widens the spectrum of drugs which may be perspectively beneficial in the treatment of MAS.

African Diasporic Cinema: Aesthetics of Reconstruction analyzes the aesthetic strategies adopted by contemporary African diasporic filmmakers to express the reconstruction of identity. Having left the continent, these filmmakers see Africa as a site of representation and cultural circulation. The diasporic experience displaces the center and forges new syncretic identities. Through migratory movement, people become foreigners, Others—and in this instance, black. The African diasporic condition in the Western world is characterized by the intersection of various factors: being African and bearing the historical memory of the continent; belonging to a black minority in majority-white societies; and finally, having historically been the object of negative, stereotyped representation. As a result, quests for the self and self-reconstruction are frequent themes in the films of the African diaspora, and yet the filmmakers refuse to remain trapped in the confines of an assigned, rigid identity. Reflecting these complex circumstances, this book analyzes the contemporary diaspora through the prism of cultural hybridization and the processes of recomposing fragmented identities, out of which new identities emerge.

Interesting, real-world mathematical modeling problems are complex and can usually be studied at different scales. The scale at which the investigation is carried out is one of the factors that determines the type of mathematics most appropriate to describe the problem. The book concentrates on two modeling paradigms: the macroscopic, in which the authors describe phenomena in terms of time evolution via ordinary differential equations, and the microscopic, which requires knowledge of random events and probability. The text emphasizes the development of computational skills to construct predictive models and analyze the results. To elucidate the concepts, a wealth of examples and portions of MATLAB? code used by the authors are included. Computational Mathematical Modeling: An Integrated Approach Across Scales:* Is designed for classroom use, has been extensively tested by the authors, and has homework problems carefully designed to develop students' computational skills.* Is based on an unorthodox combination of deterministic and probablistic methodologies that are naturally bridged through examples.* Painlessly introduces students to advanced themes in a natural progression.*Includes suggestions for further reading.

This textbook provides a solid mathematical basis for understanding popular data science algorithms for clustering and classification and shows that an in-depth understanding of the mathematics powering these algorithms gives insight into the underlying data. It presents a step-by-step derivation of these algorithms, outlining their implementation from scratch in a computationally sound way.Mathematics of Data Science: A Computational Approach to Clustering and Classificationproposes different ways of visualizing high-dimensional data to unveil hidden internal structures, andincludes graphical explanations and computed examples using publicly available data sets in nearly every chapter to highlight similarities and differences among the algorithms.

The Less Is More Linear Algebra of Vector Spaces and Matrices

Designed for a proof-based course on linear algebra, this rigorous and concise textbook intentionally introduces vector spaces, inner products, and vector and matrix norms before Gaussian elimination and eigenvalues so students can quickly discover the singular value decomposition (SVD)—arguably the most enlightening and useful of all matrix factorizations. Gaussian elimination is then introduced after the SVD and the four fundamental subspaces and is presented in the context of vector spaces rather than as a computational recipe. This allows the authors to use linear independence, spanning sets and bases, and the four fundamental subspaces to explain and exploit Gaussian elimination and the LU factorization, as well as the solution of overdetermined linear systems in the least squares sense and eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This unique textbook also includes examples and problems focused on concepts rather than the mechanics of linear algebra. The problems at the end of each chapter and in an associated website encourage readers to explore how to use the notions introduced in the chapter in a variety of ways. Additional problems, quizzes, and exams will be posted on an accompanying website and updated regularly. The Less Is More Linear Algebra of Vector Spaces and Matrices is for students and researchers interested in learning linear algebra who have the mathematical maturity to appreciate abstract concepts that generalize intuitive ideas. The early introduction of the SVD makes the book particularly useful for those interested in using linear algebra in applications such as scientific computing and data science. It is appropriate for a first proof-based course in linear algebra.

Proverbs constitute a rich archive of historical, cultural, and linguistic significance that affect genres and linguistics codes. They circulate through writers, texts, and communities in a process that ultimately results in modifications in their structure and meanings. Hence, context plays a crucial role in defining proverbs as well as in determining their interpretation. Vincenzo Brusantino's Le cento novella (1554), John Florio's Firste Fruites (1578) and Second Frutes (1591), and Pompeo Sarnelli's Posilecheata (1684) offer clear representations of how traditional wisdom and communal knowledge reflect the authors' personal perspectives on society, culture, and literature. The analysis of the three authors' proverbs through comparisons with classical, medieval, and early modern collections of maxims and sententiae provides insights on the fluidity of such expressions, and illustrates the tight relationship between proverbs and sociocultural factors. Brusantino's proverbs introduce ethical interpretations to the one hundred novellas of Boccaccio's The Decameron, which he rewrites in octaves of hendecasyllables. His text appeals to Counter-Reformation society and its demand for a comprehensible and immediately applicable morality. In Florio's two bilingual manuals, proverbs fulfill a need for language education in Elizabethan England through authentic and communicative instruction. Florio manipulates the proverbs' vocabulary and syntax to fit the context of his dialogues, best demonstrating the value of learning Italian in a foreign country. Sarnelli's proverbs exemplify the inherent creative and expressive potentialities of the Neapolitan dialect vis-?á-vis languages with a more robust literary tradition. As moral maxims, ironic assessments, or witty insertions, these proverbs characterize the Neapolitan community in which the fables take place.

How rape has been conceptualized, placed and treated by the various components within international human rights and humanitarian law present both inconsistencies, and in recent times, innovative conclusions. In terms of the former category, inconsistencies, when rape is explicitly mentioned within, for instance, the context of international humanitarian law, it tends to be associated with a woman's honor and not as a crime of violence or it is linked to the protection of women and not with the prohibition of rape. In contrast, the well-established international crime of torture has been conceptualized as a crime of violence and its prohibition is paramount. This book undertakes a political analysis approach to what can happen when rape is subsumed into the international crimes of torture and genocide.
